1 « Conosci tu il tempo in cui le capre selvatiche figliano nelle rocce, hai assistito nel parto le cerve?	1 Knowest thou the time when the wild goats bring forth among the rocks, or hast thou observed the hinds when they fawn?
2 Hai contati i mesi di lor gravidanza, e sai il tempo del loro parto?	2 Hast thou numbered the months of their conceiving, or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?
3 S'incurvano per dare alla luce e partoriscono mandando gemiti.	3 They bow themselves to bring forth young, and they cast them, and send forth roarings.
4 I loro piccoli le lasciano per correre alla pastura; se ne vanno e non tornano più alle madri.	4 Their young are weaned and go to feed : they go forth, and return not to them.
5 Chi pose l'onagro in libertà e ne sciolse i legami?	5 Who hath sent out the wild ass free, and who hath loosed his bonds?
6 Io gli diedi una dimora nel deserto ed una terra salata ad abitare.	6 To whom I have given a house in the wilderness, and his dwellings in the barren land.
7 Egli disprezza l'affollamento della città e non sente il vociar dell'aguzzino.	7 He scorneth the multitude of the city, he heareth not the cry of the driver.
8 Vo1ge in giro gli occhi alle montagne di sua pastura e va in traccia d'ogni filo d'erba.	8 He looketh round about the mountains of his pasture, and seeketh for every green thing.
9 Il rinoceronte vorrà egli servirti? Se ne starà alla tua mangiatoia?	9 Shall the rhinoceros be willing to serve thee, or will he stay at thy crib?
10 Lo legherai al tuo giogo per arare? Romperà dietro a te le zolle delle tue valli?	10 Canst thou bind the rhinoceros with thy thong to plough, or will he break the clods of the valleys after thee?
11 Ti fiderai della sua gran forza? Gli affiderai i tuoi lavori?	11 Wilt thou have confidence in his great strength, and leave thy labours to him?
12 Credi tu che egli ti renda la tua sementè e ti empia la tua aia?	12 Wilt thou trust him that he will render thee the seed, and gather it into thy barnfloor?
13 La penna dello struzzo è simile alle penne della cicogna e dello sparviero.	13 The wing of the ostrich is like the wings of the heron, and of the hawk.
14 Quando egli abbandona le sue ova per terra, sei forse tu che le riscaldi sulla sabbia?	14 When she leaveth her eggs on the earth, thou perhaps wilt warm them in the dust.
15 Egli non pensa che un piede le potrà schiacciare, che la fiera le potrà calpestare.	15 She forgetteth that the foot may tread upon them, or that the beasts of the field may break them.
16 Spietato contro i suoi nati, come se non fossero suoi, rende la sua fatica vana anche non costretto dal timore;	16 She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers, she hath laboured in vain, no fear constraining her.
17 perché il Signore gli negò la saggezza e non gli diede giudizio.	17 For God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he given her understanding.
18 Ma quando è tempo stende in alto le sue ali e si burla del cavallo e del cavaliere.	18 When time shall be, she setteth up her wings on high : she scorneth the horse and his rider.
19 Sarai tu quello che darai la forza al destriero e gli vestirai il collo di fremiti?	19 Wilt thou give strength to the horse, or clothe his neck with neighing?
20 E lo farai saltare come locusta? La fierezza del suo sbuffare atterrisce.	20 Wilt thou lift him up like the locusts? the glory of his nostrils is terror.
21 Raspa la terra colla zampa, si slancia con audacia, va incontro agli armati.	21 He breaketh up the earth with his hoof, he pranceth boldly, he goeth forward to meet armed men.
22 Disprezza la paura, non cede alla spada;	22 He despiseth fear, he turneth not his back to the sword,
23 sopra di lui risonerà il turcasso, scintillerà la lancia e lo scudo.	23 Above him shall the quiver rattle, the spear and shield shall glitter.
24 Spumante e fremente divora la terra, non gli par vero che suoni la tromba.	24 Chasing and raging he swalloweth the ground, neither doth he make account when the noise of the trumpet soundeth.
25 Sentito lo squillo, dice: Via! Sente da lungi l'odor della battaglia, le esortazioni dei duci e il vociar dei soldati.	25 When he heareth the trumpet he saith : Ha, ha : he smelleth the battle afar off, the encouraging of the captains, and the shouting of the army.
26 Forse per la tua sapienza lo sparviero si veste di piume e spicca il volo verso il mezzodì?	26 Doth the hawk wax feathered by thy wisdom, spreading her wings to the south?
27 Forse al tuo cenno l'aquila si leverà in alto e porrà il suo nido nei luoghi più dovati?	27 Will the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest in high places?
28 Sta sopra le rocce, per­notta fra i dirupi scoscesi e sopra vette inaccessibili.	28 She abideth among the rocks, and dwelleth among cragged flints, and stony hills, where there is no access.
29 Di lassù con­templa la preda, e i suoi occhi ve­dono da lontano.	29 From thence she looketh for the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.
30 I suoi aqui­lotti lambiscono il sangue, ed essa si trova dovunque sia un cadavere ».	30 Her young ones shall suck up blood : and wheresoever the carcass shall be, she is immediately there.
31 Poi il Signore, seguitando a parlare, disse a Giobbe:	31 And the Lord went on, and said to Job :
32 « Chi chiede ragione a Dio s'acquieterà così facilmente? Certo chi critica Dio deve rispondergli ».	32 Shall he that contendeth with God be so easily silenced? surely he that reproveth God, ought to answer him.
33 Allora Giobbe rispose al Signore, dicendo:	33 Then Job answered the Lord, and said :
34 « Io, che ho parlato con leggerezza, che posso rispondere? Porrò la mia mano sulla mia bocca.	34 One thing I have spoken, which I wish I had not said : and another, to which I will add no more.
35 H0 detto una cosa, (oh, non l'avessi. detta!) e un'altra, e non dirò più nulla ».
