1 Non farti in vece d'amico, inimico del prossimo, conciossiachè l'uomo malvagio avrà in suo retaggio l'obbrobrio, e l'ignominia, particolarmente ogni peccatore di doppia lingua, e invidioso.	1 Instead of a friend become not an enemy to thy neighbour: for an evil man shall inherit reproach and shame, so shall every sinner that is envious and double tongued.
2 Non ti innalzare ne' pensieri dell'animo tuo come un toro, affinchè non avvenga, che il tuo valore resti schiacciato dalla tua stoltezza,	2 Extol not thyself in the thoughts of thy soul like a bull: lest thy strength be quashed by folly,
3 Ed ella consumi le tue foglie, e disperda i tuoi frutti, e tu rimanga come una pianta secca in mezzo al deserto.	3 And it eat up thy leaves, and destroy thy fruit: and thou be left as a dry tree in the wilderness.
4 Perocché l'anima malvagia distrugge in chi ella si trova, e lo fa argomento di gaudio pei suoi nemici, e lo condurrà alla sorte degli empj.	4 For a wicked soul shall destroy him that hath it, and maketh him to be a joy to his enemies, and shall lead him into the lot of the wicked.
5 La parola dolce moltiplica gli amici, e calma i nemici, e la lingua graziosa nell'uom virtuoso giova assai.	5 A sweet word multiplieth friends, and appeaseth enemies, and a gracious tongue in a good man aboundeth.
6 Vivi in amistà co' molti, ma prendine uno di mille per tuo consigliere.	6 Be in peace with many, but let one of a thousand be thy counsellor.
7 Se ti fai un amico, fattelo dopo averlo sperimentato, e non ti fidar leggermente di lui.	7 If thou wouldst get a friend, try him before thou takest him, and do not credit him easily.
8 Perocché bavvi chi è amico quando gli torna comodo, e non dura ad esserlo nel tempo della tribolazione.	8 For there is a friend for his own occasion, and he will not abide in the day of thy trouble.
9 E v'ha tal amico, che si cambia in nimico; e v'ha tal amico, che metterà fuori l'odio, e le acerbe querele, e gli strapazzi.	9 And there is a friend that turneth to enmity; and there is a friend that will disclose hatred and strife and reproaches.
10 E havvi qualche amico compagno di tavola, il quale sparisce nel giorno della necessità.	10 And there is a friend a companion at the table, and he will not abide in the day of distress.
11 Se l'amico persiste costante, egli sarà come tuo eguale; e porrà le mani liberamente nelle cose della tua casa:	11 A friend ii he continue steadfast, shall be to thee as thyself, and shall act with confidence among them of thy household.
12 Se egli si umilia dinanzi a te, e si ritira dalla tua presenza, avrai un'amicizia buona, e unanime.	12 If he humble himself before thee, and hide himself from thy face, thou shalt have unanimous friendship for good.
13 Allontanati da' tuoi nemici; e sta in guardia riguardo agli amici.	13 Separate thyself from thy enemies, and take heed of thy friends.
14 L'amico fedele è una protezione possente: e chi lo trova, ha trovato un tesoro.	14 A faithful friend is a strong defence: and he that hath found him, hath found a treasure.
15 Nissuna cosa è da paragonarsi all'amico fedele; e non è degna una massa d'oro, e d'argento di esser messa in bilancia colla bontà della fede di lui.	15 Nothing can be compared to a faithful friend, and no weight of gold and silver is able to countervail the goodness of his fidelity.
16 L'amico fedele è balsamo di vita, e di immortalità; e quelli, che temono il Signore lo troveranno.	16 A faithful friend is the medicine of life and immortality: and they that fear the Lord, shall find him.
17 Chi teme Dio avrà parimente una buona amicizia; perché il suo amico sarà simile a lui.	17 He that feareth God, shall likewise have good friendship: because according to him shall his friend be.
18 Figliuolo dalla tua giovinezza abbraccia gli insegnamenti, e fino alla vecchiezza vi troverai la sapienza.	18 My son, from thy youth up receive instruction, and even to thy grey hairs thou shalt find wisdom.
