1 J'en viens maintenant à ce que vous m'avez écrit. Il est bon pour l'homme de s'abstenir de lafemme.	1 Now concerning the thing whereof you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
2 Toutefois, à cause des débauches, que chaque homme ait sa femme et chaque femme sonmari.	2 But for fear of fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
3 Que le mari s'acquitte de son devoir envers sa femme, et pareillement la femme envers sonmari.	3 Let the husband render the debt to his wife, and the wife also in like manner to the husband.
4 La femme ne dispose pas de son corps, mais le mari. Pareillement, le mari ne dispose pas deson corps, mais la femme.	4 The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband. And in like manner the husband also hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
5 Ne vous refusez pas l'un à l'autre, si ce n'est d'un commun accord, pour un temps, afin devaquer à la prière; et de nouveau soyez ensemble, de peur que Satan ne profite, pour vous tenter, de votreincontinence.	5 Defraud not one another, except, perhaps, by consent, for a time, that you may give yourselves to prayer; and return together again, lest Satan tempt you for your incontinency.
6 Ce que je dis là est une concession, non un ordre.	6 But I speak this by indulgence, not by commandment.
7 Je voudrais que tous les hommes fussent comme moi; mais chacun reçoit de Dieu son donparticulier, celui-ci d'une manière, celui-là de l'autre.	7 For I would that all men were even as myself: but every one hath his proper gift from God; one after this manner, and another after that.
8 Je dis toutefois aux célibataires et aux veuves qu'il leur est bon de demeurer comme moi.	8 But I say to the unmarried, and to the widows: It is good for them if they so continue, even as I.
9 Mais s'ils ne peuvent se contenir, qu'ils se marient: mieux vaut se marier que de brûler.	9 But if they do not contain themselves, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to be burnt.
10 Quant aux personnes mariées, voici ce que je prescris, non pas moi, mais le Seigneur: que lafemme ne se sépare pas de son mari --	10 But to them that are married, not I but the Lord commandeth, that the wife depart not from her husband.
11 au cas où elle s'en séparerait, qu'elle ne se remarie pas ou qu'elle se réconcilie avec son mari -et que le mari ne répudie pas sa femme.	11 And if she depart, that she remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband. And let not the husband put away his wife.
12 Quant aux autres, c'est moi qui leur dis, non le Seigneur: si un frère a une femme noncroyante qui consente à cohabiter avec lui, qu'il ne la répudie pas.	12 For to the rest I speak, not the Lord. If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she consent to dwell with him, let him not put her away.
13 Une femme a-t-elle un mari non croyant qui consente à cohabiter avec elle, qu'elle ne répudiepas son mari.	13 And if any woman hath a husband that believeth not, and he consent to dwell with her, let her not put away her husband.
14 En effet le mari non croyant se trouve sanctifié par sa femme, et la femme non croyante setrouve sanctifiée par le mari croyant. Car autrement, vos enfants seraient impurs, alors qu'ils sont saints!	14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the believing wife; and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the believing husband: otherwise your children should be unclean; but now they are holy.
15 Mais si la partie non croyante veut se séparer, qu'elle se sépare; en pareil cas, le frère ou lasoeur ne sont pas liés: Dieu vous a appelés à vivre en paix.	15 But if the unbeliever depart, let him depart. For a brother or sister is not under servitude in such cases. But God hath called us in peace.
16 Et que sais-tu, femme, si tu sauveras ton mari? Et que sais-tu, mari, si tu sauveras ta femme?	16 For how knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband ? Or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife ?
17 Par ailleurs, que chacun continue de vivre dans la condition que lui a départie le Seigneur, telque l'a trouvé l'appel de Dieu. C'est la règle que j'établis dans toutes les Eglises.	17 But as the Lord hath distributed to every one, as God hath called every one, so let him walk: and so in all churches I teach.
18 Quelqu'un était-il circoncis lors de son appel? Qu'il ne se fasse pas de prépuce. L'appel l'a-t-iltrouvé incirconcis? Qu'il ne se fasse pas circoncire.	18 Is any man called, being circumcised ? let him not procure uncircumcision. Is any man called in uncircumcision ? let him not be circumcised.
19 La circoncision n'est rien, et l'incirconcision n'est rien; ce qui compte, c'est de garder lescommandements de Dieu.	19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing: but the observance of the commandments of God.
20 Que chacun demeure dans l'état où l'a trouvé l'appel de Dieu.	20 Let every man abide in the same calling in which he was called.
21 Etais-tu esclave, lors de ton appel? Ne t'en soucie pas. Et même si tu peux devenir libre, metsplutôt à profit ta condition d'esclave.	21 Wast thou called, being a bondman ? care not for it; but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather.
22 Car celui qui était esclave lors de son appel dans le Seigneur est un affranchi du Seigneur;pareillement celui qui était libre lors de son appel est un esclave du Christ.	22 For he that is called in the Lord, being a bondman, is the freeman of the Lord. Likewise he that is called, being free, is the bondman of Christ.
