| 1 Chi è come il sapiente? Chi conosce l'interpretazione delle cose? La sapienza dell'uomo illumina il suo volto mentre l'ira lo sfigura. | 1 Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man's wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his countenance is changed. |
| 2 Obbedisci alla parola del re, specialmente per il giuramento fatto a Dio. | 2 Keep the king's command, and because of your sacred oath be not dismayed; |
| 3 Non allontanarti in fretta dal suo cospetto. Non persistere in una opinione che a lui non piaccia, perché egli può fare tutto ciò che vuole. | 3 go from his presence, do not delay when the matter is unpleasant, for he does whatever he pleases. |
| 4 Infatti la parola del re è sovrana, e chi gli può chiedere: "Che cosa fai?". | 4 For the word of the king is supreme, and who may say to him, "What are you doing?" |
| 5 Ma chi sta agli ordini non incappa in alcun guaio. La mente del sapiente sa che c'è tempo e giudizio, | 5 He who obeys a command will meet no harm, and the mind of a wise man will know the time and way. |
| 6 perché per ogni cosa c'è tempo e giudizio per quanto un male gravi sull'uomo: | 6 For every matter has its time and way, although man's trouble lies heavy upon him. |
| 7 non si sa quale sarà il futuro. Chi può dire infatti come andranno le cose? | 7 For he does not know what is to be, for who can tell him how it will be? |
| 8 Nessuno è capace di dominare il suo spirito vitale: il giorno della morte è fuori del nostro dominio. Nella battaglia della vita nessuno scampa: nemmeno il male salva chi lo commette. | 8 No man has power to retain the spirit, or authority over the day of death; there is no discharge from war, nor will wickedness deliver those who are given to it. |
| 9 Tutto questo ho visto e ho riflettuto su ogni cosa che si fa sotto il sole, quando un uomo domina su un altro uomo per fargli del male. | 9 All this I observed while applying my mind to all that is done under the sun, while man lords it over man to his hurt. |
| 10 E così ho visto malvagi portati al sepolcro. Procedevano dal luogo santo sicuri di sé. Erano dimenticati nella città, in cui si comportavano così. Anche questo è vanità, | 10 Then I saw the wicked buried; they used to go in and out of the holy place, and were praised in the city where they had done such things. This also is vanity. |
| 11 perché non si fa subito giudizio dell'opera del malvagio. Così il cuore dell'uomo è pronto a fare il male, | 11 Because sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the sons of men is fully set to do evil. |
| 12 perché il peccatore fa il male cento volte e allunga la sua vita. Così ho capito anche questo, che avrà del bene chi teme Dio, proprio perché lo teme, | 12 Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him; |
| 13 e che non va bene al malvagio e non può allungare la sua vita come un'ombra, perché egli non teme Dio. | 13 but it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like a shadow, because he does not fear before God. |
| 14 E c'è ancora un'altra vanità che càpita sulla terra: ci sono giusti ai quali càpita secondo la condotta dei malvagi e ci sono malvagi ai quali càpita secondo la condotta dei giusti. Ho pensato che anche questo è vanità. | 14 There is a vanity which takes place on earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity. |
| 15 E allora ho esaltato l'allegria, perché per l'uomo non c'è altro bene sotto il sole, se non mangiare, bere e stare allegro. E' questa la sola cosa che gli faccia buona compagnia nella sua fatica, nei giorni contati di sua vita che Dio gli ha dato sotto il sole. | 15 And I commend enjoyment, for man has no good thing under the sun but to eat and drink, and enjoy himself, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of life which God gives him under the sun. |
| 16 E come mi son dato a riflettere sulla sapienza e a considerare il lavoro che si fa sulla terra, per cui l'uomo non vede riposo né di giorno né di notte, | 16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on earth, how neither day nor night one's eyes see sleep; |
| 17 ho considerato l'insieme dell'opera di Dio rendendomi conto che l'uomo non può arrivare a scoprire tutto quello che avviene sotto il sole, perché non trova niente, per quanto si affatichi a cercare. E anche se il sapiente dice di sapere, il sapiente non trova nulla. | 17 then I saw all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. However much man may toil in seeking, he will not find it out; even though a wise man claims to know, he cannot find it out. |
