JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Saul, lui, approuvait ce meurtre. En ce jour-là, une violente persécution se déchaîna contre l'Eglise deJérusalem. Tous, à l'exception des apôtres, se dispersèrent dans les campagnes de Judée et de Samarie.	1 Saul approved of the killing. That day a bitter persecution started against the church in Jerusalem, andeveryone except the apostles scattered to the country districts of Judaea and Samaria.
2 Cependant des hommes dévots ensevelirent Etienne et firent sur lui de grandes lamentations.	2 There were some devout people, however, who buried Stephen and made great mourning for him.
3 Quant à Saul, il ravageait l'Eglise; allant de maison en maison, il en arrachait hommes et femmes etles jetait en prison.	3 Saul then began doing great harm to the church; he went from house to house arresting both men andwomen and sending them to prison.
4 Ceux-là donc qui avaient été dispersés s'en allèrent de lieu en lieu en annonçant la parole de la BonneNouvelle.	4 Once they had scattered, they went from place to place preaching the good news.
5 C'est ainsi que Philippe, qui était descendu dans une ville de la Samarie, y proclamait le Christ.	5 And Philip went to a Samaritan town and proclaimed the Christ to them.
6 Les foules unanimes s'attachaient à ses enseignements, car tous entendaient parler des signes qu'ilopérait, ou les voyaient.	6 The people unanimously welcomed the message Philip preached, because they had heard of themiracles he worked and because they saw them for themselves.
7 De beaucoup de possédés, en effet, les esprits impurs sortaient en poussant de grands cris. Nombre deparalytiques et d'impotents furent également guéris.	7 For unclean spirits came shrieking out of many who were possessed, and several paralytics and crippleswere cured.
8 Et la joie fut vive en cette ville.	8 As a result there was great rejoicing in that town.
9 Or il y avait déjà auparavant dans la ville un homme appelé Simon, qui exerçait la magie et jetait lepeuple de Samarie dans l'émerveillement. Il se disait quelqu'un de grand,	9 Now a man cal ed Simon had for some time been practising magic arts in the town and astounded theSamaritan people. He had given it out that he was someone momentous,
10 et tous, du plus petit au plus grand, s'attachaient à lui. "Cet homme, disait-on, est la Puissance deDieu, celle qu'on appelle la Grande."	10 and everyone believed in him; eminent citizens and ordinary people alike had declared, 'He is thedivine power that is called Great.'
11 Ils s'attachaient donc à lui, parce qu'il y avait longtemps qu'il les tenait émerveillés par ses sortilèges.	11 He had this fol owing because for a considerable period they had been astounded by his wizardry.
12 Mais quand ils eurent cru à Philippe qui leur annonçait la Bonne Nouvelle du Royaume de Dieu etdu nom de Jésus Christ, ils se firent baptiser, hommes et femmes.	12 But when they came to accept Philip's preaching of the good news about the kingdom of God and thename of Jesus Christ, they were baptised, both men and women,
13 Simon lui-même crut à son tour; ayant reçu le baptême, il ne lâchait plus Philippe, et il était dansl'émerveillement à la vue des signes et des grands miracles qui s'opéraient sous ses yeux.	13 and even Simon himself became a believer. After his baptism Simon went round constantly with Philipand was astonished when he saw the wonders and great miracles that took place.
14 Apprenant que la Samarie avait accueilli la parole de Dieu, les apôtres qui étaient à Jérusalem yenvoyèrent Pierre et Jean.	14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peterand John to them,
15 Ceux-ci descendirent donc chez les Samaritains et prièrent pour eux, afin que l'Esprit Saint leur fûtdonné.	15 and they went down there and prayed for them to receive the Holy Spirit,
16 Car il n'était encore tombé sur aucun d'eux; ils avaient seulement été baptisés au nom du SeigneurJésus.	16 for as yet he had not come down on any of them: they had only been baptised in the name of the LordJesus.
17 Alors Pierre et Jean se mirent à leur imposer les mains, et ils recevaient l'Esprit Saint.	17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
18 Mais quand Simon vit que l'Esprit Saint était donné par l'imposition des mains des apôtres, il leuroffrit de l'argent.	18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offeredthem money,
19 "Donnez-moi, dit-il, ce pouvoir à moi aussi: que celui à qui j'imposerai les mains reçoive l'EspritSaint."	19 with the words, 'Give me the same power so that anyone I lay my hands on wil receive the Holy Spirit.'
20 Mais Pierre lui répliqua: "Périsse ton argent, et toi avec lui, puisque tu as cru acheter le don de Dieuà prix d'argent!	20 Peter answered, 'May your silver be lost for ever, and you with it, for thinking that money could buywhat God has given for nothing!
