BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 E tutte queste cose disputai io (e questionai) nel mio cuore, acciò che chiaramente io le sapessi, (e tutto integramente per propria ragione e veritade). Sono savie e giuste le tue opere, e sono in mano di Dio; e con tutto ciò non sa l'uomo, se è degno di amore ovvero di odio.	1 Yes, I have applied myself to all this and experienced all this to be so: that is to say, that the upright andthe wise, with their activities, are in the hands of God. We do not understand either love or hate, where we areconcerned, both of them are
2 Ma tutte le cose si riserba Iddio celatamente infino all' ultimo; onde veggiamo che ogni cosa viene mescolatamente al giusto e allo stolto, e al buono uomo e al reo, è al santo e al peccatore, e a chi fa sacrificio e a chi il biasima; e così diviene infermo il buono (come il cattivo, il giusto) come il peccatore, così il veritiero come colui che è mentitore.	2 futile. And for all of us is reserved a common fate, for the upright and for the wicked, for the good andfor the bad; whether we are ritually pure or not, whether we offer sacrifice or not: it is the same for the good andfor the sinner, for someone who takes a vow, as for someone who fears to do so.
3 E questa si è la peggiore cosa che intervegna sotto il sole, però che ogni cosa, bene e male, vegna ugualmente; per la quale cosa li cuori degli uomini (si turbano molto e) riempionsi di malizia, e hanno a vile (e tengono) il tempo di fare bene, e quasi inanzi che s' avveggano, muoiono e vanno allo inferno.	3 This is another evil among those occurring under the sun: that there should be the same fate foreveryone. The human heart, however, is ful of wickedness; fol y lurks in our hearts throughout our lives, until weend among the dead.
4 E veggono bene che niuno è il quale sempre viva, e pure quello cotanto che qui deve vivere, non sa, e non ha credenza quale sia; meglio è il cane vivo, che il lione morto.	4 But there is hope for someone stil linked to the rest of the living: better be a live dog than a dead lion.
5 (E questa è la cagione, che) quando è vivo J'uomo (puote fare bene, e) sa bene ch' elli dee morire; ma coloro che sono morti (hanno trapassato il tempo del meritare, e) non sanno niuna cosa dond' elli si possano aiutare, e non hanno più mercede; e la loro condizione sì è fatta come fossa dimenticata.	5 The living are at least aware that they are going to die, but the dead know nothing whatever. No morewages for them, since their memory is forgotten.
6 E amore e odio e invidia insieme passarono; e (non v' hanno luogo) in questo secolo non hanno parte, nè delle cose che sono sotto il sole.	6 Their love, their hate, their jealousy, have perished long since, and they wil never have any further partin what goes on under the sun.
7 Or va dunque, e manuca con letizia il tuo pane, e il tuo vino bèi in allegrezza, se a Dio piaceranno l'opere tue.	7 So, eat your bread in joy, drink your wine with a glad heart, since God has already approved youractions.
8 D' ogni tempo siano bianchi li tuoi vestimenti, e l'olio non venga meno (e non scemi) del tuo capo.	8 At al times, dress in white and keep your head wel scented.
9 Usa adunque il matrimonio con mogliata, la quale tu ami, per tutto il tempo della tua vita del tuo mutamento, il quale tempo ti fia dato sotto il sole, tutto il tempo della tua vanitade. Questa è la parte, nella vita tua, della fatica del sudore tuo sotto il sole.	9 Spend your life with the woman you love, all the days of futile life God gives you under the sun,throughout your futile days, since this is your lot in life and in the effort you expend under the sun.
10 Tieni mente che ciò che le mani tue possono fare (che sia bene), fallo incontenente; imperò che là dove tu vai, non vi vale senno nè ragione nè forza nè iscienza, cio è nello inferno.	10 Whatever work you find to do, do it with al your might, for there is neither achievement, nor planning,nor science, nor wisdom in Sheol where you are going.
11 Anche mi volsi in altra parte, e vidi sotto il sole, che nè spigliato corriere ha tosto corso, nè uomini forti hanno vittoria, nè li savi hanno assai possessioni, nè li maestri sì sanno procacciare, nè artefici piacciono per loro grazia; ma ciò che fanno, per la loro avventura (o vero grazia) fanno, (se Iddio non lo dà loro per grazia).	11 Another thing I have observed under the sun: that the race is not won by the speediest, nor the battleby the champions; it is not the wise who get food, nor the intel igent wealth, nor the learned favour: chance andmischance befall them all.
12 Non sa l'uomo', a che s' abbia a venire lo stato suo; però che così si pigliano gli uomini, disavventuratamente per tribulazione di tempo o d'altro, come si pigliano li pesci all' amo, e li uccelli al lacciuolo.	12 We do not know when our time will come: like fish caught in the treacherous net, like birds caught inthe snare, just so are we al trapped by misfortune when it suddenly overtakes us.
13 Questa altra sapienza vidi sotto il sole, e provai che era assai grande.	13 Here is another example of the wisdom I have acquired under the sun and it strikes me as important:
14 Piccola cittade, e pochi uomini vi sono dentro; e vennevi ad assedio uno grande re, e cerchiolla dintorno, e assediolla.	14 There was once a smal town, with only a few inhabitants; a mighty king made war on it, laying siege toit and building great siege-works round it.
15 E trovasi uno povero uomo, il quale si è savio, che la difende per sua. sapienza; e perchè egli è povero (nullo gliene sa grado, e) niuno si ricorda poi di lui. (Or dunque se egli fosse ricco tutti gliene renderebbono onore).	15 But there was in that town a poverty-stricken sage who by his wisdom saved the town. No oneremembered this poor man afterwards.
16 E io dico che migliore è la sapienza, che la fortezza; dunque come la sapienza del povero è avuta (in disdegno e) in dispregio, e le parole del savio non sono ascoltate?	16 So I say: Wisdom is more effective than brute force, but the wisdom of a poor man is not valued: noone listens to what he has to say.
17 Parole de' savii devono essere ascoltate chetamente, più che le parole del principe stolto.	17 The calm words of the wise make themselves heard above the shouts of someone commanding anarmy of fools.
18 Migliore è la sapienza, che l'arme di battaglia; e chi pecca in uno, perde molte buone cose.	18 Wisdom is worth more than weapons of war, but a single sin undoes a deal of good.
