| 1 - Allora il popolo partì da Haserot, e poi piantò le tende nel deserto di Faran. | 1 The LORD said to Moses, |
| 2 Ivi il Signore parlò a Mosè, e gli disse: | 2 "Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I give to the people of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers shall you send a man, every one a leader among them." |
| 3 «Manda degli uomini ad esplorare la terra di Canaan che io darò a' figli d'Israele: uno de' principali, per ogni tribù». | 3 So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran, according to the command of the LORD, all of them men who were heads of the people of Israel. |
| 4 Fece Mosè quel che il Signore gli aveva comandato, e dal deserto di Faran mandò uomini de' principali, i cui nomi eran questi: | 4 And these were their names: From the tribe of Reuben, Shammu-a the son of Zaccur; |
| 5 della tribù di Ruben, Sammua figlio di Zecur; | 5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori; |
| 6 della tribù di Simeon, Safat figlio di Huri; | 6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh; |
| 7 della tribù di Giuda, Caleb figlio di Iefone; | 7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph; |
| 8 della tribù d'Issacar, Igal figlio di Giuseppe; | 8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun; |
| 9 della tribù di Efraim, Osee figlio di Nun; | 9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu; |

| 17 Son questi i nomi degli uomini che Mosè mandò ad esplorare la regione. E ad Osee figlio di Nun mise nome Giosuè. | 17 Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, "Go up into the Negeb yonder, and go up into the hill country, |
| 18 Mosè li mandò dunque ad esplorare la terra di Canaan, e disse loro: «Salite in direzione di mezzogiorno, e quando sarete arrivati ai monti, | 18 and see what the land is, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many, |
| 19 esplorate la regione com'è: il popolo che l'abita, se è forte o debole, se pochi o molti di numero; | 19 and whether the land that they dwell in is good or bad, and whether the cities that they dwell in are camps or strongholds, |
| 20 se la terra stessa è buona o cattiva; come sono le città, se murate o aperte; | 20 and whether the land is rich or poor, and whether there is wood in it or not. Be of good courage, and bring some of the fruit of the land." Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes. |
| 21 il terreno, se pingue o arido, ricco di alberi o no. Siate valenti e portateci dei frutti della regione». Era infatti il tempo in cui le prime uve si possono già mangiare. | 21 So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near the entrance of Hamath. |
| 22 Partiti dunque, esplorarono la regione del deserto di Sin fino a Roob in direzione di Emat. | 22 They went up into the Negeb, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were there. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) |
| 23 Camminarono verso mezzogiorno, e vennero in Hebron, ove erano Achiman, Sisai e Tolmai figli d'Enac; Hebron era stata fondata sette anni prima di Tanis città dell'Egitto. | 23 And they came to the Valley of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a pole between two of them; they brought also some pomegranates and figs. |
| 24 Giunti sino al Torrente del Grappolo, tagliarono un tralcio di vite con un grappolo, e lo portarono in due su una stanga. Presero anche delle melagrane e dei fichi di quel luogo, | 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the men of Israel cut down from there. |
| 25 che fu chiamato " Neelescol ", cioè il " Torrente del Grappolo ", perchè di lì avevano preso i figli d'Israele quel grappolo. | 25 At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. |
| 26 Percorsa tutta la regione, tornarono gli esploratori dopo quaranta giorni, | 26 And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. |
| 27 e vennero a Mosè ed Aronne, ed a tutta l'assemblea de' figli d'Israele nel deserto di Faran, in Cades. Parlarono ad essi ed a tutta la moltitudine, mostrarono i frutti di quella terra, | 27 And they told him, "We came to the land to which you sent us; it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. |
| 28 e raccontarono e dissero: «Fummo nella terra alla quale ci mandaste, ove davvero scorre il latte ed il miele come si può vedere da questi frutti. | 28 Yet the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large; and besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. |
| 29 Ma ha abitanti gagliardi, città grandi e murate. Vi abbiamo veduti i discendenti di Enac; | 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan." |
| 30 l'Amalecita abita a mezzogiorno; lo Heteo, il Jebuseo e l'Amorreo, sulle montagne; il Cananeo poi, presso il mare, e lungo il Giordano». | 30 But Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, "Let us go up at once, and occupy it; for we are well able to overcome it." |
| 31 Cominciando a queste parole un mormorio del popolo contro Mosè, Caleb per sedarlo disse: «Andiamo, ed impossessiamoci di quella terra, perchè la potremo conquistare». | 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we." |
| 32 Ma gli altri ch'erano stati con lui dicevano: «Giammai potremo soggiogare quel popolo, perchè è più forte di noi». | 32 So they brought to the people of Israel an evil report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land, through which we have gone, to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature. |
| 33 E svalutarono presso i figli d'Israele la terra che avevano esplorata, dicendo: «La terra che abbiamo perlustrato divora i suoi abitanti; la gente che v'abbiamo veduto è di straordinaria statura. | 33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim); and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them." |
| 34 V'abbiam veduto de' mostri tra' discendenti di Enac, razza di giganti, a petto dei quali noi parevamo locuste». | |
