1 In those days arose Mathathias the son of John, the son of Simeon, a priest of the sons of Joarib, from Jerusalem, and he abode in the mountain of Modin.	1 (Allora) in quel tempo si levò suso Matatia (sacerdote) figliuolo di Giovanni, figliuolo di Simeone, sacerdote de' figliuoli di Ioarib di Ierusalem, e fermossi nel monte di Modin.
2 And he had five sons: John who was surnamed Gaddis:	2 Egli avea V figliuoli; il primo avea nome Giovanni, il quale era chiamato Gaddis.
3 And Simon, who was surnamed Thasi:	3 Il secondo fu Simeone, chiamato Tasi.
4 And Judas, who was called Machabeus:	4 Il terzo fu Giuda, chiamato Maccabeo.
5 And Eleazar, who was surnamed Abaron: and Jonathan, who was surnamed Apphus.	5 Il quarto fu Eleazaro, chiamato Abaron; il quinto fu Ionata, chiamato Appo.
6 These saw the evils that were done in the people of Juda, and in Jerusalem.	6 Costoro vedevano i grandi mali che si facevano nel popolo de' Giudei e in Ierusalem (e nelli altri luoghi).
7 And Mathathias said: Woe is me, wherefore was I born to see the ruin of my people, and the ruin of the holy city, and to dwell there, when it is given into the hands of the enemies?	7 Onde Matatia disse (loro): ohimè misero, per che ci nacqui io mai per vedere l'abbassamento del popolo mio, e quello della santa cittade, e veggo ch' ella è data in balìa de' nimici?
8 The holy places are come into the hands of strangers: her temple is become as a man without honour.	8 E le sue cose [sante] sono concedute nelle mani delli stranieri; e lo suo tempio è fatto sì come l'uomo mercenaio.
9 The vessels of her glory are carried away captive: her old men are murdered in the streets, and her young men are fallen by the sword of the enemies.	9 E li vasi della sua gloria presi e tramutati sono; i suoi vecchi uomini sono (morti e) uccisi su per le piazze, e li suoi giovani sono abbattuti colle coltella de' suoi nimici.
10 What nation hath not inherited her kingdom, and gotten of her spoils?	10 Qual gente è quella che non sia erede del suo regno, e che non abbia le sue ricchezze rubate?
11 All her ornaments are taken away. She that was free is made a slave.	11 E tutto il suo ornamento gli è istato tolto. Ed ella era libera e franca, e sì è divenuta serva e ancilla.
12 And behold our sanctuary, and our beauty, and our glory is laid waste, and the Gentiles have defiled them.	12 Ora adunque (da poi che) le nostre sante cose e la bellezza nostra e la nostra nobile nominanza è distrutta; e le genti l'hanno corrotta.
13 To what end then should we live any longer?	13 A che viviamo noi più?
14 And Mathathias and his sons rent their garments, and they covered themselves with haircloth, and made great lamentation.	14 Allora Matatia e li suoi figliuoli stracciarono le loro vestimenta; e vestironsi di cilicio, e piansono amaramente.
15 And they that were sent from king Antiochus came thither, to compel them that were fled into the city of Modin, to sacrifice, and to burn incense, and to depart from the law of God.	15 E intanto vi giunsono li ambasciatori del re Antioco, per costrignere coloro ch' erano fuggiti nella cittade di Modin a sacrificare (agl' idoli) e ad accendere incensi e a dipartirsi dalla legge di Dio.
16 And many of the people of Israel consented, and came to them: but Mathathias and his sons stood firm.	16 Avvenne che veramente molti del popolo d' Israel consentendo se n' andarono a loro; ma Matatia e li suoi figliuoli costantemente istettono fermi.
17 And they that were sent from Antiochus, answering, said to Mathathias: Thou art a ruler, and an honourable, and great man in this city, and adorned with sons, and brethren.	17 Onde messaggi e ambasciatori del re Antioco dissono a Matatia: tu se' principe, e molto nominato in questa cittade, e se' grande e ornato di figliuoli e di fratelli.
