"I have told you this so that you may not fall away.1 These things have I spoken to you, that you may not be scandalized.
They will expel you from the synagogues; in fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God.2 They will put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you, will think that he doth a service to God.
They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me.3 And these things will they do to you; because they have not known the Father, nor me.
I have told you this so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you. "I did not tell you this from the beginning, because I was with you.4 But these things I have told you, that when the hour shall come, you may remember that I told you of them.
But now I am going to the one who sent me, and not one of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'5 But I told you not these things from the beginning, because I was with you. And now I go to him that sent me, and none of you asketh me: Whither goest thou?
But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts.6 But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.7 But I tell you the truth: it is expedient to you that I go: for if I go not, the Paraclete will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
And when he comes he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation:8 And when he is come, he will convince the world of sin, and of justice, and of judgment.
sin, because they do not believe in me;9 Of sin: because they believed not in me.
righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me;10 And of justice: because I go to the Father; and you shall see me no longer.
condemnation, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.11 And of judgment: because the prince of this world is already judged.
"I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.12 I have yet many things to say to you: but you cannot bear them now.
But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming.13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will teach you all truth. For he shall not speak of himself; but what things soever he shall hear, he shall speak; and the things that are to come, he shall shew you.
He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.14 He shall glorify me; because he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it to you.
Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.15 All things whatsoever the Father hath, are mine. Therefore I said, that he shall receive of mine, and shew it to you.
"A little while and you will no longer see me, and again a little while later and you will see me."16 A little while, and now you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me: because I go to the Father.
So some of his disciples said to one another, "What does this mean that he is saying to us, 'A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?"17 Then some of the disciples said one to another: What is this that he saith to us: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me, and, because I go to the Father?
So they said, "What is this 'little while' (of which he speaks)? We do not know what he means."18 They said therefore: What is this that he saith, A little while? we know not what he speaketh.
Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Are you discussing with one another what I said, 'A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me'?19 And Jesus knew that they had a mind to ask him; and he said to them: Of this do you inquire among yourselves, because I said: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me?
Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.20 Amen, amen I say to you, that you shall lament and weep, but the world shall rejoice; and you shall be made sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.21 A woman, when she is in labour, hath sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she hath brought forth the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
So you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.22 So also you now indeed have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice; and your joy no man shall take from you.
On that day you will not question me about anything. Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.23 And in that day you shall not ask me any thing. Amen, amen I say to you: if you ask the Father any thing in my name, he will give it you.
Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.24 Hitherto you have not asked any thing in my name. Ask, and you shall receive; that your joy may be full.
"I have told you this in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father.25 These things I have spoken to you in proverbs. The hour cometh, when I will no more speak to you in proverbs, but will shew you plainly of the Father.
On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you.26 In that day you shall ask in my name; and I say not to you, that I will ask the Father for you:
For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God.27 For the Father himself loveth you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again I leave the world, and I go to the Father.
His disciples said, "Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech.29 His disciples say to him: Behold, now thou speakest plainly, and speakest no proverb.
Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God."30 Now we know that thou knowest all things, and thou needest not that any man should ask thee. By this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
Jesus answered them, "Do you believe now?31 Jesus answered them: Do you now believe?
Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me.32 Behold, the hour cometh, and it is now come, that you shall be scattered every man to his own, and shall leave me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world."33 These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you shall have distress: but have confidence, I have overcome the world.
