DOUAI-RHEIMSBIBLES DES PEUPLES
Then Sophar the Naamathite answered, and said:1 Sofar de Nahama prit alors la parole:
Therefore various thoughts succeed one another in me, and my mind is hurried away to different things.2 Ceci justifie mes réflexions: je veux répondre et dire tout ce que je sens.
The doctrine with which thou reprovest me, I will hear, and the spirit of my understanding shall answer for me.3 Quand on me remet en place de façon humiliante, mes pensées m’inspirent une réponse.
This I know from the beginning, since man was placed upon the earth,4 Ne sais-tu pas que depuis toujours, depuis que l’homme a été mis sur terre,
that the praise of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment.5 le triomphe des méchants est de courte durée la joie de l’impie n’est que d’un instant.
If his pride mount up even to heaven, and his head touch the clouds:6 Sa taille a beau s’élever jusqu’au ciel, et sa tête toucher les nuages,
In the end he shall be destroyed like a dunghill, and they that has seen him shall say: Where is he?7 comme un fantôme il disparaît pour toujours, et ceux qui le voyaient demandent: “Où est-il?”
As a dream that fleeth away he shall not be found, he shall pass as a vision of the night:8 C’est comme un rêve envolé: on ne le trouve plus, comme un fantasme de la nuit: il a fui.
The eyes that had seen him, shall see him no more, neither shall his place any more behold him.9 On s’était habitué à le voir: c’est fini, les lieux qu’il fréquentait ne le reverront plus.
His children shall be oppressed with want, and his hands shall render him his sorrow.10 20:11 Sa carcasse était pleine de force juvénile, la voilà couchée avec lui dans la poussière!
His bones shall be filled with the vices of his youth, and they shall sleep with him in the dust.11 20:12 Sa bouche savourait le mal, il le cachait sous sa langue,
For when evil shall be sweet in his mouth, he will hide it under his tongue.12 20:13 il l’aimait tant qu’il ne le lâchait pas mais le gardait sous son palais…
He will spare it, and not leave it, and will hide it in his throat.13 20:14 Mais cette nourriture se change en ses entrailles, elle devient un poison dans son ventre:
His bread in his belly shall be turned into the gall of asps within him.14 20:15 le voici qui vomit les richesses dévorées, Dieu les fait ressortir de son ventre.
The riches which he hath swallowed; he shall vomit up, and God shall draw them out of his belly.15 20:16 Il suçait du venin de serpent: c’est une morsure de vipère qui le tue!
He shall suck the head of asps, and the viper's tongue shall kill him.16 20:17 Il ne reverra pas les ruisseaux d’huile fraîche, les torrents de miel et de crème.
(Let him not see the streams of the river, the brooks of honey and of butter.)17 20:18 Il lui faut rendre son gain: il n’a pu l’avaler; les fruits de son commerce ne seront pas pour lui.
He shall be punished for all that he did, and yet shall not be consumed: according to the multitude of his devices so also shall he suffer.18 20:19 C’est qu’il opprimait les pauvres, il volait la maison au lieu de la bâtir.
Because he broke in and stripped the poor: he hath violently taken away a house which he did not build.19 20:10 Ses fils rembourseront les pauvres, de ses mains, peut-être, il redonnera sa fortune.
And yet his belly was not filled: and when he hath the things he coveted, he shall not be able to possess them.20 Sa cupidité n’était jamais satisfaite, on ne se sauvait pas de son appétit:
There was nothing left of his meat, and therefore nothing shall continue of his goods:21 il dévorait et nul n’y échappait. C’est pourquoi son bonheur n’a pas duré.
When he shall be filled, he shall be straitened, he shall burn, and every sorrow shall fall upon him.22 En pleine réussite, les problèmes l’assaillent, et le malheur le frappe à coups redoublés.
May his belly be filled, that God may send forth the wrath of his indignation upon him, and rain down his war upon him.23 Alors qu’il est en train de se remplir le ventre, Dieu décharge sur lui sa colère et fait pleuvoir sur lui ses flèches.
He shall flee from weapons of iron, and shall fall upon a bow of brass.24 Échappe-t-il à la lame de fer? l’arc de bronze le transperce!
The sword is drawn out, and cometh forth from its scabbard, and glittereth in his bitterness: the terrible ones shall go and come upon him.25 La flèche est ressortie par son dos, la pointe a traversé son foie: le voilà sous le coup d’une angoisse de mort,
All darkness is hid in his secret places: a fire that is not kindled shall devour him, he shall be afflicted when left in his tabernacle.26 et son destin, ce sont les ténèbres. Un feu que nul n’a allumé le dévore et consume les survivants de sa tente.
The heavens shall reveal his iniquity, and the earth shall rise up against him.27 Les cieux ont dévoilé ses crimes, et la terre se soulève contre lui.
The offspring of his house shall be exposed, he shall be pulled down in the day of God's wrath.28 L’inondation emporte sa maison: ce sont les eaux de la colère de Dieu.
This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the inheritance of his doings from the Lord.29 Voilà le sort que Dieu réserve au méchant, l’héritage que Dieu lui promet.
