NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
After this, the fol owing events took place. Absalom son of David had a beautiful sister whose namewas Tamar; Amnon son of David fel in love with her.1 Factum est autem post hæc ut Absalom filii David sororem speciosissimam, vocabulo Thamar, adamaret Amnon filius David,
Amnon was so obsessed with his sister Tamar that it made him il , since she was a virgin and Amnonthought it impossible to do anything to her.2 et deperiret eam valde, ita ut propter amorem ejus ægrotaret : quia cum esset virgo, difficile ei videbatur ut quippiam inhoneste ageret cum ea.
But Amnon had a friend called Jonadab son of Shimeah, David's brother, and Jonadab was a veryshrewd man.3 Erat autem Amnon amicus nomine Jonadab, filius Semmaa fratris David, vir prudens valde.
'Son of the king,' he said, 'tel me why, morning after morning, you look so worn? Won't you tel me?'Amnon replied, 'I am in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister.'4 Qui dixit ad eum : Quare sic attenuaris macie, fili regis, per singulos dies ? cur non indicas mihi ? Dixitque ei Amnon : Thamar sororem fratris mei Absalom amo.
Then Jonadab said, 'Take to your bed, pretend to be ill and, when your father comes to visit you, say,"Please let my sister Tamar come and give me something to eat; let her prepare the food where I can see. Whatshe gives me I shal eat." '5 Cui respondit Jonadab : Cuba super lectum tuum, et languorem simula : cumque venerit pater tuus ut visitet te, dic ei : Veniat, oro, Thamar soror mea, ut det mihi cibum, et faciat pulmentum, ut comedam de manu ejus.
So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. The king then came to visit him and Amnon said to theking, 'Please let my sister Tamar come and make a cake or two where I can watch. What she gives me, I shaleat.'6 Accubuit itaque Amnon, et quasi ægrotare cœpit : cumque venisset rex ad visitandum eum, ait Amnon ad regem : Veniat, obsecro, Thamar soror mea, ut faciat in oculis meis duas sorbitiunculas, et cibum capiam de manu ejus.
David then sent word to Tamar at the palace, 'Go to your brother Amnon's house and prepare somefood for him.'7 Misit ergo David ad Thamar domum, dicens : Veni in domum Amnon fratris tui, et fac ei pulmentum.
Tamar went to the house of her brother Amnon who was lying there in bed. She took dough andkneaded it, and she made some cakes while he watched, and baked the cakes.8 Venitque Thamar in domum Amnon fratris sui : ille autem jacebat. Quæ tollens farinam commiscuit, et liquefaciens, in oculis ejus coxit sorbitiunculas.
She then took the pan and dished them up in front of him, but he refused to eat. Amnon said, 'Leteveryone leave me!' So everyone withdrew.9 Tollensque quod coxerat, effudit, et posuit coram eo, et noluit comedere : dixitque Amnon : Ejicite universos a me. Cumque ejecissent omnes,
Amnon then said to Tamar, 'Bring the food to the inner room, so that I can eat what you give me.' SoTamar took the cakes which she had made and brought them to her brother Amnon in the inner room.10 dixit Amnon ad Thamar : Infer cibum in conclave, ut vescar de manu tua. Tulit ergo Thamar sorbitiunculas quas fecerat, et intulit ad Amnon fratrem suum in conclave.
And as she was offering the food to him, he caught hold of her and said, 'Come to bed with me,sister!'11 Cumque obtulisset ei cibum, apprehendit eam, et ait : Veni, cuba mecum, soror mea.
She replied, 'No, brother! Do not force me! This is no way to behave in Israel. Do not do anything sodisgraceful!12 Quæ respondit ei : Noli frater mi, noli opprimere me : neque enim hoc fas est in Israël : noli facere stultitiam hanc.
Wherever should I go? I should be marked with this shame, while you would become disgraced inIsrael. Why not go and speak to the king? He wil not refuse to give me to you.'13 Ego enim ferre non potero opprobrium meum, et tu eris quasi unus de insipientibus in Israël : quin potius loquere ad regem, et non negabit me tibi.
But he would not listen to her; he overpowered her and raped her.14 Noluit autem acquiescere precibus ejus, sed prævalens viribus oppressit eam, et cubavit cum ea.
Amnon was then seized with extreme hatred for her; the hatred he now felt for her was greater thanhis earlier love. 'Get up and go!' he said.15 Et exosam eam habuit Amnon odio magno nimis : ita ut majus esset odium quo oderat eam, amore quo ante dilexerat. Dixitque ei Amnon : Surge, et vade.
She said, 'No, brother! To send me away would be worse than the other wrong you have done me!'But he would not listen to her.16 Quæ respondit ei : Majus est hoc malum quod nunc agis adversum me, quam quod ante fecisti, expellens me. Et noluit audire eam :
He cal ed his personal servant. 'Rid me of this woman!' he said. 'Throw her out and bolt the doorbehind her!'17 sed vocato puero qui ministrabat ei, dixit : Ejice hanc a me foras, et claude ostium post eam.
(She was wearing a magnificent dress, for this was what the king's unmarried daughters wore indays gone by.) So the servant put her out and bolted the door behind her.18 Quæ induta erat talari tunica : hujuscemodi enim filiæ regis virgines vestibus utebantur. Ejecit itaque eam minister illius foras : clausitque fores post eam.
Tamar put dust on her head, tore the magnificent dress which she was wearing, laid her hand on herhead, and went away, crying aloud as she went.19 Quæ aspergens cinerem capiti suo, scissa talari tunica, impositisque manibus super caput suum, ibat ingrediens, et clamans.
