Then, when morning arrived, all the leaders of the priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, so that they might deliver him to death.1 Llegada la mañana, todos los sumos sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo celebraron consejo contra Jesús para darle muerte.
And they led him, bound, and handed him over to Pontius Pilate, the procurator.2 Y después de atarle, le llevaron y le entregaron al procurador Pilato.
Then Judas, who betrayed him, seeing that he had been condemned, regretting his conduct, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the leaders of the priests and the elders,3 Entonces Judas, el que le entregó, viendo que había sido condenado, fue acosado por el remordimiento, y devolvió las treinta monedas de plata a los sumos sacerdotes y a los ancianos,
saying, “I have sinned in betraying just blood.” But they said to him: “What is that to us? See to it yourself.”4 diciendo: «Pequé entregando sangre inocente». Ellos dijeron: «A nosotros, ¿qué? Tú verás».
And throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed. And going out, he hanged himself with a snare.5 El tiró las monedas en el Santuario; después se retiró y fue y se ahorcó.
But the leaders of the priests, having taken up the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the temple offerings, because it is the price of blood.”6 Los sumos sacerdotes recogieron las monedas y dijeron: «No es lícito echarlas en el tesoro de las ofrendas, porque son precio de sangre».
Then, having taken counsel, they bought the potter’s field with it, as a burying place for sojourners.7 Y después de deliberar, compraron con ellas el Campo del Alfarero como lugar de sepultura para los forasteros.
For this reason, that field is called Haceldama, that is, ‘The Field of Blood,’ even to this very day.8 Por esta razón ese campo se llamó «Campo de Sangre», hasta hoy.
Then what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one being appraised, whom they appraised before the sons of Israel,9 Entonces se cumplió el oráculo del profeta Jeremías: «Y tomaron las treinta monedas de plata, cantidad en que fue apreciado aquel a quien pusieron precio algunos hijos de Israel,
and they gave it for the potter’s field, just as the Lord appointed to me.”10 y las dieron por el Campo del Alfarero, según lo que me ordenó el Señor».
Now Jesus stood before the procurator, and the procurator questioned him, saying, “You are the king of the Jews?” Jesus said to him, “You are saying so.”11 Jesús compareció ante el procurador, y el procurador le preguntó: «¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos?» Respondió Jesús: «Sí, tú lo dices».
And when he was accused by the leaders of the priests and the elders, he responded nothing.12 Y, mientras los sumos sacerdotes y los ancianos le acusaban, no respondió nada.
Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how much testimony they speak against you?”13 Entonces le dice Pilato: «¿No oyes de cuántas cosas te acusan?»
And he did not respond any word to him, so that the procurator wondered greatly.14 Pero él a nada respondió, de suerte que el procurador estaba muy sorprendido.
Now on the solemn day, the procurator was accustomed to release to the people one prisoner, whomever they wished.15 Cada Fiesta, el procurador solía conceder al pueblo la libertad de un preso, el que quisieran.
And at that time, he had a notorious prisoner, who was called Barabbas.16 Tenían a la sazón un preso famoso, llamado Barrabás.
Therefore, having been gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Who is it that you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus, who is called Christ?”17 Y cuando ellos estaban reunidos, les dijo Pilato: «¿A quién queréis que os suelte, a Barrabás o a Jesús, el llamado Cristo?»,
For he knew that it was out of envy they had handed him over.18 pues sabía que le habían entregado por envidia.
But as he was sitting in the place for the tribunal, his wife sent to him, saying: “It is nothing to you, and he is just. For I have experienced many things today through a vision for his sake.”19 Mientras él estaba sentado en el tribunal, le mandó a decir su mujer: «No te metas con ese justo, porque hoy he sufrido mucho en sueños por su causa».
But the leaders of the priests and the elders persuaded the people, so that they would ask for Barabbas, and so that Jesus would perish.20 Pero los sumos sacerdotes y los ancianos lograron persuadir a la gente que pidiese la libertad de Barrabás y la muerte de Jesús.
Then, in response, the procurator said to them, “Which of the two do you want to be released to you?” But they said to him, “Barabbas.”21 Y cuando el procurador les dijo: «¿A cuál de los dos queréis que os suelte?», respondieron: «¡A Barrabás!»
Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do about Jesus, who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified.”22 Díceles Pilato: «Y ¿qué voy a hacer con Jesús, el llamado Cristo?» Y todos a una: «¡Sea crucificado!» -
The procurator said to them, “But what evil has he done?” But they cried out all the more, saying, “Let him be crucified.”23 «Pero ¿qué mal ha hecho?», preguntó Pilato. Mas ellos seguían gritando con más fuerza: «¡Sea crucificado!»
Then Pilate, seeing that he was able to accomplish nothing, but that a greater tumult was occurring, taking water, washed his hands in the sight of the people, saying: “I am innocent of the blood of this just man. See to it yourselves.”24 Entonces Pilato, viendo que nada adelantaba, sino que más bien se promovía tumulto, tomó agua y se lavó las manos delante de la gente diciendo: «Inocente soy de la sangre de este justo. Vosotros veréis».
And the entire people responded by saying, “May his blood be upon us and upon our children.”25 Y todo el pueblo respondió: «¡Su sangre sobre nosotros y sobre nuestros hijos!»
Then he released Barabbas to them. But Jesus, having been scourged, he handed over to them, so that he would be crucified.26 Entonces, les soltó a Barrabás; y a Jesús, después de azotarle, se lo entregó para que fuera crucificado.
Then the soldiers of the procurator, taking Jesus up to the praetorium, gathered the entire cohort around him.27 Entonces los soldados del procurador llevaron consigo a Jesús al pretorio y reunieron alrededor de él a toda la cohorte.
And stripping him, they put a scarlet cloak around him.28 Le desnudaron y le echaron encima un manto de púrpura;
And plaiting a crown of thorns, they placed it on his head, with a reed in his right hand. And genuflecting before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews.”29 y, trenzando una corona de espinas, se la pusieron sobre su cabeza, y en su mano derecha una caña; y doblando la rodilla delante de él, le hacían burla diciendo: «¡Salve, Rey de los judíos!»;
And spitting on him, they took the reed and struck his head.30 y después de escupirle, cogieron la caña y le golpeaban en la cabeza.
And after they had mocked him, they stripped him of the cloak, and clothed him with his own garments, and they led him away to crucify him.31 Cuando se hubieron burlado de él, le quitaron el manto, le pusieron sus ropas y le llevaron a crucificarle.
But as they were going out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, named Simon, whom they compelled to take up his cross.32 Al salir, encontraron a un hombre de Cirene llamado Simón, y le obligaron a llevar su cruz.
And they arrived at the place which is called Golgotha, which is the place of Calvary.33 Llegados a un lugar llamado Gólgota, esto es, «Calvario»,
And they gave him wine to drink, mixed with gall. And when he had tasted it, he refused to drink it.34 le dieron a beber vino mezclado con hiel; pero él, después de probarlo, no quiso beberlo.
Then, after they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots, in order to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying: “They divided my garments among them, and over my vestment they cast lots.”35 Una vez que le crucificaron, se repartieron sus vestidos, echando a suertes.
And sitting down, they observed him.36 Y se quedaron sentados allí para custodiarle.
And they set his accusation above his head, written as: THIS IS JESUS, KING OF THE JEWS.37 Sobre su cabeza pusieron, por escrito, la causa de su condena: «Este es Jesús, el Rey de los judíos».
Then two robbers were crucified with him: one on the right and one on the left.38 Y al mismo tiempo que a él crucifican a dos salteadores, uno a la derecha y otro a la izquierda.
But those passing by blasphemed him, shaking their heads,39 Los que pasaban por allí le insultaban, meneando la cabeza y diciendo:
and saying: “Ah, so you would destroy the temple of God and in three days rebuild it! Save your own self. If you are the Son of God, descend from the cross.”40 «Tú que destruyes el Santuario y en tres días lo levantas, ¡sálvate a ti mismo, si eres Hijo de Dios, y baja de la cruz!»
And similarly, the leaders of the priests, with the scribes and the elders, mocking him, said:41 Igualmente los sumos sacerdotes junto con los escribas y los ancianos se burlaban de él diciendo:
“He saved others; he cannot save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him descend now from the cross, and we will believe in him.42 «A otros salvó y a sí mismo no puede salvarse. Rey de Israel es: que baje ahora de la cruz, y creeremos en él.
He trusted in God; so now, let God free him, if he wills him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”43 Ha puesto su confianza en Dios; que le salve ahora, si es que de verdad le quiere; ya que dijo: “Soy Hijo de Dios.”»
