Première épître aux Corinthiens 14

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Recherchez la charité; aspirez aussi aux dons spirituels, surtout à celui de prophétie.	1 Make love your aim; but be eager, too, for spiritual gifts, and especial y for prophesying.
2 Car celui qui parle en langue ne parle pas aux hommes, mais à Dieu; personne en effet necomprend: il dit en esprit des choses mystérieuses.	2 Those who speak in a tongue speak to God, but not to other people, because nobody understandsthem; they are speaking in the Spirit and the meaning is hidden.
3 Celui qui prophétise, au contraire, parle aux hommes; il édifie, exhorte, réconforte.	3 On the other hand, someone who prophesies speaks to other people, building them up and givingthem encouragement and reassurance.
4 Celui qui parle en langue s'édifie lui-même, celui qui prophétise édifie l'assemblée.	4 Those who speak in a tongue may build themselves up, but those who prophesy build up thecommunity.
5 Je voudrais, certes, que vous parliez tous en langues, mais plus encore que vous prophétisiez;car celui qui prophétise l'emporte sur celui qui parle en langues, à moins que ce dernier n'interprète, pour quel'assemblée en tire édification.	5 While I should like you all to speak in tongues, I would much rather you could prophesy; since thosewho prophesy are of greater importance than those who speak in tongues, unless they can interpret what theysay so that the church is built up by it.
6 Et maintenant, frères, supposons que je vienne chez vous et vous parle en langues, en quoivous serai-je utile, si ma parole ne vous apporte ni révélation, ni science, ni prophétie, ni enseignement?	6 Now suppose, brothers, I come to you and speak in tongues, what good shal I do you if my speakingprovides no revelation or knowledge or prophecy or instruction?
7 Ainsi en est-il des instruments de musique, flûte ou cithare; s'ils ne donnent pasdistinctement les notes, comment saura-t-on ce que joue la flûte ou la cithare?	7 It is the same with an inanimate musical instrument. If it does not make any distinction between notes,how can one recognise what is being played on flute or lyre?
8 Et si la trompette n'émet qu'un son confus, qui se préparera au combat?	8 If the trumpet sounds a cal which is unrecognisable, who is going to get ready for the attack?
9 Ainsi de vous: si votre langue n'émet pas de parole intelligible, comment saura-t-on ce quevous dites? Vous parlerez en l'air.	9 It is the same with you: if you do not use your tongue to produce speech that can be readilyunderstood, how can anyone know what you are saying? You will be talking to the air.
10 Il y a, de par le monde, je ne sais combien d'espèces de langages, et rien n'est sans langage.	10 However many the languages used in the world, al of them use sound;
11 Si donc j'ignore la valeur du langage, je ferai l'effet d'un Barbare à celui qui parle, et celuiqui parle me fera, à moi, l'effet d'un Barbare.	11 but if I do not understand the meaning of the sound, I am a barbarian to the person who is speaking,and the speaker is a barbarian to me.
12 Ainsi de vous: puisque vous aspirez aux dons spirituels, cherchez à les avoir en abondancepour l'édification de l'assemblée.	12 So with you, as you are eager to have spiritual powers, aim to be rich in those which build up thecommunity.
13 C'est pourquoi celui qui parle en langue doit prier pour pouvoir interpréter.	13 That is why anybody who speaks in a tongue must pray that he may be given the interpretation.
14 Car, si je prie en langue, mon esprit est en prière, mais mon intelligence n'en retire aucunfruit.	14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit may be praying but my mind derives no fruit from it.
15 Que faire donc? Je prierai avec l'esprit, mais je prierai aussi avec l'intelligence. Je dirai unhymne avec l'esprit, mais je le dirai aussi avec l'intelligence.	15 What then? I shal pray with the spirit, but I shall pray with the mind as wel : I shall sing praises withthe spirit and I shal sing praises with the mind as well.
16 Autrement, si tu ne bénis qu'en esprit, comment celui qui a rang de non-initié répondra-t-il"Amen!" à ton action de grâces, puisqu'il ne sait pas ce que tu dis?	16 Otherwise, if you say your blessing only with the spirit, how is the uninitiated person going to answer'Amen' to your thanksgiving, without understanding what you are saying?
17 Ton action de grâces est belle, certes, mais l'autre n'en est pas édifié.	17 You may be making your thanksgiving wel , but the other person is not built up at al .
18 Je rends grâces à Dieu de ce que je parle en langues plus que vous tous;	18 I thank God that I speak with tongues more than any of you;
19 mais dans l'assemblée, j'aime mieux dire cinq paroles avec mon intelligence, pour instruireaussi les autres, que 10.000 en langue.	19 al the same, when I am in the assembly I would rather say five words with my mind, to instructothers as wel , than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20 Frères, ne soyez pas des enfants pour le jugement; des petits enfants pour la malice, soit,mais pour le jugement soyez des hommes faits.	20 Brothers, do not remain children in your thinking; infants in wickedness-agreed, but in your thinkinggrown-ups.
