2 Who will grant to me that I might be as I was in former months, according to the days when God kept watch over me?	2 «Oh! se io potessi tornare come ai mesi di prima, come ai giorni in cui Dio mi custodiva!
3 At that time, his lamp shined over my head, and by his light, I walked through the darkness.	3 Allorchè splendeva la sua lucerna sul mio capo, e alla sua luce camminavo fra le tenebre!
4 I was then just as in the days of my youth, when God was privately in my tabernacle.	4 Com'ero ai giorni di mia giovinezza, allorchè Dio segretamente stava nella mia tenda;
5 At that time, the Almighty was with me and my children surrounded me.	5 quando l'Onnipotente era meco, e attorno a me stavano i miei ragazzi;
6 Then, I washed my feet with butter, and a boulder poured out rivers of oil for me.	6 quando i miei piedi guazzavano nella pannae dal sasso scaturivano per me ruscelli d'olio;
7 When I went to the gate of the city, or to the main street, they prepared a chair for me.	7 quando, incamminandomi verso la porta della città, mi preparavano il seggio sulla piazza!
8 The youths saw me and hid themselves, and the elders, rising up, remained standing.	8 Vedendomi, i giovani si nascondevano, i vecchi s'alzavano e rimanevano in piedi;
9 The leaders stopped talking, and they placed a finder over their mouth.	9 i maggiorenti cessavano di parlare, mettendosi il dito sulla bocca:
10 The commanders subdued their voice, and their tongue adhered to their throat.	10 i nobili ritenevano la lor voce, e la lor lingua s'attaccava al palato.
11 The ear that heard me, blessed me, and the eye that saw me, gave testimony for me.	11 L'orecchio che udiva mi proclamava beato, e l'occhio che vedeva mi testimoniava [la lode];
12 This was because I had freed the poor, who cried out, and the orphan, who had no helper.	12 giacchè io liberavo il povero che gridava [al soccorso], e l'orfano che non aveva difensore:
13 The blessing of him who would have been destroyed came upon me, and I consoled the heart of the widow.	13 la benedizione del pericolante veniva su di me, e al cuor della vedova porgevo io conforto;
14 I put on justice, and I clothed myself with my judgment, like a robe and a diadem.	14 di giustizia io m'ammantavo, e mi rivestivocome di manto e diadema del mio diritto.
15 I was an eye for the blind and a foot for the lame.	15 L'occhio io fui per il cieco, e il piede fui per lo storpio;
16 I was the father of the poor; and if I lacked knowledge about any case, I investigated very diligently.	16 dei poveri ero io il padre, e la difesa di chi m'era ignoto io m'assumevo con zelo;
17 I crushed the jaws of the impious, and I took away prey from his teeth.	17 spezzavo io le zanne del malvagio, e da' suoi denti cacciavo fuori la preda.
18 And I said, “I will die in my little nest, and like a palm tree, I will multiply my days.	18 E dicevo: - Nel mio niduccio io morirò, e come la palma moltiplicherò i miei giorni;
19 My root has been spread beside the waters, and the dew will remain with my harvest.	19 La mia radice s'espande verso l'acque , e la rugiada dimora sui miei rami;
20 My glory will always be restored, and my bow will be restored to my hand.”	20 la mia gloria sempre si rinnova, e l'arco mio in mia mano ringiovanisce! -
21 Those who heard me, expected vindication, and they listened closely in silence to my counsel.	21 Coloro che mi ascoltavano aspettavano la decisione, e tacevano intenti al mio consiglio;
22 To my words, they dared to add nothing, and my eloquence poured over them.	22 dopo le mie parole non ardivano replicare, e su di essi cadeva a stille il mio discorso:
23 They waited for me as for rain, and they opened their mouth as for belated rains.	23 aspettavano me come la pioggia, aprendo la loro bocca come [terreno] a pioggia tardiva.
24 If I had ever laughed at them, they would not have believed it, and the light of my face was not cast down towards the ground.	24 Se talvolta io sorridevo loro, ad essi non pareva vero, e lo splendore del mio volto non cadeva invano.
25 If I wished to go to them, I sat down first, and, though I sat like a king surrounded by an army, yet I was a comforter to whose who mourned.	25 Quando gradivo andare da loro, mi assidevo per primo: e pur sedendo qual re in mezzo alle schiere, ero tuttavia consolatore degli afflitti.
