---|---|
A wise son loves correction, but the senseless one heeds no rebuke. | 1 A wise child listens to a father's discipline, a cynic wil not listen to reproof. |
From the fruit of his words a man eats good things, but the treacherous one craves violence. | 2 The fruit of the mouth provides a good meal, but the soul of the treacherous feeds on violence. |
He who guards his mouth protects his life; to open wide one's lips brings downfall. | 3 A guard on the mouth makes life secure, whoever talks too much is lost. |
The soul of the sluggard craves in vain, but the diligent soul is amply satisfied. | 4 The idler hungers but has no food; hard workers get their fill. |
Anything deceitful the just man hates, but the wicked brings shame and disgrace. | 5 The upright hates a lying word, but the wicked slanders and defames. |
Virtue guards one who walks honestly, but the downfall of the wicked is sin. | 6 Uprightness stands guard over one whose way is honest, sin causes the ruin of the wicked. |
One man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth. | 7 There are some who, on nothing, pretend to be rich, some, with great wealth, pretend to be poor. |
A man's riches serve as ransom for his life, but the poor man heeds no rebuke. | 8 The ransom for life is a person's wealth; but the poor wil not hear the reproof. |
The light of the just shines gaily, but the lamp of the wicked goes out. | 9 The light of the upright is joyful, the lamp of the wicked goes out. |
The stupid man sows discord by his insolence, but with those who take counsel is wisdom. | 10 Insolence breeds only disputes, wisdom lies with those who take advice. |
Wealth quickly gotten dwindles away, but amassed little by little, it grows. | 11 A sudden fortune wil dwindle away, accumulation little by little is the way to riches. |
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a wish fulfilled is a tree of life. | 12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, desire fulfil ed is a tree of life. |
He who despises the word must pay for it, but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded. | 13 Contempt for the word is self-destructive, respect for the commandment wins salvation. |
The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that a man may avoid the snares of death. | 14 The teaching of the wise is a life-giving fountain for eluding the snares of death. |
Good sense brings favor, but the way of the faithless is their ruin. | 15 Good sense wins favour, but the way of the treacherous is hard. |
The shrewd man does everything with prudence, but the fool peddles folly. | 16 Anyone of discretion acts by the light of knowledge, the fool parades his fol y. |
A wicked messenger brings on disaster, but a trustworthy envoy is a healing remedy. | 17 A bad messenger fal s into misfortune, a trusty messenger brings healing. |
Poverty and shame befall the man who disregards correction, but he who heeds reproof is honored. | 18 Whoever rejects discipline wins poverty and scorn; for anyone who accepts correction: honour. |
Lust indulged starves the soul, but fools hate to turn from evil. | 19 Desire fulfil ed is sweet to the soul; fools are loth to turn -- from evil. |
Walk with wise men and you will become wise, but the companion of fools will fare badly. | 20 Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, whoever mixes with fools wil be ruined. |
Misfortune pursues sinners, but the just shall be recompensed with good. | 21 Evil wil pursue the sinner, but good wil reward the upright. |
The good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the just. | 22 The good bequeaths a heritage to children's children, the wealth of the sinner is stored away for theupright. |
A lawsuit devours the tillage of the poor, but some men perish for lack of a law court. | 23 Though the farms of the poor yield much food, some perish for lack of justice. |
He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him takes care to chastise him. | 24 Whoever fails to use the stick hates his child; whoever is free with correction loves him. |
When the just man eats, his hunger is appeased; but the belly of the wicked suffers want. | 25 The upright eats to the full, the bel y of the wicked goes empty. |
