NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
1 A wise son loves correction, but the senseless one heeds no rebuke.1 Filius sapiens disciplina patris;
qui autem illusor est, non audit, cum arguitur.
2 From the fruit of his words a man eats good things, but the treacherous one craves violence.2 De fructu oris sui homo satiabitur bonis,
anima autem praevaricatorum violentia.
3 He who guards his mouth protects his life; to open wide one's lips brings downfall.3 Qui custodit os suum, custodit animam suam;
qui autem incautus est eloquio, ruina est ei.
4 The soul of the sluggard craves in vain, but the diligent soul is amply satisfied.4 Vult et non habet piger,
anima autem operantium impinguabitur.
5 Anything deceitful the just man hates, but the wicked brings shame and disgrace.5 Verbum mendax iustus detestabitur,
impius autem confundit et dehonestat.
6 Virtue guards one who walks honestly, but the downfall of the wicked is sin.6 Iustitia custodit innocentem in via,
impietas autem peccatorem supplantat.
7 One man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.7 Est qui quasi dives habetur, cum nihil habeat;
et est qui quasi pauper, cum in multis divitiis sit.
8 A man's riches serve as ransom for his life, but the poor man heeds no rebuke.8 Redemptio animae viri divitiae suae;
qui autem pauper est, increpationem non sustinet.
9 The light of the just shines gaily, but the lamp of the wicked goes out.9 Lux iustorum laetificat,
lucerna autem impiorum exstinguetur.
10 The stupid man sows discord by his insolence, but with those who take counsel is wisdom.10 Inter superbos tantum iurgia sunt,
et apud humiles sapientia.
11 Wealth quickly gotten dwindles away, but amassed little by little, it grows.11 Substantia festinata minuetur;
qui autem colligit manu, multiplicat.
12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a wish fulfilled is a tree of life.12 Spes, quae differtur, affligit animam,
lignum vitae desiderium veniens.
13 He who despises the word must pay for it, but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded.13 Qui contemnit verbum, ipse se obligat;
qui autem timet praeceptum, retribuetur ei.
14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that a man may avoid the snares of death.14 Lex sapientis fons vitae,
ut declinet a laqueis mortis.
15 Good sense brings favor, but the way of the faithless is their ruin.15 Intellegentia bona dabit gratiam,
in itinere infidelium vorago.
16 The shrewd man does everything with prudence, but the fool peddles folly.16 Omnis astutus agit cum consilio;
qui autem fatuus est, aperit stultitiam.
17 A wicked messenger brings on disaster, but a trustworthy envoy is a healing remedy.17 Nuntius impius cadet in malum,
legatus autem fidelis sanitas.
18 Poverty and shame befall the man who disregards correction, but he who heeds reproof is honored.18 Egestas et ignominia ei, qui deserit disciplinam;
qui autem acquiescit arguenti, glorificabitur.
19 Lust indulged starves the soul, but fools hate to turn from evil.19 Desiderium, si compleatur, delectat animam;
detestantur stulti fugere mala.
20 Walk with wise men and you will become wise, but the companion of fools will fare badly.20 Qui cum sapientibus graditur, sapiens erit;
amicus stultorum malus efficietur.
21 Misfortune pursues sinners, but the just shall be recompensed with good.21 Peccatores persequitur malum,
et iustis retribuentur bona.
22 The good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the just.22 Bonus relinquit heredes filios et nepotes;
et custoditur iusto substantia peccatoris.
23 A lawsuit devours the tillage of the poor, but some men perish for lack of a law court.23 Multi cibi in novalibus pauperum,
et est qui perit, deficiente iudicio.
24 He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him takes care to chastise him.24 Qui parcit virgae, odit filium suum;
qui autem diligit illum, instanter erudit.
25 When the just man eats, his hunger is appeased; but the belly of the wicked suffers want.25 Iustus comedit et replet animam suam,
venter autem impiorum insaturabilis.
