DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 E GIOBBE rispose e disse:	1 Job spoke next. He said:
2 Veramente io so ch’egli è così; E come si giustificherebbe l’uomo appo Iddio?	2 Indeed, I know it is as you say: how could anyone claim to be upright before God?
3 Se Iddio vuol litigar con lui, Egli non gli potrà rispondere d’infra mille articoli ad un solo.	3 Anyone trying to argue matters with him, could not give him one answer in a thousand.
4 Egli è savio di cuore, e potente di forza; Chi si è mai indurato contro a lui, ed è prosperato?	4 Among the wisest and the hardiest, who then can successful y defy him?
5 Contro a lui, che spianta i monti, Senza che si possa sapere come egli li abbia rivolti sottosopra nella sua ira;	5 He moves the mountains, though they do not know it; he throws them down when he is angry.
6 Che crolla la terra, e la smuove dal luogo suo; E da cui le colonne di essa sono scosse;	6 He shakes the earth, and moves it from its place, making al its pil ars tremble.
7 Che parla al sole, ed esso non si leva; Che tiene suggellate le stelle;	7 The sun, at his command, forbears to rise, and on the stars he sets a seal.

21 Benchè io sia intiero, io non riconoscerò me stesso; Io avrò a sdegno la vita mia	21 But am I innocent? I am no longer sure, and life itself I despise!
22 Egli è tutt’uno; perciò ho detto: Egli distrugge ugualmente l’uomo intiero e l’empio.	22 It is al one, and hence I boldly say: he destroys innocent and guilty alike.
23 Se è un flagello, egli uccide in un momento; Ma egli si beffa della prova degl’innocenti.	23 When a sudden deadly scourge descends, he laughs at the plight of the innocent.
24 La terra è data in mano all’empio, Il qual copre la faccia de’ giudici di essa. Ora, se Iddio non fa questo, chi è egli dunque?	24 When a country falls into the power of the wicked, he veils the faces of its judges. Or if not he, whoelse?
25 Ma i miei giorni sono stati più leggieri che un corriero; Son fuggiti via, non hanno goduto il bene;	25 My days pass: more swiftly than a runner they flee away with never a glimpse of happiness,
26 Son trascorsi come saette, Come un’aquila che vola frettolosa al pasto.	26 they skim past like a reed canoe, like an eagle swooping on its prey.
27 Se io dico: Io dimenticherò il mio lamento, Io lascerò il mio cruccio, e mi rinforzerò;	27 If I decide to stifle my complaining, change countenance, and wear a smiling face,
28 Io sono spaventato di tutti i miei tormenti, Io so che tu non mi reputerai innocente.	28 fear seizes me at the thought of al my woes, for I know you do not regard me as innocent.
29 Io sarò reo; Perchè adunque mi affaticherei in vano?	29 And if I have done wrong, why should I put myself to useless trouble?
30 Quando io mi fossi lavato con acque di neve, E nettatomi le mani col sapone;	30 If I wash myself in melted snow, clean my hands with soda,
31 Allora pure tu mi tufferesti in una fossa, E i miei vestimenti mi avrebbero in abbominio.	31 you wil only plunge me into the dung, til my clothes themselves recoil from me!
32 Perciocchè egli non è un uomo, come son io, perchè io gli risponda, E perchè noi veniamo insieme a giudicio.	32 For he is not human like me: impossible for me to answer him or appear alongside him in court.
33 Ei non v’è niuno che possa dar sentenza fra noi, Che possa metter la mano sopra amendue noi.	33 There is no arbiter between us, to lay his hand on both,
34 Ma rimuova egli pur la sua verga d’addosso a me, E non mi conturbi il suo spavento.	34 to stay his rod from me, or keep away his daunting terrors.
35 Allora io parlerò, e non avrò paura di lui; Perciocchè in questo stato io non sono in me stesso	35 Nonetheless, unafraid of him, I shal speak: since I do not see myself like that at al !