21 Dans cette affaire il n'y a pour toi ni part ni héritage, car ton coeur n'est pas droit devant Dieu.	21 You have no share, no part, in this: God can see how your heart is warped.
22 Repens-toi donc de ton mauvais dessein et prie le Seigneur: peut-être cette pensée de ton coeur tesera-t-elle pardonnée;	22 Repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that this scheme of yours may be forgiven;
23 car tu es, je le vois, dans l'amertume du fiel et les liens de l'iniquité."	23 it is plain to me that you are held in the bitterness of gal and the chains of sin.'
24 Simon répondit: "Intercédez vous-mêmes pour moi auprès du Seigneur, afin que rien ne m'arrive dece que vous venez de dire."	24 Simon replied, 'Pray to the Lord for me yourselves so that none of the things you have spoken aboutmay happen to me.'
25 Pour eux, après avoir rendu témoignage et annoncé la parole du Seigneur, ils retournèrent àJérusalem en évangélisant de nombreux villages samaritains.	25 Having given their testimony and proclaimed the word of the Lord, they went back to Jerusalem,preaching the good news to a number of Samaritan vil ages.
26 L'Ange du Seigneur s'adressa à Philippe et lui dit: "Pars et va-t'en, à l'heure de midi, sur la route quidescend de Jérusalem à Gaza; elle est déserte."	26 The angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, 'Set out at noon and go along the road that leads fromJerusalem down to Gaza, the desert road.'
27 Il partit donc et s'y rendit. Justement un Ethiopien, un eunuque, haut fonctionnaire de Candace, reined'Ethiopie, et surintendant de tous ses trésors, qui était venu en pèlerinage à Jérusalem,	27 So he set off on his journey. Now an Ethiopian had been on pilgrimage to Jerusalem; he was a eunuchand an officer at the court of the kandake, or queen, of Ethiopia; he was her chief treasurer.
28 s'en retournait, assis sur son char, en lisant le prophète Isaïe.	28 He was now on his way home; and as he sat in his chariot he was reading the prophet Isaiah.
29 L'Esprit dit à Philippe: "Avance et rattrape ce char."	29 The Spirit said to Philip, 'Go up and join that chariot.'
30 Philippe y courut, et il entendit que l'eunuque lisait le prophète Isaïe. Il lui demanda: "Comprends-tudonc ce que tu lis" --	30 When Philip ran up, he heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, 'Do you understand what youare reading?'
31 "Et comment le pourrais-je, dit-il, si personne ne me guide?" Et il invita Philippe à monter et às'asseoir près de lui.	31 He replied, 'How could I, unless I have someone to guide me?' So he urged Philip to get in and sit byhis side.
32 Le passage de l'Ecriture qu'il lisait était le suivant: Comme une brebis il a été conduit à la boucherie;comme un agneau muet devant celui qui le tond, ainsi il n'ouvre pas la bouche.	32 Now the passage of scripture he was reading was this: Like a lamb led to the slaughter-house, like asheep dumb in front of its shearers, he never opens his mouth.
33 Dans son abaissement la justice lui a été déniée. Sa postérité, qui la racontera? Car sa vie estretranchée de la terre.	33 In his humiliation fair judgement was denied him. Who wil ever talk about his descendants, since hislife on earth has been cut short?
34 S'adressant à Philippe, l'eunuque lui dit: "Je t'en prie, de qui le prophète dit-il cela? De lui-même oude quelqu'un d'autre?"	34 The eunuch addressed Philip and said, 'Tel me, is the prophet referring to himself or someone else?'
35 Philippe prit alors la parole et, partant de ce texte de l'Ecriture, lui annonça la Bonne Nouvelle deJésus.	35 Starting, therefore, with this text of scripture Philip proceeded to explain the good news of Jesus to him.
36 Chemin faisant, ils arrivèrent à un point d'eau, et l'eunuque dit: "Voici de l'eau. Qu'est-ce quiempêche que je sois baptisé?"	36 Further along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, 'Look,is some water; is thereanything to prevent my being baptised?'

38 Et il fit arrêter le char. Ils descendirent tous deux dans l'eau, Philippe avec l'eunuque, et il le baptisa.	38 He ordered the chariot to stop, then Philip and the eunuch both went down into the water and hebaptised him.
39 Mais, quand ils furent remontés de l'eau, l'Esprit du Seigneur enleva Philippe, et l'eunuque ne le vitplus. Et il poursuivit son chemin tout joyeux.	39 But after they had come up out of the water again Philip was taken away by the Spirit of the Lord, andthe eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing.
40 Quant à Philippe, il se trouva à Azot; continuant sa route, il annonçait la Bonne Nouvelle dans toutesles villes qu'il traversait, jusqu'à ce qu'il arrivât à Césarée.	40 Philip appeared in Azotus and continued his journey, proclaiming the good news in every town as faras Caesarea.
