DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Le parole di Agur, figliuolo d’Iache; il sermone profetico che quell’uomo pronunziò ad Itiel; ad Itiel, e ad Ucal.	1 The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh, of Massa. Prophecy of this man for Ithiel, for Ithiel and for Ucal.
2 CERTO io son troppo idiota, per esser gran personaggio; E non ho pur l’intendimento d’un uomo volgare;	2 I am myself the stupidest of people, bereft of human intel igence,
3 E non ho imparata sapienza; Ma io so la scienza de’ santi.	3 I have not learnt wisdom, and I lack the knowledge of the holy ones.
4 Chi è salito in cielo, e n’è disceso? Chi ha raccolto il vento nelle sue pugna? Chi ha serrate le acque nella sua vesta? Chi ha posti tutti i confini della terra? Quale è il suo nome, o quale è il nome del suo figliuolo, Se tu il sai?	4 Who has mounted to the heavens, then come down again? Who has gathered the wind in the clasp ofhis hand? Who has wrapped the waters in his cloak? Who has set al the ends of the earth firm? What is hisname? What is his child's name? Do you know?
5 Ogni parola di Dio è purgata col fuoco; Egli è scudo a coloro che sperano in lui.	5 Every word of God is unal oyed, a shield to those who take refuge in him.
6 Non aggiungere alle sue parole; Che talora egli non ti arguisca, e che tu non sii trovato bugiardo	6 To his words make no addition, lest he reprove you and account you a liar.
7 Io ti ho chieste due cose, o Dio; Non rifiutarmele avanti che io muoia:	7 Two things I beg of you, do not grudge me them before I die:
8 Allontana da me vanità e parole di bugia; Non mandarmi povertà, nè ricchezze; Cibami del mio pane quotidiano;	8 keep falsehood and lies far from me, give me neither poverty nor riches, grant me only my share offood,
9 Che talora io non mi satolli, e ti rinneghi, E dica: Chi è il Signore? Che talora altresì io non impoverisca, e rubi, Ed usi indegnamente il Nome dell’Iddio mio	9 for fear that, surrounded by plenty, I should fall away and say, 'Yahweh-who is Yahweh?' or else, in destitution, take to stealing and profane the name of my God.
10 Non dir male del servo appo il suo padrone; Che talora egli non ti maledica, e tu ti renda colpevole.	10 Do not blacken a slave's name to his master, lest he curse you, and you suffer for it.
11 Vi è una generazione d’uomini che maledice suo padre; E non benedice sua madre.	11 There is a breed of person that curses his father and does not bless his mother;
12 Vi è una generazione d’uomini che si reputa netta, E non è lavata della sua lordura.	12 a breed that, laying claim to purity, has not yet been cleansed of its filth;
13 Vi è una generazione d’uomini che ha gli occhi grandemente elevati, E le palpebre alzate.	13 a breed haughty of eye, with disdain in every glance;
14 Vi è una generazione d’uomini i cui denti sono spade, Ed i mascellari coltelli, Per divorare i poveri d’in su la terra, Ed i bisognosi d’infra gli uomini	14 a breed with swords for teeth, with knives for jaws, devouring the oppressed from the earth and theneedy from the land.
15 La mignatta ha due figliuole, che dicono: Apporta, apporta. Queste tre cose non si saziano giammai; Anzi queste quattro non dicono giammai: Basta!	15 The leech has two daughters: 'Give! Give!' There are three insatiable things, four, indeed, that neversay, 'Enough!'
16 Il sepolcro, la matrice sterile, La terra che non si sazia giammai d’acqua, E il fuoco, che giammai non dice: Basta!	16 Sheol, the barren womb, earth which can never have its fil of water, fire which never says, 'Enough!'
17 I corvi del torrente trarranno, E i figli dell’aquila mangeranno gli occhi Di chi beffa suo padre, E sprezza di ubbidire a sua madre	17 The eye which looks jeeringly on a father, and scorns the obedience due to a mother, wil be peckedout by the ravens of the val ey, and eaten by the vultures.
18 Queste tre cose mi sono occulte; Anzi, io non conosco queste quattro:	18 There are three things beyond my comprehension, four, indeed, that I do not understand:
19 La traccia dell’aquila nell’aria, La traccia del serpente sopra il sasso, La traccia della nave in mezzo del mare, La traccia dell’uomo nella giovane.	19 the way of an eagle through the skies, the way of a snake over the rock, the way of a ship in mid-ocean, the way of a man with a girl.
20 Tale è il procedere della donna adultera; Ella mangia, e si frega la bocca, E dice: Io non ho commessa alcuna iniquità.	20 This is how an adulteress behaves: she eats, then wipes her mouth and says, 'I have done nothingwrong!'
21 Per tre cose la terra trema; Anzi per quattro, ch’ella non può comportare:	21 There are three things at which the earth trembles, four, indeed, which it cannot endure:
22 Per lo servo, quando regna; E per l’uomo stolto, quando è satollo di pane;	22 a slave become king, a brute gorged with food,
23 Per la donna odiosa, quando si marita; E per la serva, quando è erede della sua padrona	23 a hateful woman wed at last, a servant girl inheriting from her mistress.
24 Queste quattro cose son delle più piccole della terra, E pur son savie, e molto avvedute:	24 There are four creatures little on the earth, though they are wisest of the wise:
25 Le formiche, che sono un popolo senza forze, E pure apparecchiano di state il lor cibo;	25 ants, a race with no strength, yet in the summer they make sure of their food;
26 I conigli, che sono un popolo senza potenza, E pur fanno i lor ricetti nelle roccie;	26 the coneys, a race without defences, yet they make their home in the rocks;
27 Le locuste, che non hanno re, E pure escono fuori tutte a stormo, divise per ischiere;	27 locusts, which have no king, yet they al march in good order;
28 Il ramarro, che si aggrappa con le mani, Ed è ne’ palazzi dei re	28 lizards, which you can catch in your hand, yet they frequent the palaces of kings.
29 Queste tre cose hanno un bel passo; Anzi queste quattro hanno una bella andatura:	29 There are three things of stately tread, four, indeed, of stately walk:
30 Il leone, la più forte delle bestie, Che non si volge indietro per tema di alcuno;	30 the lion, bravest of beasts, he wil draw back from nothing;
31 Il gallo compresso di fianchi, e il becco, E il re, appresso al quale niuno può levare il capo.	31 a vigorous cock, a he-goat, and the king when he harangues his people.
32 Se tu hai fatto qualche follia, innalzandoti; Ovvero, se hai divisato alcun male, mettiti la mano in su la bocca.	32 If you have been foolish enough to fly into a passion and now have second thoughts, lay your handon your lips.
33 Perciocchè, come chi rimena il latte ne fa uscir del burro; E chi stringe il naso, ne fa uscir del sangue; Così ancora chi preme l’ira ne fa uscir contesa	33 For by churning the milk you produce butter, by wringing the nose you produce blood, and bywhipping up anger you produce strife.
