A Canticle Psalm. On the day of the Sabbath. | 1 You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, |
It is good to confess to the Lord and to sing psalms to your name, O Most High: | 2 Say to the LORD, "My refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust." |
to announce your mercy in the morning, and your truth throughout the night, | 3 God will rescue you from the fowler's snare, from the destroying plague, |
upon the ten strings, upon the psaltery, with a canticle, upon stringed instruments. | 4 Will shelter you with pinions, spread wings that you may take refuge; God's faithfulness is a protecting shield. |
For you, O Lord, have delighted me with your doings, and I will exult in the works of your hands. | 5 You shall not fear the terror of the night nor the arrow that flies by day, |
How great are your works, O Lord! Your thoughts have been made exceedingly deep. | 6 Nor the pestilence that roams in darkness, nor the plague that ravages at noon. |
A foolish man will not know these things, and a senseless one will not understand: | 7 Though a thousand fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, near you it shall not come. |
when sinners will have risen up like grass, and when all those who work iniquity will have appeared, that they shall pass away, age after age. | 8 You need simply watch; the punishment of the wicked you will see. |
But you, O Lord, are the Most High for all eternity. | 9 You have the LORD for your refuge; you have made the Most High your stronghold. |
For behold your enemies, O Lord, for behold your enemies will perish, and all those who work iniquity will be dispersed. | 10 No evil shall befall you, no affliction come near your tent. |
And my horn will be exalted like that of the single-horned beast, and my old age will be exalted in fruitful mercy. | 11 For God commands the angels to guard you in all your ways. |
And my eye has looked down upon my enemies, and my ear will hear of the malignant rising up against me. | 12 With their hands they shall support you, lest you strike your foot against a stone. |
The just one will flourish like the palm tree. He will be multiplied like the cedar of Lebanon. | 13 You shall tread upon the asp and the viper, trample the lion and the dragon. |
Those planted in the house of the Lord will flourish in the courts of the house of our God. | 14 Whoever clings to me I will deliver; whoever knows my name I will set on high. |
They will still be multiplied in a fruitful old age, and they will endure well, | 15 All who call upon me I will answer; I will be with them in distress; I will deliver them and give them honor. |
so that they may announce that the Lord our God is righteous and that there is no iniquity in him. | 16 With length of days I will satisfy them and show them my saving power. |