18 Therefore come thou first, and obey the king's commandment, as all nations have done, and the men of Juda, and they that remain in Jerusalem: and thou, and thy sons, shall be in the number of the king's friends, and enriched with gold, and silver, and many presents.	18 Adunque tra' ti inanzi, e tu primaio ubbidisci al comandamento del re Antioco, sì come hanno fatto tutte le genti, e gli uomini (del popolo) de' Giudei, e quegli che sono rimasi in Ierusalem; e tu e li tuoi figliuoli sarete delli amici dello re, e sarai adornato e accresciuto d' oro e d' ariento e di molti altri doni.
19 Then Mathathias answered, and said with a loud voice: Although all nations obey king Antiochus, so as to depart every man from the service of the law of his fathers, and consent to his commandments:	19 Allora rispose Matatia, e disse in alta voce: certo, certo, se tutte le genti ubbidiscono allo re Antioco, e ciascuno si parte dalla ubbidienza della legge de' suoi padri, e consentono al comandamento del re,
20 I and my sons, and my brethren will obey the law of our fathers.	20 io pure ubbidirò, insieme colli miei figliuoli e fratelli, alla legge de' nostri padri.
21 God be merciful unto us: it is not profitable for us to forsake the law, and the justices of God:	21 E Iddio ci sia in aiuto; però che a noi non. è utile di abbandonare la legge e le giustizie di Dio.
22 We will not hearken to the words of king Antiochus, neither will we sacrifice, and transgress the commandments of our law, to go another way.	22 Noi non intenderemo alle parole del re Antioco, e non sacrificheremo, trapassando li comandamenti della nostra legge, per tenere altra via.
23 Now as he left off speaking these words, there came a certain Jew in the sight of all to sacrifice to the idols upon the altar in the city of Modin, according to the king's commandment.	23 E si tosto come egli fece fine alle sue parole, sì si trasse inanzi uno Giudeo; e dinanzi agli occhi di tutti coloro fece sacrificio alli idoli sopra l'altare della città di Modin, secondo il comandamento del re Antioco.
24 And Mathathias saw and was grieved, and his reins trembled, and his wrath was kindled according to the judgment of the law, and running upon him he slew him upon the altar:	24 E vidde questo Matatia, e sì se ne dolse, e aprionsi le sue reni, e accesesi il suo furore secondo il giudicio della legge; e insultando davanti, l'uccise sopra l'altare.
25 Moreover the man whom king Antiochus had sent, who compelled them to sacrifice, he slew at the same time, and pulled down the altar.	25 Ancora uccise quello uomo il quale avea mandato il detto re a costrignere di sacrificare; e distrusse l'altare.
26 And shewed zeal for the law, as Phinees did by Zamri the son of Salomi.	26 E mostrò d'amare molto teneramente la legge di Dio, come per addietro fece Finees a Zamri figliuolo di Salomi.
27 And Mathathias cried out in the city with a loud voice, saying: Every one that hath zeal for the law, and maintaineth the testament, let him follow me.	27 E gridòe ad alta voce Matatia nella cittade, e disse: chiunque ama la legge e mantiene il testamento, mi venga dietro.
28 So he, and his sons fled into the mountains, and left all that they had in the city.	28 Allora si fuggì, egli e li suoi figliuoli, nelli monti; e abbandonarono ciò che loro aveano nella cittade.
29 Then many that sought after judgment, and justice, went down into the desert:	29 Allora fu egli seguitato da molti, i quali andarono dopo lui nello deserto, desiderando di vivere secondo la giustizia e le ragioni della legge.
30 And they abode there, they and their children, and their wives, and their cattle: because afflictions increased upon them.	30 E ivi stettono loro, e li loro figliuoli, e le loro donne, e le loro pecore; però che molti mali erano indurati sopra loro.
31 And it was told to the king's men, and to the army that was in Jerusalem in the city of David, that certain men who had broken the king's commandment, were gone away into the secret places in the wilderness, and that many were gone after them.	31 E annunziato fue agli uomini del re (Antioco), e allo esercito che era in Ierusalem, città di David, come alquanti uomini s' erano ricolti nel deserto, i quali aveano dispregiato li comandamenti del re, ed erano in luoghi celati, e molti gli aveano seguiti.
32 And forthwith they went out towards them, and made war against them on the sabbath day,	32 Dond' è che loro incontanente andarono loro addosso, e commisono battaglia incontro a loro il die del sabbato.
33 And they said to them: Do you still resist? come forth, and do according to the edict of king Antiochus, and you shall live.	33 E dissono loro: dunque ancora vi ribellate? uscite fuori, e ubbidite al comandamento del re e viverete.
