NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
1 A wise son loves correction, but the senseless one heeds no rebuke.1 Filius sapiens doctrina patris ;
qui autem illusor est non audit cum arguitur.
2 From the fruit of his words a man eats good things, but the treacherous one craves violence.2 De fructu oris sui homo satiabitur bonis :
anima autem prævaricatorum iniqua.
3 He who guards his mouth protects his life; to open wide one's lips brings downfall.3 Qui custodit os suum custodit animam suam ;
qui autem inconsideratus est ad loquendum, sentiet mala.
4 The soul of the sluggard craves in vain, but the diligent soul is amply satisfied.4 Vult et non vult piger ;
anima autem operantium impinguabitur.
5 Anything deceitful the just man hates, but the wicked brings shame and disgrace.5 Verbum mendax justus detestabitur ;
impius autem confundit, et confundetur.
6 Virtue guards one who walks honestly, but the downfall of the wicked is sin.6 Justitia custodit innocentis viam,
impietas autem peccatorem supplantat.
7 One man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.7 Est quasi dives, cum nihil habeat,
et est quasi pauper, cum in multis divitiis sit.
8 A man's riches serve as ransom for his life, but the poor man heeds no rebuke.8 Redemptio animæ viri divitiæ suæ ;
qui autem pauper est, increpationem non sustinet.
9 The light of the just shines gaily, but the lamp of the wicked goes out.9 Lux justorum lætificat :
lucerna autem impiorum extinguetur.
10 The stupid man sows discord by his insolence, but with those who take counsel is wisdom.10 Inter superbos semper jurgia sunt ;
qui autem agunt omnia cum consilio, reguntur sapientia.
11 Wealth quickly gotten dwindles away, but amassed little by little, it grows.11 Substantia festinata minuetur ;
quæ autem paulatim colligitur manu, multiplicabitur.
12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a wish fulfilled is a tree of life.12 Spes quæ differtur affligit animam ;
lignum vitæ desiderium veniens.
13 He who despises the word must pay for it, but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded.13 Qui detrahit alicui rei, ipse se in futurum obligat ;
qui autem timet præceptum, in pace versabitur.
Animæ dolosæ errant in peccatis :
justi autem misericordes sunt, et miserantur.
14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that a man may avoid the snares of death.14 Lex sapientis fons vitæ,
ut declinet a ruina mortis.
15 Good sense brings favor, but the way of the faithless is their ruin.15 Doctrina bona dabit gratiam ;
in itinere contemptorum vorago.
16 The shrewd man does everything with prudence, but the fool peddles folly.16 Astutus omnia agit cum consilio ;
qui autem fatuus est aperit stultitiam.
17 A wicked messenger brings on disaster, but a trustworthy envoy is a healing remedy.17 Nuntius impii cadet in malum ;
legatus autem fidelis, sanitas.
18 Poverty and shame befall the man who disregards correction, but he who heeds reproof is honored.18 Egestas et ignominia ei qui deserit disciplinam ;
qui autem acquiescit arguenti glorificabitur.
19 Lust indulged starves the soul, but fools hate to turn from evil.19 Desiderium si compleatur delectat animam ;
detestantur stulti eos qui fugiunt mala.
20 Walk with wise men and you will become wise, but the companion of fools will fare badly.20 Qui cum sapientibus graditur sapiens erit ;
amicus stultorum similis efficietur.
21 Misfortune pursues sinners, but the just shall be recompensed with good.21 Peccatores persequitur malum,
et justis retribuentur bona.
22 The good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the just.22 Bonus reliquit hæredes filios et nepotes,
et custoditur justo substantia peccatoris.
23 A lawsuit devours the tillage of the poor, but some men perish for lack of a law court.23 Multi cibi in novalibus patrum,
et aliis congregantur absque judicio.
24 He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him takes care to chastise him.24 Qui parcit virgæ odit filium suum ;
qui autem diligit illum instanter erudit.
25 When the just man eats, his hunger is appeased; but the belly of the wicked suffers want.25 Justus comedit et replet animam suam ;
venter autem impiorum insaturabilis.