Her brother Absalom said to her, 'Has Amnon your brother been with you? Sister, be quiet; he is yourbrother; do not take the matter to heart!' Tamar, however, went back to her brother Absalom's houseinconsolable.20 Dixit autem ei Absalom frater suus : Numquid Amnon frater tuus concubuit tecum ? sed nunc soror, tace : frater tuus est : neque affligas cor tuum pro hac re. Mansit itaque Thamar contabescens in domo Absalom fratris sui.
When King David heard the whole story, he was very angry; but he had no wish to harm his sonAmnon, whom he loved because he was his first-born.21 Cum autem audisset rex David verba hæc, contristatus est valde : et noluit contristare spiritum Amnon filii sui, quoniam diligebat eum, quia primogenitus erat ei.
Absalom, however, would not so much as speak to Amnon, since he hated Amnon for having rapedhis sister Tamar.22 Porro non est locutus Absalom ad Amnon nec malum nec bonum : oderat enim Absalom Amnon, eo quod violasset Thamar sororem suam.
Two years later, when Absalom had the sheep-shearers at Baal-Hazor, which is near Ephraim, heinvited al the king's sons.23 Factum est autem post tempus biennii ut tonderentur oves Absalom in Baalhasor, quæ est juxta Ephraim : et vocavit Absalom omnes filios regis,
Absalom went to the king and said, 'Now sir, your servant has the sheep-shearers. Wil the king andhis retinue be pleased to come with your servant?'24 venitque ad regem, et ait ad eum : Ecce tondentur oves servi tui : veniat, oro, rex cum servis suis ad servum suum.
'No, my son,' the king replied, 'we must not al come and be a burden to you.' And though Absalomwas insistent, he would not go but dismissed him.25 Dixitque rex ad Absalom : Noli fili mi, noli rogare ut veniamus omnes et gravemus te. Cum autem cogeret eum, et noluisset ire, benedixit ei.
Absalom persisted, 'Then at least let my brother Amnon come with us.' The king said, 'Why should hego with you?'26 Et ait Absalom : Si non vis venire, veniat, obsecro, nobiscum saltem Amnon frater meus. Dixitque ad eum rex : Non est necesse ut vadat tecum.
On Absalom's insistence, however, he let Amnon and al the king's sons to go with him. Absalomprepared a royal banquet27 Coëgit itaque Absalom eum, et dimisit cum eo Amnon et universos filios regis. Feceratque Absalom convivium quasi convivium regis.
and then gave this order to the servants, 'Listen careful y; when Amnon's heart is merry with wineand I say, "Strike Amnon down", then kil him. Don't be afraid. Have I not myself given you the order? Use yourstrength and show your mettle!'28 Præceperat autem Absalom pueris suis, dicens : Observate cum temulentus fuerit Amnon vino, et dixero vobis : Percutite eum, et interficite : nolite timere : ego enim sum qui præcipio vobis : roboramini, et estote viri fortes.
Absalom's servants treated Amnon as Absalom had ordered. The king's sons al leapt to their feet, mounted their mules and fled.29 Fecerunt ergo pueri Absalom adversum Amnon sicut præceperat eis Absalom. Surgentesque omnes filii regis ascenderunt singuli mulas suas, et fugerunt.
While they were on the road, word reached David, 'Absalom has killed all the king's sons; not one ofthem is left.'30 Cumque adhuc pergerent in itinere, fama pervenit ad David, dicens : Percussit Absalom omnes filios regis, et non remansit ex eis saltem unus.
The king stood up, tore his clothes and threw himself on the ground. Al his officers tore their clothestoo.31 Surrexit itaque rex, et scidit vestimenta sua, et cecidit super terram : et omnes servi illius qui assistebant ei, sciderunt vestimenta sua.
Jonadab son of Shimeah, David's brother, then spoke up and said, 'Do not let my lord take to heartthe report that al the young men, the king's sons, have been killed, since only Amnon is dead: for Absalom hasbeen promising himself to do this since the day when Amnon raped his sister Tamar.32 Respondens autem Jonadab filius Semmaa fratris David, dixit : Ne æstimet dominus meus rex quod omnes pueri filii regis occisi sint : Amnon solus mortuus est, quoniam in ore Absalom erat positus ex die qua oppressit Thamar sororem ejus.
So my lord the king must not imagine that al the king's sons are dead; only Amnon is dead33 Nunc ergo ne ponat dominus meus rex super cor suum verbum istud, dicens : Omnes filii regis occisi sunt : quoniam Amnon solus mortuus est.
and Absalom has fled.' The man on sentry duty looked up and saw a large troop coming along theroad from Bahurim. The sentry came to tell the king, 'I have seen some people coming down the Bahurim roadon the mountainside.'34 Fugit autem Absalom. Et elevavit puer speculator oculos suos, et aspexit : et ecce populus multus veniebat per iter devium ex latere montis.
Jonadab then said to the king, 'These are the king's sons arriving: what your servant said is exactlywhat happened.'35 Dixit autem Jonadab ad regem : Ecce filii regis adsunt : juxta verbum servi tui, sic factum est.
He had scarcely finished speaking when the king's sons arrived and wept aloud; the king and al hisretinue wept aloud too.36 Cumque cessasset loqui, apparuerunt et filii regis : et intrantes levaverunt vocem suam, et fleverunt : sed et rex et omnes servi ejus fleverunt ploratu magno nimis.
Absalom had gone to Talmai son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. The king mourned for his son everyday.37 Porro Absalom fugiens abiit ad Tholomai filium Ammiud regem Gessur. Luxit ergo David filium suum cunctis diebus.
When Absalom had gone to Geshur, he stayed there for three years.38 Absalom autem cum fugisset, et venisset in Gessur, fuit ibi tribus annis.
Once the king was consoled over Amnon's death, his anger against Absalom subsided.39 Cessavitque rex David persequi Absalom, eo quod consolatus esset super Amnon interitu.
