Prima lettera a Timoteo 5

1 Un uomo anziano non lo riprendere duramente, ma esortalo come fosse tuo padre; i giovani, poi, come fossero tuoi fratelli,	1 You should not rebuke an old man, but rather plead with him, as if he were your father; with young men, like brothers;
2 le donne anziane come madri, le giovani come sorelle, in tutta castità.	2 with old women, like mothers; with young women, in all chastity, like sisters.
3 Onora le vedove che sono veramente vedove.	3 Honor those widows who are true widows.
4 Se però qualche vedova ha dei figli o nipoti, costoro imparino prima ad esercitare la pietà verso la propria famiglia e a rendere il contraccambio ai loro genitori, poiché questo è gradito davanti a Dio.	4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let her first learn to manage her own household, and to fulfill, in turn, her own obligation to her parents; for this is acceptable before God.
5 Quella, però, che è veramente vedova ed è rimasta sola, dimostra di aver riposto in Dio la sua speranza e attende con perseveranza alle suppliche e alle orazioni, notte e giorno.	5 But she who is truly a widow and is destitute, let her hope in God, and let her be urgent in supplications and prayers, night and day.
6 Al contrario, la vedova che si abbandona ai piaceri, anche se viva è già morta.	6 For she who is living in pleasures is dead, while living.
7 Questo pure tu richiamerai loro: che siano irreprensibili.	7 And give instruction in this, so that they may be beyond reproach.
8 Se poi qualcuno non ha cura dei suoi, soprattutto di quelli di casa, ha rinnegato la fede ed è peggiore di un infedele.	8 But if anyone has no concern for his own, and especially for those of his own household, he has denied the faith, and he is worse than an unbeliever.
9 Una vedova sia scritta nel catalogo (delle vedove), a condizione che non sia inferiore ai sessant'anni, sia stata moglie di un solo marito,	9 Let a widow be chosen who is no less than sixty years of age, who was the wife of one husband,
10 abbia in suo favore la testimonianza delle buone opere: se educò i figli, se praticò l'ospitalità, se lavò i piedi dei santi, se venne in soccorso ai tribolati, se si dedicò ad ogni opera buona.	10 who has testimony of her good works: whether she has educated children, or has provided hospitality, or has washed the feet of the saints, or has ministered to those suffering tribulation, or has pursued any kind of good work.
11 Non accettare invece le vedove più giovani, poiché, non appena vengono prese da brame indegne di Cristo, esse vogliono risposarsi,	11 But avoid the younger widows. For once they have flourished in Christ, they will want to marry,
12 attirandosi addosso un giudizio di condanna per aver rinnegato il loro impegno iniziale.	12 resulting in damnation, because they have disregarded the primacy of faith.
13 Oltre a ciò, essendo anche oziose, imparano ad andare in giro per le case; e non soltanto sono oziose, ma anche ciarliere e curiose, parlando di ciò che non conviene.	13 And being at the same time also idle, they learn to go from house to house, being not only idle, but also talkative and curious, speaking of things which do not concern them.
14 Perciò voglio che le più giovani si sposino, abbiano figli, governino la loro casa e non diano all'avversario nessuna occasione di biasimo.	14 Therefore, I want the younger women to marry, to procreate children, to be mothers of families, to provide no ready opportunity for the adversary to speak evil.
15 Alcune infatti si sono già fuorviate dietro a Satana.	15 For certain ones have already been turned back to Satan.
16 Se qualche donna fedele ha con sé delle vedove, provveda al loro sostentamento e non si aggravi la chiesa, affinché essa possa provvedere a quelle che sono veramente vedove.	16 If any among the faithful have widows, let him minister to them and not burden the Church, so that there may be enough for those who are true widows.
17 I presbiteri che presiedono bene siano stimati degni di doppio onore, soprattutto quelli che si affaticano nella parola e nell'insegnamento.	17 Let priests who lead well be held worthy of twice the honor, especially those who labor in the Word and in doctrine.
18 Dice infatti la Scrittura: Non metterai la museruola al bue che trebbia. Ed ancora: E' degno l'operaio della sua mercede.	18 For Scripture says: “You shall not muzzle an ox as it is treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of his pay.”
19 Non ricevere accuse contro un presbitero, eccetto che su deposizione di due o tre testimoni.	19 Do not be willing to accept an accusation against a priest, except under two or three witnesses.
20 Quelli poi che avessero peccato, riprendili davanti a tutti, affinché anche i rimanenti ne abbiano timore.	20 Reprove sinners in the sight of everyone, so that the others may have fear.
21 Ti scongiuro davanti a Dio e a Cristo Gesù e davanti agli angeli eletti di osservare queste cose senza prevenzione, nulla facendo per favoritismo.	21 I testify before God and Christ Jesus and the elect Angels, that you should observe these things without prejudgment, doing nothing which shows favoritism to either side.
22 Non imporre a nessuno le mani troppo affrettatamente, per non renderti partecipe degli altrui peccati. Consèrvati puro.	22 You should not be quick to impose hands on anyone, nor should you take part in the sins of outsiders. Keep yourself chaste.
23 Non continuare a bere acqua soltanto, ma fa' moderato uso di vino a causa dello stomaco e delle tue frequenti malattie.	23 Do not continue to drink only water, but make use of a little wine, for the sake of your stomach and your frequent infirmities.
24 I peccati di alcuni uomini sono manifesti e li precedono in giudizio; ad altri invece vengono dietro.	24 The sins of some men have been made manifest, preceding them to judgment, but those of others are manifested later.
25 Alla stessa maniera, anche le opere buone sono manifeste, e quelle che non lo sono non possono rimanere nascoste.	25 Similarly, too, good deeds have been made manifest, but even when they are not, they cannot remain hidden.
