1 In principio era il Verbo e il Verbo era presso Dio e Dio era il Verbo.	1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 Questi era in principio presso Dio.	2 He was in the beginning with God;
3 Tutto per mezzo di lui fu fatto e senza di lui non fu fatto nulla di ciò che è stato fatto.	3 all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.
4 In lui era la vita e la vita era la luce degli uomini;	4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 e la luce nelle tenebre brilla e le tenebre non la compresero.	5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 Ci fu un uomo mandato da Dio; il suo nome era Giovanni.	6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 Questi venne come testimone per rendere testimonianza alla luce, affinché tutti credessero per mezzo di lui.	7 He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him.
8 Non era lui la luce, ma per rendere testimonianza alla luce.	8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light.
9 Era la luce vera, che illumina ogni uomo, quella che veniva nel mondo.	9 The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world.
10 Era nel mondo e il mondo fu fatto per mezzo di lui e il mondo non lo riconobbe.	10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not.
11 Venne nella sua proprietà e i suoi non lo accolsero.	11 He came to his own home, and his own people received him not.
12 A quanti però lo accolsero diede il potere di divenire figli di Dio, a coloro che credono nel suo nome,	12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God;
13 i quali non da sangue né da volontà di carne né da volontà di uomo ma da Dio furono generati.	13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 E il Verbo si fece carne e dimorò fra noi e abbiamo visto la sua gloria, gloria come di Unigenito dal Padre, pieno di grazia e di verità.	14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.
15 Giovanni rende testimonianza a lui e proclama: "Questi era colui di cui dissi: "Colui che viene dopo di me ebbe la precedenza davanti a me, perché era prima di me".	15 (John bore witness to him, and cried, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was before me.'")
16 Della sua pienezza infatti noi tutti ricevemmo e grazia su grazia;	16 And from his fulness have we all received, grace upon grace.
17 poiché la legge fu data per mezzo di Mosè, la grazia e la verità divennero realtà per mezzo di Gesù Cristo.	17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

20 E professò, e non negò, e professò: "Io non sono il Cristo".	20 He confessed, he did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ."
21 Gli domandarono: "Chi sei tu allora? Sei Elia?". Egli dice: "Non lo sono". "Sei il profeta?". Rispose: "No!".	21 And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" And he answered, "No."
22 Gli dissero allora: "Chi sei? Ché possiamo dare una risposta a chi ci ha inviati! Cosa dici di te stesso?".	22 They said to him then, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
23 Affermò: "Io sono voce di uno che grida nel deserto: raddrizzate la via del Signore, come disse il profeta Isaia".	23 He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said."
24 Essi erano stati mandati dai farisei.	24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.
25 Costoro gli domandarono ancora: "Perché dunque battezzi se non sei il Cristo né Elia né il profeta?".	25 They asked him, "Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?"
26 Rispose loro Giovanni: "Io battezzo con acqua; in mezzo a voi sta colui che voi non conoscete,	26 John answered them, "I baptize with water; but among you stands one whom you do not know,
27 colui che viene dopo di me, di cui non sono degno di sciogliere il legaccio del sandalo".	27 even he who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie."
28 Questi fatti avvennero a Betània al di là del Giordano, dove c'era Giovanni che battezzava.	28 This took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 L'indomani vede Gesù venirgli incontro e dice: "Ecco l'agnello di Dio che toglie il peccato del mondo.	29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30 Questi è colui di cui ho detto: "Colui che viene dopo di me ebbe la precedenza davanti a me, perché era prima di me".	30 This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks before me, for he was before me.'
31 Io non lo conoscevo, ma proprio perché fosse rivelato a Israele sono venuto a battezzare con acqua".	31 I myself did not know him; but for this I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel."
32 Poi Giovanni testimoniò: "Ho visto lo Spirito scendere dal cielo come una colomba, e si fermò sopra di lui.	32 And John bore witness, "I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven, and it remained on him.
33 Io non lo conoscevo, ma colui che mi mandò a battezzare con acqua mi disse: "Colui sul quale vedrai scendere lo Spirito e fermarsi su di lui, è lui che battezza con lo Spirito Santo".	33 I myself did not know him; but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
34 E io l'ho visto e ho testimoniato che lui è il Figlio di Dio".	34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God."
35 L'indomani, Giovanni si trovava ancora là con due dei suoi discepoli.	35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples;
36 Fissando lo sguardo su Gesù che passava, egli dice: "Ecco l'agnello di Dio".	36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"
37 I due discepoli lo sentirono parlare così e seguirono Gesù.	37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.
38 Gesù, voltosi e visti i due discepoli che lo stavano seguendo, dice loro: "Che cercate?". Gli dissero: "Rabbì (che, tradotto, significa "maestro"), dove stai?".	38 Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, "What do you seek?" And they said to him, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?"
39 "Venite e vedrete", dice loro. Andarono e videro dove stava e quel giorno stettero presso di lui. Era circa l'ora decima.	39 He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying; and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.
40 Andrea, fratello di Simone Pietro, era uno di quei due che avevano ascoltato Giovanni e avevano seguito Gesù.	40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
41 Egli trova anzitutto suo fratello Simone e gli dice: "Abbiamo trovato il Messia" (che, tradotto, significa "Cristo").	41 He first found his brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which means Christ).
42 Lo condusse a Gesù. Fissando lo sguardo su di lui, Gesù disse: "Tu sei Simone, figlio di Giovanni. Ti chiamerai Cefa" (che si traduce "Pietro").	42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, "So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas" (which means Peter ).
43 L'indomani decise di partire per la Galilea e trova Filippo. Gesù gli dice: "Séguimi!".	43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, "Follow me."
44 Filippo era di Betsàida, la città di Andrea e di Pietro.	44 Now Philip was from Beth-saida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
45 Filippo trova Natanaele e gli dice: "Quello di cui hanno scritto Mosè nella legge ed i profeti, noi l'abbiamo trovato: Gesù, figlio di Giuseppe, da Nazaret".	45 Philip found Nathana-el, and said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
46 "Da Nazaret -- gli disse Natanaele -- può venire qualcosa di buono?". Gli dice Filippo: "Vieni e vedi!".	46 Nathana-el said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."
47 Gesù vide Natanaele venirgli incontro e dice di lui: "Ecco un autentico israelita, in cui non c'è falsità".	47 Jesus saw Nathana-el coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!"
48 Gli dice Natanaele: "Donde mi conosci?". Gli rispose Gesù: "Prima che Filippo ti chiamasse, ti ho visto sotto il fico".	48 Nathana-el said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."
49 Gli rispose Natanaele: "Rabbì, tu sei il Figlio di Dio, tu sei il re d'Israele".	49 Nathana-el answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"
50 Gli rispose Gesù: "Perché ti ho detto che ti ho visto sotto il fico credi? Vedrai cose ben più grandi!".	50 Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these."
51 Poi soggiunse: "In verità, in verità vi dico: vedrete il cielo aperto e gli angeli di Dio salire e discendere sul Figlio dell'uomo".	51 And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man."
