1 Sur toute la terre on parlait la même langue, on se servait des mêmes mots.	1 The whole world spoke the same language, with the same vocabulary.
2 Comme les hommes se dirigeaient vers l’orient, ils atteignirent une plaine au pays de Chinéar et s’y installèrent.	2 Now, as people moved eastwards they found a valley in the land of Shinar where they settled.
3 Alors ils se dirent les uns aux autres: “Faisons donc des briques et cuisons-les au feu.” La brique remplaça la pierre et le bitume leur servit de ciment.	3 They said to one another, 'Come, let us make bricks and bake them in the fire.' For stone they usedbricks, and for mortar they used bitumen.
4 Ils dirent encore: “Venez donc! Construisons-nous une ville, avec une tour dont le sommet sera dans le ciel et qui nous fera un nom. Cela nous évitera de nous disperser sur toute la surface de la terre.”	4 'Come,' they said, 'let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top reaching heaven. Let us makea name for ourselves, so that we do not get scattered all over the world.'
5 Yahvé descendit pour voir la ville et la tour que bâtissaient les hommes,	5 Now Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower that the people had built.
6 et il dit: “Voici qu’ils ne forment tous qu’un seul peuple, avec une même langue; s’ils commencent ainsi, aucun projet désormais ne leur sera impossible.	6 'So they are al a single people with a single language!' said Yahweh. 'This is only the start of theirundertakings! Now nothing they plan to do wil be beyond them.
7 Allons, descendons, et ici-même mettons la confusion dans leur langage pour qu’ils ne comprennent plus le langage les uns des autres.”	7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they cannot understand one another.'
8 De cette façon Yahvé les dispersa sur la surface de toute la terre et ils cessèrent de construire la ville.	8 Yahweh scattered them thence all over the world, and they stopped building the city.
9 C’est pour cela qu’on lui donna le nom de Babel (c’est-à-dire: Confusion). Là, en effet, Yahvé avait confondu le langage de toute la terre, et c’est de là que Yahvé les avait dispersés sur la surface de toute la terre.	9 That is why it was cal ed Babel, since there Yahweh confused the language of the whole world, andfrom there Yahweh scattered them al over the world.
10 Voici la descendance de Sem. À l’âge de 100 ans Sem engendra Arpakchad, deux ans après le déluge.	10 These are Shem's descendants: When Shem was a hundred years old he fathered Arpachshad, twoyears after the flood.
11 Après la naissance d’Arpakchad, Sem vécut encore 500 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.	11 After the birth of Arpachshad, Shem lived five hundred years and fathered sons and daughters.
12 À l’âge de 35 ans, Arpakchad engendra Chéla.	12 When Arpachshad was thirty-five years old he fathered Shelah.
13 Après la naissance de Chéla, Arpakchad vécut encore 403 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.	13 After the birth of Shelah, Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years and fathered sons anddaughters.
14 À l’âge de 30 ans, Chéla engendra Éber.	14 When Shelah was thirty years old he fathered Eber.
15 Après la naissance d’Éber, Chéla vécut encore 403 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.	15 After the birth of Eber, Shelah lived four hundred and three years and fathered sons and daughters.
16 À l’âge de 34 ans, Éber engendra Péleg.	16 When Eber was thirty-four years old he fathered Peleg.
17 Après la naissance de Péleg, Éber vécut encore 430 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.	17 After the birth of Peleg, Eber lived four hundred and thirty years and fathered sons and daughters.
18 À l’âge de 30 ans, Péleg engendra Réou.	18 When Peleg was thirty years old he fathered Reu.
19 Après la naissance de Réou, Péleg vécut encore 209 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.	19 After the birth of Reu, Peleg lived two hundred and nine years and fathered sons and daughters.
20 À l’âge de 32 ans, Réou engendra Séroug.	20 When Reu was thirty-two years old he fathered Serug.
21 Après la naissance de Séroug, Réou vécut encore 207 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.	21 After the birth of Serug, Reu lived two hundred and seven years and fathered sons and daughters.
22 À l’âge de 30 ans, Séroug engendra Nahor.	22 When Serug was thirty years old he fathered Nahor.
23 Après la naissance de Nahor, Séroug vécut encore 200 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.	23 After the birth of Nahor, Serug lived two hundred years and fathered sons and daughters.
24 À l’âge de 29 ans, Nahor engendra Térah.	24 When Nahor was twenty-nine years old he fathered Terah.
25 Après la naissance de Térah, Nahor vécut encore 119 ans, il engendra des fils et des filles.	25 After the birth of Terah, Nahor lived a hundred and nineteen years and fathered sons and daughters.
26 À l’âge de 70 ans, Térah engendra Abram, Nahor et Harân.	26 When Terah was seventy years old he fathered Abram, Nahor and Haran.
27 Voici la descendance de Térah: Térah engendra Abram, Nahor et Harân. Harân engendra Lot.	27 These are Terah's descendants: Terah fathered Abram, Nahor and Haran. Haran fathered Lot.
28 Harân mourut quand son père Térah vivait encore, dans son pays natal: Our des Kaldéens.	28 Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in his native land, Ur of the Chaldaeans.
29 Abram et Nahor se marièrent. La femme d’Abram s’appelait Saraï, la femme de Nahor s’appelait Milka, elle était fille de Harân, le père de Milka et de Yiska.	29 Abram and Nahor both married: Abram's wife was cal ed Sarai, Nahor's wife was called Milcahdaughter of Haran, father of Milcah and Iscah.
30 Or Saraï était stérile, elle n’avait pas d’enfant.	30 Sarai was barren, having no child.
31 Térah prit son fils Abram, son petit-fils Lot, fils de Harân et sa belle-fille Saraï, femme d’Abram. Il les fit sortir d’Our des Kaldéens pour gagner le pays de Canaan, mais, arrivés à Harrân, ils s’y installèrent.	31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law the wife ofAbram, and made them leave Ur of the Chaldaeans to go to the land of Canaan. But on arrival in Haran theysettled there.
32 Le total des années que vécut Térah fut de 205 ans, après quoi il mourut à Harrân.	32 Terah's life lasted two hundred and five years; then he died at Haran.
