Première épître à Timothée 3

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Elle est sûre cette parole: celui qui aspire à la charge d'épiscope désire une noble fonction.	1 Here is a saying that you can rely on: to want to be a presiding elder is to desire a noble task.
2 Aussi faut-il que l'épiscope soit irréprochable, mari d'une seule femme, qu'il soit sobre,pondéré, courtois, hospitalier, apte à l'enseignement,	2 That is why the presiding elder must have an impeccable character. Husband of one wife, he must betemperate, discreet and courteous, hospitable and a good teacher;
3 ni buveur ni batailleur, mais bienveillant, ennemi des chicanes, détaché de l'argent,	3 not a heavy drinker, nor hot-tempered, but gentle and peaceable, not avaricious,
4 sachant bien gouverner sa propre maison et tenir ses enfants dans la soumission d'une manièreparfaitement digne.	4 a man who manages his own household wel and brings his children up to obey him and be wel -behaved:
5 Car celui qui ne sait pas gouverner sa propre maison, comment pourrait-il prendre soin del'Eglise de Dieu?	5 how can any man who does not understand how to manage his own household take care of the Churchof God?
6 Que ce ne soit pas un converti de fraîche date, de peur que, l'orgueil lui tournant la tête, il nevienne à encourir la même condamnation que le diable.	6 He should not be a new convert, in case pride should turn his head and he incur the samecondemnation as the devil.
7 Il faut en outre que ceux du dehors rendent de lui un bon témoignage, de peur qu'il ne tombedans l'opprobre et dans les filets du diable.	7 It is also necessary that he be held in good repute by outsiders, so that he never falls into disrepute andinto the devil's trap.
8 Les diacres, eux aussi, seront des hommes dignes, n'ayant qu'une parole, modérés dans l'usagedu vin, fuyant les profits déshonnêtes.	8 Similarly, deacons must be respectable, not double-tongued, moderate in the amount of wine they drinkand with no squalid greed for money.
9 Qu'ils gardent le mystère de la foi dans une conscience pure.	9 They must hold to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.
10 On commencera par les mettre à l'épreuve, et ensuite, si on n'a rien à leur reprocher, on lesadmettra aux fonctions de diacres.	10 They are first to be examined, and admitted to serve as deacons only if there is nothing against them.
11 Que pareillement les femmes soient dignes, point médisantes, sobres, fidèles en tout.	11 Similarly, women must be respectable, not gossips, but sober and whol y reliable.
12 Les diacres doivent être maris d'une seule femme, savoir bien gouverner leurs enfants et leurpropre maison.	12 Deacons must be husbands of one wife and must be people who manage their children andhouseholds wel .
13 Ceux qui remplissent bien leurs fonctions s'acquièrent un rang honorable et une fermeassurance en la foi au Christ Jésus.	13 Those of them who carry out their duties wel as deacons wil earn a high standing for themselves andan authoritative voice in matters concerning faith in Christ Jesus.
14 En t'écrivant cela, j'espère te rejoindre bientôt.	14 I write this to you in the hope that I may be able to come to you soon;
15 Si toutefois je tardais, il faut que tu saches comment te comporter dans la maison de Dieu -je veux dire l'Eglise du Dieu vivant --: colonne et support de la vérité.	15 but in case I should be delayed, I want you to know how people ought to behave in God's household --that is, in the Church of the living God, pillar and support of the truth.
16 Oui, c'est incontestablement un grand mystère que celui de la piété: Il a été manifesté dans lachair, justifié dans l'Esprit, vu des anges, proclamé chez les païens, cru dans le monde, enlevé dans la gloire.	16 Without any doubt, the mystery of our religion is very deep indeed: He was made visible in the flesh,justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed to the gentiles, believed in throughout the world, taken up inglory.