19 Come quegli, che ara, e semina, accostati tu ad essa, e aspetta i suoi buoni frutti:	19 Come to her as one that plougheth, and soweth, and wait for her good fruits:
20 Perocché un pochetto ti affaticherai in coltivandola, ma presto mangerai di quel, che ella produce.	20 For in working about her thou shalt labour a little, and shalt quickly eat of her fruits.
21 Come aspra oltre modo è la sapienza agli uomini ignoranti! lo stolto non istarà daccordo con lei.	21 How very unpleasant is wisdom to the unlearned, and the unwise will not continue with her.
22 Ella sarà per essi come grossa pietra da prova, ed eglino non tarderanno a gettarla per terra.	22 She shall be to them as a mighty stone of trial, and they will cast her from them before it be long.
23 Perocché la sapienza, che ammaestra, è qual ella si noma, e non è conosciuta da molti; ma con quelli, che la conoscono, ella si sta fino (che li conduca) al cospetto di Dio.	23 For the wisdom of doctrine is according to her name, and she is not manifest unto many, but with them to whom she is known, she continueth even to the sight of God.
24 Figliuolo ascolta, e abbraccia un saggio avvertimento, e non rigettare i miei consiglj.	24 Give ear, my son, and take wise counsel, and cast not away my advice.
25 Metti i tuoi piedi ne' ceppi di lei, e porgi il tuo collo alle sue catene.	25 Put thy feet into her fetters, and thy neck into her chains:
26 Piega il tuo dosso, e portala; e non ti rechino noia i suoi legami.	26 Bow down thy shoulder, and bear her, and be not grieved with her bands.
27 Con tutto l'animo tuo accostati a lei; e con tutto il tuo potere segui le vie di lei.	27 Come to her with all thy mind, and keep her ways with all thy power.
28 Cercala, ed ella si manifesterà a te; e quando la possederai, non abbandonarla:	28 Search for her, and she shall be made known to thee, and when thou hast gotten her, let her not go:
29 Perocché al fine in lei troverai riposo; ed ella si cangerà in diletto per te.	29 For in the latter end thou shalt find rest in her, and she shall be turned to thy joy.
30 E i suoi ceppi saranno la tua forte difesa, e base di valore; e le catene di lei veste di gloria;	30 Then shall her fetters be a strong defence for thee, and a firm foundation, and her chain a robe of glory:
31 Perocché in lei si ha lo splendore della vita; e le sue catene sono fascie, che stringendo risanano.	31 For in her is the beauty of life, and her bands are a healthful binding.
32 Di lei ti rivestirai come di veste gloriosa, e la metterai sul tuo capo qual corona di giocondità.	32 Thou shalt put her on as a robe of glory, and thee shalt set her upon thee as a crown of joy.
33 Figliuolo se tu darai retta a me, acquisterai dottrina; e se applicherai la tua mente, sarai sapiente.	33 My son, if thou wilt attend to me, thou shalt learn: and if thou wilt apply thy mind, thou shalt be wise.
34 Se porgerai le tue orecchie, acquisterai intelligenza; e se amerai di ascoltare, sarai sapiente.	34 If thou wilt incline thy ear, thou shalt receive instruction: and if thou love to hear, thou shalt be wise.
35 Frequenta le adunanze dei seniori prudenti; e unisciti di cuore alla loro saggezza, al fin di poter ascoltare tutto quello, che di Dio si ragiona, e non siano ignote a te le sentenze degne di lode.	35 Stand in the multitude of ancients that are wise, and join thyself from thy heart to their wisdom, that thou mayst hear every discourse of God, and the sayings of praise may not escape thee.
36 Se tu vedi un uomo sensato, va di buon mattino a trovarlo; e il tuo piè consumi i gradini della sua porta.	36 And if thou see a man of understanding, go to him early in the morning, and let thy foot wear the steps of his doors.
37 I tuoi pensieri siano fissi ne' precetti di Dio, e medita di continuo i suoi comandamenti; ed egli ti darà un cuore, e la sapienza bramata da te ti sarà con ceduta.	37 Let thy thoughts be upon the precepts of God, and meditate continually on his commandments: and he will give thee a heart, and the desire of wisdom shall be given thee.
