DOUAI-RHEIMSLXX
Then Sophar the Naamathite answered, and said:1 υπολαβων δε σωφαρ ο μιναιος λεγει
Therefore various thoughts succeed one another in me, and my mind is hurried away to different things.2 ουχ ουτως υπελαμβανον αντερειν σε ταυτα και ουχι συνιετε μαλλον η και εγω
The doctrine with which thou reprovest me, I will hear, and the spirit of my understanding shall answer for me.3 παιδειαν εντροπης μου ακουσομαι και πνευμα εκ της συνεσεως αποκρινεται μοι
This I know from the beginning, since man was placed upon the earth,4 μη ταυτα εγνως απο του ετι αφ' ου ετεθη ανθρωπος επι της γης
that the praise of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment.5 ευφροσυνη γαρ ασεβων πτωμα εξαισιον χαρμονη δε παρανομων απωλεια
If his pride mount up even to heaven, and his head touch the clouds:6 εαν αναβη εις ουρανον αυτου τα δωρα η δε θυσια αυτου νεφων αψηται
In the end he shall be destroyed like a dunghill, and they that has seen him shall say: Where is he?7 οταν γαρ δοκη ηδη κατεστηριχθαι τοτε εις τελος απολειται οι δε ιδοντες αυτον ερουσιν που εστιν
As a dream that fleeth away he shall not be found, he shall pass as a vision of the night:8 ωσπερ ενυπνιον εκπετασθεν ου μη ευρεθη επτη δε ωσπερ φασμα νυκτερινον
The eyes that had seen him, shall see him no more, neither shall his place any more behold him.9 οφθαλμος παρεβλεψεν και ου προσθησει και ουκετι προσνοησει αυτον ο τοπος αυτου
His children shall be oppressed with want, and his hands shall render him his sorrow.10 τους υιους αυτου ολεσαισαν ηττονες αι δε χειρες αυτου πυρσευσαισαν οδυνας
His bones shall be filled with the vices of his youth, and they shall sleep with him in the dust.11 οστα αυτου ενεπλησθησαν νεοτητος αυτου και μετ' αυτου επι χωματος κοιμηθησεται
For when evil shall be sweet in his mouth, he will hide it under his tongue.12 εαν γλυκανθη εν στοματι αυτου κακια κρυψει αυτην υπο την γλωσσαν αυτου
He will spare it, and not leave it, and will hide it in his throat.13 ου φεισεται αυτης και ουκ εγκαταλειψει αυτην και συνεξει αυτην εν μεσω του λαρυγγος αυτου
His bread in his belly shall be turned into the gall of asps within him.14 και ου μη δυνηθη βοηθησαι εαυτω χολη ασπιδος εν γαστρι αυτου
The riches which he hath swallowed; he shall vomit up, and God shall draw them out of his belly.15 πλουτος αδικως συναγομενος εξεμεσθησεται εξ οικιας αυτου εξελκυσει αυτον αγγελος
He shall suck the head of asps, and the viper's tongue shall kill him.16 θυμον δε δρακοντων θηλασειεν ανελοι δε αυτον γλωσσα οφεως
(Let him not see the streams of the river, the brooks of honey and of butter.)17 μη ιδοι αμελξιν νομαδων μηδε νομας μελιτος και βουτυρου
He shall be punished for all that he did, and yet shall not be consumed: according to the multitude of his devices so also shall he suffer.18 εις κενα και ματαια εκοπιασεν πλουτον εξ ου ου γευσεται ωσπερ στριφνος αμασητος ακαταποτος
Because he broke in and stripped the poor: he hath violently taken away a house which he did not build.19 πολλων γαρ αδυνατων οικους εθλασεν διαιταν δε ηρπασεν και ουκ εστησεν
And yet his belly was not filled: and when he hath the things he coveted, he shall not be able to possess them.20 ουκ εστιν αυτου σωτηρια τοις υπαρχουσιν εν επιθυμια αυτου ου σωθησεται
There was nothing left of his meat, and therefore nothing shall continue of his goods:21 ουκ εστιν υπολειμμα τοις βρωμασιν αυτου δια τουτο ουκ ανθησει αυτου τα αγαθα
When he shall be filled, he shall be straitened, he shall burn, and every sorrow shall fall upon him.22 οταν δε δοκη ηδη πεπληρωσθαι θλιβησεται πασα δε αναγκη επ' αυτον επελευσεται
May his belly be filled, that God may send forth the wrath of his indignation upon him, and rain down his war upon him.23 ει πως πληρωσαι γαστερα αυτου επαποστειλαι επ' αυτον θυμον οργης νιψαι επ' αυτον οδυνας
He shall flee from weapons of iron, and shall fall upon a bow of brass.24 και ου μη σωθη εκ χειρος σιδηρου τρωσαι αυτον τοξον χαλκειον
The sword is drawn out, and cometh forth from its scabbard, and glittereth in his bitterness: the terrible ones shall go and come upon him.25 διεξελθοι δε δια σωματος αυτου βελος αστραπαι δε εν διαιταις αυτου περιπατησαισαν επ' αυτω φοβοι
All darkness is hid in his secret places: a fire that is not kindled shall devour him, he shall be afflicted when left in his tabernacle.26 παν δε σκοτος αυτω υπομειναι κατεδεται αυτον πυρ ακαυστον κακωσαι δε αυτου επηλυτος τον οικον
The heavens shall reveal his iniquity, and the earth shall rise up against him.27 ανακαλυψαι δε αυτου ο ουρανος τας ανομιας γη δε επανασταιη αυτω
The offspring of his house shall be exposed, he shall be pulled down in the day of God's wrath.28 ελκυσαι τον οικον αυτου απωλεια εις τελος ημερα οργης επελθοι αυτω
This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the inheritance of his doings from the Lord.29 αυτη η μερις ανθρωπου ασεβους παρα κυριου και κτημα υπαρχοντων αυτω παρα του επισκοπου