Then, the robbers who were crucified with him also reproached him with the very same thing.44 De la misma manera le injuriaban también los salteadores crucificados con él.
Now from the sixth hour, there was darkness over the entire earth, even until the ninth hour.45 Desde la hora sexta hubo oscuridad sobre toda la tierra hasta la hora nona.
And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying: “Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”46 Y alrededor de la hora nona clamó Jesús con fuerte voz: «¡Elí, Elí! ¿lemá sabactaní?», esto es: «¡Dios mío, Dios mío! ¿por qué me has abandonado?»
Then certain ones who were standing and listening there said, “This man calls upon Elijah.”47 Al oírlo algunos de los que estaban allí decían: «A Elías llama éste».
And one of them, running quickly, took a sponge and filled it with vinegar, and he set it on a reed and he gave it to him to drink.48 Y enseguida uno de ellos fue corriendo a tomar una esponja, la empapó en vinagre y, sujetándola a una caña, le ofrecía de beber.
Yet truly, the others said, “Wait. Let us see whether Elijah will come to free him.”49 Pero los otros dijeron: «Deja, vamos a ver si viene Elías a salvarle».
Then Jesus, crying out again with a loud voice, gave up his life.50 Pero Jesús, dando de nuevo un fuerte grito, exhaló el espíritu.
And behold, the veil of the temple was torn into two parts, from top to bottom. And the earth was shaken, and the rocks were split apart.51 En esto, el velo del Santuario se rasgó en dos, de arriba abajo; tembló la tierra y las rocas se hendieron.
And the tombs were opened. And many bodies of the saints, which had been sleeping, arose.52 Se abrieron los sepulcros, y muchos cuerpos de santos difuntos resucitaron.
And going out from the tombs, after his resurrection, they went into the holy city, and they appeared to many.53 Y, saliendo de los sepulcros después de la resurrección de él, entraron en la Ciudad Santa y se aparecieron a muchos.
Now the centurion and those who were with him, guarding Jesus, having seen the earthquake and the things that were done, were very fearful, saying: “Truly, this was the Son of God.”54 Por su parte, el centurión y los que con él estaban guardando a Jesús, al ver el terremoto y lo que pasaba, se llenaron de miedo y dijeron: «Verdaderamente éste era Hijo de Dios».
And in that place, there were many women, at a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him.55 Había allí muchas mujeres mirando desde lejos, aquellas que habían seguido a Jesús desde Galilea para servirle.
Among these were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.56 Entre ellas estaban María Magdalena, María la madre de Santiago y de José, y la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo.
Then, when evening had arrived, a certain wealthy man from Arimathea, named Joseph, arrived, who himself was also a disciple of Jesus.57 Al atardecer, vino un hombre rico de Arimatea, llamado José, que se había hecho también discípulo de Jesús.
This man approached Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered the body to be released.58 Se presentó a Pilato y pidió el cuerpo de Jesús. Entonces Pilato dio orden de que se le entregase.
And Joseph, taking the body, wrapped it in a clean finely-woven linen cloth,59 José tomó el cuerpo, lo envolvió en una sábana limpia
and he placed it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out of a rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and he went away.60 y lo puso en su sepulcro nuevo que había hecho excavar en la roca; luego, hizo rodar una gran piedra hasta la entrada del sepulcro y se fue.
Now Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the sepulcher.61 Estaban allí María Magdalena y la otra María, sentadas frente al sepulcro.
Then the next day, which is after the Preparation day, the leaders of the priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate together,62 Al otro día, el siguiente a la Preparación, los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos se reunieron ante Pilato
saying: “Lord, we have remembered that that this seducer said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days, I will rise again.’63 y le dijeron: «Señor, recordamos que ese impostor dijo cuando aún vivía: “A los tres días resucitaré.”
Therefore, order the sepulcher to be guarded until the third day, lest perhaps his disciples may come and steal him, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ And this last error would be worse than the first.”64 Manda, pues, que quede asegurado el sepulcro hasta el tercer día, no sea que vengan sus discípulos, lo roben y digan luego al pueblo: “Resucitó de entre los muertos”, y la última impostura sea peor que la primera».
Pilate said to them: “You have a guard. Go, guard it as you know how.”65 Pilato les dijo: «Tenéis una guardia. Id, aseguradlo como sabéis».
Then, going out, they secured the sepulcher with guards, sealing the stone.66 Ellos fueron y aseguraron el sepulcro, sellando la piedra y poniendo la guardia.
