Job 23

Then Job answered, and said:1 Job prit la parole et dit:
Now also my words are in bitterness, and the hand of my scourge is more grievous than my mourning.2 C'est toujours une révolte que ma plainte; sa main reste pesante, malgré mon gémissement.
Who will grant me that I might know and find him, and come even to his throne?3 Oh! Si je savais comment l'atteindre, parvenir jusqu'à sa demeure,
I would set judgment before him, and would fill my mouth with complaints.4 j'ouvrirais un procès devant lui, ma bouche serait pleine de griefs.
That I might know the words that he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me.5 Je connaîtrais les termes de sa réponse, attentif à ce qu'il me dirait.
I would not that he should contend with me with much strength, nor overwhelm me with the weight of his greatness.6 Jetterait-il toute sa force dans ce débat avec moi? Non, il lui suffirait de me prêter attention.
Let him propose equity against me, and let my judgment come to victory.7 Il reconnaîtrait dans son adversaire un homme droit, et je ferais triompher ma cause à jamais.
But if I go to the east, he appeareth not; if to the west, I shall not understand him.8 Si je vais vers l'orient, il est absent; vers l'occident, je ne l'aperçois pas.
If to the left hand, what shall I do? I shall not take hold on him: if I turn myself to the right hand, I shall not see him.9 Quand je le cherche au nord, il n'est pas discernable, il reste invisible, si je me tourne au midi.
But he knoweth my way, and has tried me as gold that passeth through the fire:10 Et pourtant, toutes mes démarches, il les connaît! Qu'il me passe au creuset: or pur j'en sortirai!
My foot hath followed his steps, I have kept his way, and have not declined from it.11 Mon pied s'est attaché à ses pas, j'ai suivi sa route sans dévier;
I have not departed from the commandments of his lips, and the words of his mouth I have hid in my bosom.12 je n'ai pas négligé le commandement de ses lèvres, j'ai abrité dans mon sein les paroles de sa bouche.
For he is alone, and no man can turn away his thought: and whatsoever is soul hath desired, that hath he done.13 Mais lui décide, qui le fera changer? Ce qu'il a projeté, il l'accomplit.
And when he shall have fulfilled his will in me, many other like things are also at hand with him.14 Il exécutera donc ma sentence, comme tant d'autres de ses décrets!
And therefore I am troubled at his presence, and when I consider him I am made pensive with fear.15 C'est pourquoi, devant lui, je suis terrifié; plus j'y songe, plus il me fait peur.
God hath softened my heart, and the Almighty hath troubled me.16 Dieu a brisé mon courage, Shaddaï me remplit d'effroi.
For I have not perished because of the darkness that hangs over me, neither hath the mist covered my face.17 Car je n'ai pas été anéanti devant les ténèbres, mais il a recouvert ma face d'obscurité.
