Première épître aux Corinthiens 8

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Pour ce qui est des viandes immolées aux idoles, nous avons tous la science, c'est entendu.Mais la science enfle; c'est la charité qui édifie.	1 Now about food which has been dedicated to false gods. We are wel aware that al of us haveknowledge; but while knowledge puffs up, love is what builds up.
2 Si quelqu'un s'imagine connaître quelque chose, il ne connaît pas encore comme il fautconnaître;	2 Someone may think that he has ful knowledge of something and yet not know it as wel as he should;
3 mais si quelqu'un aime Dieu, celui-là est connu de lui.	3 but someone who loves God is known by God.
4 Donc, pour ce qui est de manger des viandes immolées aux idoles, nous savons qu'une idolen'est rien dans le monde et qu'il n'est de Dieu que le Dieu unique.	4 On the subject of eating foods dedicated to false gods, we are wel aware that none of the false godsexists in reality and that there is no God other than the One.
5 Car, bien qu'il y ait, soit au ciel, soit sur la terre, de prétendus dieux - et de fait il y a quantitéde dieux et quantité de seigneurs --,	5 Though there are so-cal ed gods, in the heavens or on earth -- and there are plenty of gods and plentyof lords-
6 pour nous en tout cas, il n'y a qu'un seul Dieu, le Père, de qui tout vient et pour qui noussommes, et un seul Seigneur, Jésus Christ, par qui tout existe et par qui nous sommes.	6 yet for us there is only one God, the Father from whom al things come and for whom we exist, and oneLord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things come and through whom we exist.
7 Mais tous n'ont pas la science. Certains, par suite de leur fréquentation encore récente desidoles, mangent les viandes immolées comme telles, et leur conscience, qui est faible, s'en trouve souillée.	7 However, not everybody has this knowledge. There are some in whose consciences false gods stillplay such a part that they take the food as though it had been dedicated to a god; then their conscience, beingvulnerable, is defiled,
8 Ce n'est pas un aliment, certes, qui nous rapprochera de Dieu. Si nous n'en mangeons pas,nous n'avons rien de moins; et si nous en mangeons, nous n'avons rien de plus.	8 But of course food cannot make us acceptable to God; we lose nothing by not eating it, we gain nothingby eating it.
9 Mais prenez garde que cette liberté dont vous usez ne devienne pour les faibles occasions dechute.	9 Only be careful that this freedom of yours does not in any way turn into an obstacle to trip those whoare vulnerable.
10 Si en effet quelqu'un te voit, toi qui as la science, attablé dans un temple d'idoles, saconscience à lui qui est faible ne va-t-elle pas se croire autorisée à manger des viandes immolées aux idoles?	10 Suppose someone sees you, who have the knowledge, sitting eating in the temple of some false god,do you not think that his conscience, vulnerable as it is, may be encouraged to eat foods dedicated to falsegods?
11 Et ta science alors va faire périr le faible, ce frère pour qui le Christ est mort!	11 And then it would be through your knowledge that this brother for whom Christ died, vulnerable as heis, has been lost.
12 En péchant ainsi contre vos frères, en blessant leur conscience, qui est faible, c'est contre leChrist que vous péchez.	12 So, sinning against your brothers and wounding their vulnerable consciences, you would be sinningagainst Christ.
13 C'est pourquoi, si un aliment doit causer la chute de mon frère, je me passerai de viande àtout jamais, afin de ne pas causer la chute de mon frère.	13 That is why, if food can be the cause of a brother's downfal , I wil never eat meat any more, ratherthan cause my brother's downfal .