34 And they said: We will not come forth, neither will we obey the king's edict, to profane the sabbath day.	34 E quegli rispuosono: noi non usciremo fuori, e non ubbidiremo al comandamento del re, per corrompere il di del sabbato.
35 And they made haste to give them battle.	35 Allora commisono battaglia contro a loro.
36 But they answered them not, neither did they cast a stone at them, nor stopped up the secret places,	36 Ma loro non si difesono; ma una pietra solamente non gittarono contro a loro (e non chiusono la porta) e non armarono i celati luoghi,
37 Saying: Let us all die in our innocency: and heaven and earth shall be witnesses for us, that you put us to death wrongfully.	37 dicendo: moiamo nella nostra simplicitade; e siano nostri testimoni il cielo e la terra, che voi ingiustamente noi uccidete.
38 So they gave them battle on the sabbath: and they were slain with their wives, and their children, and their cattle, to the number of a thousand persons.	38 E così combatterono (quegli del re) contro a loro in sabbato; e furono morti loro e le loro donne. e li loro figliuoli e il loro bestiame (si se ne menarono); e morirono (delle genti di Giuda) nel torno di mille persone.
39 And Mathathias and his friends heard of it, and they mourned for them exceedingly.	39 E quando Matatia e gli altri suoi amici il seppono, molto se ne dolsono, e fècionne grande pianto.
40 And every man said to his neighbour: If we shall all do as our brethren have done, and not fight against the heathens for our lives, and our justifications: they will now quickly root us out of the earth.	40 Allora costoro incominciarono a dire l' uno. all' altro: se noi faremo così come feciono li nostri fratelli, e non combatteremo contro a' nostri nemici per l'anime nostre e per le nostre ragioni, tostamente ci leveranno di terra.
41 And they determined in that day, saying: Whosoever shall come up against us to fight on the sabbath day, we will fight against him: and we will not all die, as our brethren that were slain in the secret places.	41 E allora propuosono e fermarono in quel dì di combattere contro a chi venisse incontro a loro, e di non rifiutare la battaglia il dì del sabbato, dicendo: combattiamo, acciò che noi non moiamo tutti sì come feciono li nostri fratelli per li luoghi nascosi.
42 Then was assembled to them the congregation of the Assideans, the stoutest of Israel, every one that had a good will for the law.	42 Allora si radunarono con loro la sinagoga degli Assidei, uomini valenti e pieni di forza, e voluntarosi di mantenere la legge.
43 And all they that fled from the evils, joined themselves to them, and were a support to them.	43 E aggiunsono con loro tutti quelli che fuggivano li peccati; e fecionsi con loro più forti.
44 And they gathered an army, and slew the sinners in their wrath, and the wicked men in their indignation: and the rest fled to the nations for safety.	44 Loro radunarono oste, e percossono li peccatori nella ira, e li uomini malvagi nella loro indegnazione; e gli altri fuggirono alle nazioni per iscampare.
45 And Mathathias and his friends went round about, and they threw down the altars:	45 E attorniò Matatia con li amici suoi (tutto il paese); e distrussono gli altari (de' pagani nella loro fortezza).
46 And they circumcised all the children whom they found in the confines of Israel that were uncircumcised: and they did valiantly.	46 Circoncisono tutti e' fanciulli non circoncisi, quanti ne trovarono nel popolo d' Israel.
47 And they pursued after the children of pride, and the work prospered in their hands:	47 E perseguitarono i figliuoli della superbia; e fue vittoriosa l'opera nelle loro mani.
48 And they recovered the law out of the hands of the nations, and out of the hands of the kings: and they yielded not the horn to the sinner.	48 Ed estrassono la legge delle mani delle genti, e delle potenze delli regni, e non consentirono al peccato.
49 Now the days drew near that Mathathias should die, and he said to his sons: Now hath pride and chastisement gotten strength, and the time of destruction, and the wrath of indignation:	49 E approssimandosi il dì della morte di Matatia, egli disse alli suoi figliuoli: ora è confortata la superbia (del re Antioco) e la guastagione (nostra per li nostri peccati) e il tempo della sovversione (del culto divino) e l'ira della indegnazione (di Dio).