21 Il est écrit dans la Loi: C'est par des hommes d'une autre langue et par des lèvres d'étrangersque je parlerai à ce peuple, et même ainsi ils ne m'écouteront pas, dit le Seigneur.	21 It says in the written Law: In strange tongues and in a foreign language I wil talk to this nation, andeven so they will refuse to listen, says the Lord.
22 Ainsi donc, les langues servent de signe non pour les croyants, mais pour les infidèles: laprophétie, elle, n'est pas pour les infidèles mais pour les croyants.	22 So then, strange languages are significant not for believers, but for unbelievers; whereas on theother hand, prophesying is not for unbelievers, but for believers.
23 Si donc l'Eglise entière se réunit ensemble et que tous parlent en langues, et qu'il entre desnon-initiés ou des infidèles, ne diront-ils pas que vous êtes fous?	23 Suppose that, if the whole congregation were meeting and al of them speaking in tongues, andsome uninitiated people or unbelievers were to come in, don't you think they would say that you were all raving?
24 Mais si tous prophétisent et qu'il entre un infidèle ou un non-initié, le voilà repris par tous,jugé par tous;	24 But if you were al prophesying when an unbeliever or someone uninitiated came in, he would findhimself put to the test by al and judged by al
25 les secrets de son coeur sont dévoilés, et ainsi, tombant sur la face, il adorera Dieu, endéclarant que Dieu est réellement parmi vous.	25 and the secrets of his heart revealed; and so he would fal down on his face and worship God,declaring that God is indeed among you.
26 Que conclure, frères? Lorsque vous vous assemblez, chacun peut avoir un cantique, unenseignement, une révélation, un discours en langue, une interprétation. Que tout se passe de manière à édifier.	26 Then what should it be like, brothers? When you come together each of you brings a psalm or someinstruction or a revelation, or speaks in a tongue or gives an interpretation. Let al these things be done in a waythat wil build up the community.
27 Parle-t-on en langue? Que ce soit le fait de deux ou de trois tout au plus, et à tour de rôle; etqu'il y ait un interprète.	27 If there are to be any people speaking in a tongue, then let there be only two, or at the most three,and those one at a time, and let one of these interpret.
28 S'il n'y a pas d'interprète, qu'on se taise dans l'assemblée; qu'on se parle à soi-même et àDieu.	28 If there is no interpreter, then let each of them be quiet in the assembly, and speak only to himselfand God.
29 Pour les prophètes, qu'il y en ait deux ou trois à parler, et que les autres jugent.	29 Let two prophets, or three, speak while the rest weigh their words;
30 Si un autre qui est assis a une révélation, que le premier se taise.	30 and if a revelation comes to someone else who is sitting by, the speaker should stop speaking.
31 Car vous pouvez tous prophétiser à tour de rôle, pour que tous soient instruits et tousexhortés.	31 You can al prophesy, but one at a time, then al wil learn something and al receive encouragement.
32 Les esprits des prophètes sont soumis aux prophètes;	32 The prophetic spirit is to be under the prophets' control,
33 car Dieu n'est pas un Dieu de désordre, mais de paix. Comme dans toutes les Eglises dessaints,	33 for God is a God not of disorder but of peace. As in al the churches of God's holy people,
34 que les femmes se taisent dans les assemblées, car il ne leur est pas permis de prendre laparole; qu'elles se tiennent dans la soumission, selon que la Loi même le dit.	34 women are to remain quiet in the assemblies, since they have no permission to speak: theirs is asubordinate part, as the Law itself says.
35 Si elles veulent s'instruire sur quelque point, qu'elles interrogent leur mari à la maison; car ilest inconvenant pour une femme de parler dans une assemblée.	35 If there is anything they want to know, they should ask their husbands at home: it is shameful for awoman to speak in the assembly.
36 Est-ce de chez vous qu'est sortie la parole de Dieu? Ou bien, est-ce à vous seuls qu'elle estparvenue?	36 Do you real y think that you are the source of the word of God? Or that you are the only people towhom it has come?
37 Si quelqu'un croit être prophète ou inspiré par l'Esprit, qu'il reconnaisse en ce que je vousécris un commandement du Seigneur.	37 Anyone who claims to be a prophet, or to have any spiritual powers must recognise that what I amwriting to you is a commandment from the Lord.
38 S'il l'ignore, c'est qu'il est ignoré.	38 If anyone does not recognise this, it is because that person is not recognised himself.
39 Ainsi donc, mes frères, aspirez au don de prophétie, et n'empêchez pas de parler en langues.	39 So, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not suppress the gift of speaking in tongues.
40 Mais que tout se passe dignement et dans l'ordre.	40 But make sure that everything is done in a proper and orderly fashion.
