1 Mon fils, retiens mes paroles, garde précieusement mes conseils.	1 My son, guard my words and conceal my precepts within you.
2 Observe mes commandements et tu vivras, garde mon enseignement comme la prunelle de tes yeux.	2 Son, preserve my commandments, and you shall live. And keep my law as the pupil of your eye.
3 Serre-les fermement entre tes doigts, inscris-les sur les tablettes de ton cœur!	3 Bind it with your fingers; write it on the tablets of your heart.
4 Dis à la sagesse: “Sois ma sœur”, et à l’intelligence: “Sois mon amie”.	4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call prudence your friend.
5 Alors tu sauras te garder de la femme d’un autre, de la belle inconnue aux douces paroles.	5 So may she guard you from the woman who is an outsider, and from the stranger who sweetens her words.
6 De la fenêtre de ma maison je regardais à travers le grillage,	6 For I gaze from the window of my house, through the lattice,
7 et je vis passer un naïf, un de ces jeunes qui ne pensent à rien.	7 and I see little ones. I consider a frenzied youth,
8 Il s’engageait dans la ruelle, près du coin où vit cette femme, il se dirigeait vers sa maison.	8 who crosses the street at the corner and close to the way of that house.
9 C’était le soir, à la tombée du jour, déjà c’était la nuit et l’obscurité.	9 He steps into shadows, as day becomes evening, into the darkness and gloom of the night.
10 Et voici qu’elle vient à sa rencontre, vêtue comme une prostituée et couverte d’un voile.	10 And behold, a woman meets him, dressed like a harlot, prepared to captivate souls: chattering and rambling,
11 C’est la femme effrontée, qui n’a plus de honte, qui ne tient plus en place dans sa maison.	11 unwilling to bear silence, unable to keep her feet at home,
12 Tantôt dans la rue, tantôt sur les places, de tous côtés elle cherche l’aventure.	12 now outside, now in the streets, now lying in ambush near the corners.
13 Elle se jette sur ce jeune homme et l’embrasse; elle lui dit d’un ton assuré:	13 And overtaking the youth, she kisses him, and with a provocative face, she flatters him, saying:
14 “Il me fallait offrir un sacrifice, aujourd’hui même je devais m’acquitter d’un vœu.	14 “I vowed sacrifices for well-being. Today I have repaid my vows.
15 Je suis donc sortie à ta recherche pour que tu sois au repas et je t’ai trouvé.	15 Because of this, I have gone out to meet you, desiring to see you, and I have found you.
16 J’ai garni mon divan de couvertures, de fine toile d’Égypte.	16 I have woven my bed with cords. I have strewn it with embroidered tapestries from Egypt.
17 J’ai parfumé mon lit avec de la myrrhe, de l’aloès et de la marjolaine.	17 I have sprinkled my bed with myrrh, aloe, and cinnamon.
18 Viens, prenons notre plaisir, enivrons-nous d’amour jusqu’au matin!	18 Come, let us be inebriated in abundance, and let us delight in the embraces of desire, until the day begins to dawn.
19 Mon mari n’est pas à la maison, il est en voyage loin d’ici;	19 For my husband is not in his house. He has gone away on a very long journey.
20 il a pris l’argent avec lui et ne reviendra à la maison qu’à la pleine lune.”	20 He took with him a bag of money. He will return to his house on the day of the full moon.”
21 À force d’habileté elle réussit à le convaincre, elle le séduit et l’entraîne.	21 She enmeshed him with many words, and she drew him forward with the flattery of her lips.
22 Il la suit aussitôt, comme un bœuf qu’on mène à l’abattoir, comme un cerf pris au nœud coulant,	22 Immediately, he follows her, like an ox being led to the sacrifice, and like a lamb acting lasciviously, and not knowing that he is being drawn foolishly into chains,
23 à qui bientôt une flèche percera le foie. Il est comme l’oiseau qui se jette dans le filet, sans savoir qu’il y va de sa vie!	23 until the arrow pierces his liver. It is just as if a bird were to hurry into the snare. And he does not know that his actions endanger his own soul.
24 Donc vous, mes fils, écoutez-moi; retenez bien cette consigne:	24 Therefore, my son, hear me now, and attend to the words of my mouth.
25 ne te laisse pas séduire par une de ces femmes, ne te laisse pas égarer par ses manœuvres.	25 Do not let your mind be pulled into her ways. And do not be deceived by her paths.
26 Car elle a déjà fait beaucoup de victimes, et les plus forts y sont tombés.	26 For she has tossed aside many wounded, and some of those who were very strong have been slain by her.
27 De sa maison on passe chez les morts, c’est un chemin qui s’enfonce vers le monde des morts.	27 Her household is the way to Hell, reaching even to the inner places of death.