50 Now therefore, O my sons, be ye zealous for the law, and give your lives for the covenant of your fathers.	50 E però, figliuoli miei, siate amatori della legge (di Dio), e ponete l' anime vostre per difensione del testamento de' padri.
51 And call to remembrance the works of the fathers, which they have done in their generations: and you shall receive great glory, and an everlasting name.	51 E ricordatevi delle opere loro, le quali egli facevano nelle loro (etadi e) generazioni; e acquisterete gloria e fama perpetua.
52 Was not Abraham found faithful in temptation, and it was reputed to him unto justice?	52 Or non fue trovato Abraam fedele nella tentazione, e riputato gli fu a giustizia?
53 Joseph in the time of his distress kept the commandment, and he was made lord of Egypt.	53 E Iosef nel tempo della sua tribulazione guardò il comandamento (di Dio), e divenne signore di Egitto.
54 Phinees our father, by being fervent in the zeal of God, received the covenant of an everlasting priesthood.	54 Finees, nostro padre, mostrando tenero amore alla legge di Dio, ricevette testamento di sacerdozio eterno.
55 Jesus, whilst he fulfilled the word, was made ruler in Israel.	55 Isue, ubbidendo alla parola di Dio, divenne duca in Israel.
56 Caleb, for bearing witness before the congregation, received an inheritance.	56 Caleb, testimoniando (la veritade) nella chiesa, ricevette ereditade.
57 David by his mercy obtained the throne of an everlasting kingdom.	57 David nella sua misericordia acquistòe seggio di reame perpetuo.
58 Elias, while he was full of zeal for the law, was taken up into heaven.	58 Elia, amando fortemente il fervore della legge, fu ricevuto in cielo.
59 Ananias and Azarias and Misael by believing, were delivered out of the flame.	59 Anania, Azaria e Misael, credendo (fermamente), furono liberati della fiamma.
60 Daniel in his innocency was delivered out of the mouth of the lions.	60 Daniel nella sua puritade fu liberato dalla bocca de' leoni.
61 And thus consider through all generations: that none that trust in him fail in strength.	61 E così pensate per generazioni e per etadi; chè chiunque spera in Dio non viene meno.
62 And fear not the words of a sinful man, for his glory is dung, and worms:	62 E però non temete delle parole de' peccatori; perciò che la gloria loro è bruttura e vermini.
63 To day he is lifted up, and to morrow he shall not be found, because he is returned into his earth; and his thought is come to nothing.	63 Oggi si insuperbisce il peccatore, e domani non si ritrova; imperciò che già è tornato in terra, e lo suo pensiero tornato è a niente.
64 You therefore, my sons, take courage, and behave manfully in the law: for by it you shall be glorious.	64 Voi adunque, figliuoli miei, confortatevi, e valentemente adoperate nella legge; imperò che (facendo quelle cose le quali vi sono comandate nella legge dal nostro Signore Iddio) in quella sarete gloriosi.
65 And behold, I know that your brother Simon is a man of counsel: give ear to him always, and he shall be a father to you.	65 E però ecco Simone, vostro fratello; imperò ch' io so ch' egli è uomo di consiglio, uditelo continuamente, ed egli vi fia padre.
66 And Judas Machabeus who is valiant and strong from his youth up, let him be the leader of your army, and he shall manage the war of the people.	66 Ma Giuda Maccabeo, uomo prode e forte insino dalla sua gioventù, sia principe (della vostra guerra e) della vostra cavalleria; ed egli faccia la battaglia del popolo.
67 And you shall take to you all that observe the law: and revenge ye the wrong of your people.	67 E radunerete con voi tutti i seguitatori della legge; e fate vendetta del vostro popolo.
68 Render to the Gentiles their reward, and take heed to the precepts of the law.	68 E rendete degno merito alle genti, e intendete ne' comandamenti della legge.
69 And he blessed them, and was joined to his fathers.	69 E poi gli benedisse, e allora morì Matatia, e fue posto cogli altri suoi padri
70 And he died in the hundred and forty-sixth year: and he was buried by his sons in the sepulchres of his fathers in Modin, and all Israel mourned for him with great mourning.	70 nel CXLVI anno (del regno de' Greci); e fue seppellito da' suoi figliuoli nella cittade di Modin nel sepolcro de' suoi padri; e tutta la gente d' Israel lo piansono con grandissimo lamento.
