Then Sophar the Naamathite answered, and said:1 Sofar de Naamat tomó la palabra y dijo:
Therefore various thoughts succeed one another in me, and my mind is hurried away to different things.2 Por esto mis pensamientos a replicar me incitan: por la impaciencia que me urge.
The doctrine with which thou reprovest me, I will hear, and the spirit of my understanding shall answer for me.3 Una lección que me ultraja he escuchado, mas el soplo de mi inteligencia me incita a responder.
This I know from the beginning, since man was placed upon the earth,4 ¿No sabes tú que desde siempre, desde que el hombre en la tierra fue puesto,
that the praise of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment.5 es breve la alegría del malvado, y de un instante el gozo del impío?
If his pride mount up even to heaven, and his head touch the clouds:6 Aunque su talla se alzara hasta los cielos y las nubes tocara su cabeza,
In the end he shall be destroyed like a dunghill, and they that has seen him shall say: Where is he?7 como un fantasma desaparece para siempre, los que le veían dicen: «¿Dónde está?»
As a dream that fleeth away he shall not be found, he shall pass as a vision of the night:8 Se vuela como un sueño inaprensible, se le ahuyenta igual que a una visión nocturna.
The eyes that had seen him, shall see him no more, neither shall his place any more behold him.9 El ojo que le observaba ya no le ve más, ni le divisa el lugar donde estaba.
His children shall be oppressed with want, and his hands shall render him his sorrow.10 A los pobres tendrán que indemnizar sus hijos, sus niños habrán de devolver sus bienes.
His bones shall be filled with the vices of his youth, and they shall sleep with him in the dust.11 Sus huesos rebosaban de vigor juvenil: mas ya con él postrado está en el polvo.
For when evil shall be sweet in his mouth, he will hide it under his tongue.12 Si el mal era dulce a su boca, si bajo su lengua lo albergaba,
He will spare it, and not leave it, and will hide it in his throat.13 si allí lo guardaba tenazmente y en medio del paladar lo retenía,
His bread in his belly shall be turned into the gall of asps within him.14 su alimento en sus entrañas se corrompe, en su interior se le hace hiel de áspid.
The riches which he hath swallowed; he shall vomit up, and God shall draw them out of his belly.15 Vomita las riquezas que engulló, Dios se las arranca de su vientre.
He shall suck the head of asps, and the viper's tongue shall kill him.16 Veneno de áspides chupaba: lengua de víbora le mata.
(Let him not see the streams of the river, the brooks of honey and of butter.)17 Ya no verá los arroyos de aceite, los torrentes de miel y de cuajada.
He shall be punished for all that he did, and yet shall not be consumed: according to the multitude of his devices so also shall he suffer.18 Devuelve su ganancia sin tragarla, no saborea el fruto de su negocio.
Because he broke in and stripped the poor: he hath violently taken away a house which he did not build.19 Porque estrujó las chozas de los pobres, robó casas en vez de construirlas;
And yet his belly was not filled: and when he hath the things he coveted, he shall not be able to possess them.20 porque su vientre se mostró insaciable, sus tesoros no le salvarán;
There was nothing left of his meat, and therefore nothing shall continue of his goods:21 porque a su voracidad nada escapaba, por eso no dura su prosperidad.
When he shall be filled, he shall be straitened, he shall burn, and every sorrow shall fall upon him.22 En plena abundancia la estrechez le sorprende, la desgracia, en tromba, cae sobre él.
May his belly be filled, that God may send forth the wrath of his indignation upon him, and rain down his war upon him.23 En el momento de llenar su vientre, suelta Dios contra él el ardor de su cólera y lanza sobre su carne una lluvia de saetas.
He shall flee from weapons of iron, and shall fall upon a bow of brass.24 Si del arma de hierro logra huir, el arco de bronce le traspasa.
The sword is drawn out, and cometh forth from its scabbard, and glittereth in his bitterness: the terrible ones shall go and come upon him.25 Sale una flecha por su espalda, una hoja fulgurante de su hígado. Los terrores se abalanzan sobre él,
All darkness is hid in his secret places: a fire that is not kindled shall devour him, he shall be afflicted when left in his tabernacle.26 total tiniebla aguarda a sus tesoros. Un fuego que nadie atiza le devora, y consume lo que en su tienda aún queda,
The heavens shall reveal his iniquity, and the earth shall rise up against him.27 Los cielos ponen su culpa al descubierto, y la tierra se alza contra él.
The offspring of his house shall be exposed, he shall be pulled down in the day of God's wrath.28 La hacienda de su casa se derrama, como torrentes, en el día de la cólera.
This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the inheritance of his doings from the Lord.29 Tal es la suerte que al malvado Dios reserva, la herencia de Dios para el maldito.