23 Vous avez été bel et bien achetés! Ne vous rendez pas esclaves des hommes.	23 You are bought with a price; be not made the bondslaves of men.
24 Que chacun, frères, demeure devant Dieu dans l'état où l'a trouvé son appel.	24 Brethren, let every man, wherein he was called, therein abide with God.
25 Pour ce qui est des vierges, je n'ai pas d'ordre du Seigneur, mais je donne un avis en hommequi, par la miséricorde du Seigneur, est digne de confiance.	25 Now concerning virgins, I have no commandment of the Lord; but I give counsel, as having obtained mercy of the Lord, to be faithful.
26 Je pense donc que c'est une bonne chose, en raison de la détresse présente, que c'est unebonne chose pour l'homme d'être ainsi.	26 I think therefore that this is good for the present necessity, that it is good for a man so to be.
27 Es-tu lié à une femme? Ne cherche pas à rompre. N'es-tu pas lié à une femme? Ne cherchepas de femme.	27 Art thou bound to a wife ? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife ? seek not a wife.
28 Si cependant tu te maries, tu ne pèches pas; et si la jeune fille se marie, elle ne pèche pas.Mais ceux-là connaîtront la tribulation dans leur chair, et moi, je voudrais vous l'épargner.	28 But if thou take a wife, thou hast not sinned. And if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned: nevertheless, such shall have tribulation of the flesh. But I spare you.
29 Je vous le dis, frères: le temps se fait court. Que désormais ceux qui ont femme viventcomme s'ils n'en avaient pas;	29 This therefore I say, brethren; the time is short; it remaineth, that they also who have wives, be as if they had none;
30 ceux qui pleurent, comme s'il ne pleuraient pas; ceux qui sont dans la joie, comme s'ilsn'étaient pas dans la joie; ceux qui achètent, comme s'ils ne possédaient pas;	30 And they that weep, as though they wept not; and they that rejoice, as if they rejoiced not; and they that buy, as though they possessed not;
31 ceux qui usent de ce monde, comme s'ils n'en usaient pas vraiment. Car elle passe, la figurede ce monde.	31 And they that use this world, as if they used it not: for the fashion of this world passeth away.
32 Je voudrais vous voir exempts de soucis. L'homme qui n'est pas marié a souci des affaires duSeigneur, des moyens de plaire au Seigneur.	32 But I would have you to be without solicitude. He that is without a wife, is solicitous for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please God.
33 Celui qui s'est marié a souci des affaires du monde, des moyens de plaire à sa femme;	33 But he that is with a wife, is solicitous for the things of the world, how he may please his wife: and he is divided.
34 et le voilà partagé. De même la femme sans mari, comme la jeune fille, a souci des affairesdu Seigneur; elle cherche à être sainte de corps et d'esprit. Celle qui s'est mariée a souci des affaires du monde,des moyens de plaire à son mari.	34 And the unmarried woman and the virgin thinketh on the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit. But she that is married thinketh on the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
35 Je dis cela dans votre propre intérêt, non pour vous tendre un piège, mais pour vous porter àce qui est digne et qui attache sans partage au Seigneur.	35 And this I speak for your profit: not to cast a snare upon you; but for that which is decent, and which may give you power to attend upon the Lord, without impediment.
36 Si quelqu'un pense, étant en pleine ardeur juvénile, qu'il risque de mal se conduire vis-à-visde sa fiancée, et que les choses doivent suivre leur cours, qu'il fasse ce qu'il veut: il ne pèche pas, qu'ils semarient!	36 But if any man think that he seemeth dishonoured, with regard to his virgin, for that she is above the age, and it must so be: let him do what he will; he sinneth not, if she marry.
37 Mais celui qui a pris dans son coeur une ferme résolution, en dehors de toute contrainte, engardant le plein contrôle de sa volonté, et a ainsi décidé en lui-même de respecter sa vierge, celui-là fait bien.	37 For he that hath determined being steadfast in his heart, having no necessity, but having power of his own will; and hath judged this in his heart, to keep his virgin, doth well.
38 Ainsi celui qui se marie avec sa fiancée fait bien, mais celui qui ne se marie pas avec elle faitmieux encore.	38 Therefore, both he that giveth his virgin in marriage, doth well; and he that giveth her not, doth better.
39 La femme demeure liée à son mari aussi longtemps qu'il vit; mais si le mari meurt, elle estlibre d'épouser qui elle veut, dans le Seigneur seulement.	39 A woman is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband die, she is at liberty: let her marry to whom she will; only in the Lord.
40 Elle sera pourtant plus heureuse, à mon sens, si elle reste comme elle est. Et je pense bien,moi aussi, avoir l'Esprit de Dieu.	40 But more blessed shall she be, if she so remain, according to my counsel; and I think that I also have the spirit of God.
