JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Ils parlaient encore au peuple quand survinrent les prêtres, le commandant du Temple et lesSadducéens,	1 While they were stil talking to the people the priests came up to them, accompanied by the captain ofthe Temple and the Sadducees.
2 contrariés de les voir enseigner le peuple et annoncer en la personne de Jésus la résurrection desmorts.	2 They were extremely annoyed at their teaching the people the resurrection from the dead by proclaimingthe resurrection of Jesus.
3 Ils mirent la main sur eux et les emprisonnèrent jusqu'au lendemain, car déjà le soir tombait.	3 They arrested them, and, as it was already late, they kept them in prison till the next day.
4 Cependant beaucoup de ceux qui avaient entendu la parole embrassèrent la foi, et le nombre desfidèles, en ne comptant que les hommes, fut d'environ 5.000.	4 But many of those who had listened to their message became believers; the total number of men hadnow risen to something like five thousand.
5 Le lendemain les chefs des Juifs, les anciens et les scribes se rassemblèrent à Jérusalem.	5 It happened that the next day the rulers, elders and scribes held a meeting in Jerusalem
6 Il y avait là Anne le grand prêtre, Caïphe, Jonathan, Alexandre et tous les membres des famillespontificales.	6 with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, Jonathan, Alexander and al the members of the high-priestlyfamilies.
7 Ils firent comparaître les apôtres et se mirent à les questionner: "Par quel pouvoir ou par quel nomavez-vous fait cela, vous autres?"	7 They made the prisoners stand in the middle and began to interrogate them, 'By what power, and bywhose name have you men done this?'
8 Alors Pierre, rempli de l'Esprit Saint, leur dit: "Chefs du peuple et anciens,	8 Then Peter, fil ed with the Holy Spirit, addressed them, 'Rulers of the people, and elders!
9 puisqu'aujourd'hui nous avons à répondre en justice du bien fait à un infirme et du moyen par lequel ila été guéri,	9 If you are questioning us today about an act of kindness to a cripple and asking us how he was healed,
10 sachez-le bien, vous tous, ainsi que tout le peuple d'Israël: c'est par le nom de Jésus Christ leNazôréen, celui que vous, vous avez crucifié, et que Dieu a ressuscité des morts, c'est par son nom et par nulautre que cet homme se présente guéri devant vous.	10 you must know, all of you, and the whole people of Israel, that it is by the name of Jesus Christ theNazarene, whom you crucified, and God raised from the dead, by this name and by no other that this manstands before you cured.
11 C'est lui la pierre que vous, les bâtisseurs, avez dédaignée, et qui est devenue la pierre d'angle.	11 This is the stone which you, the builders, rejected but which has become the cornerstone. Only in himis there salvation;
12 Car il n'y a pas sous le ciel d'autre nom donné aux hommes, par lequel nous devions être sauvés."	12 for of al the names in the world given to men, this is the only one by which we can be saved.'
13 Considérant l'assurance de Pierre et de Jean et se rendant compte que c'étaient des gens sansinstruction ni culture, les sanhédrites étaient dans l'étonnement. Ils reconnaissaient bien en eux ceux qui étaientavec Jésus;	13 They were astonished at the fearlessness shown by Peter and John, considering that they wereuneducated laymen; and they recognised them as associates of Jesus;
14 en même temps ils voyaient, debout auprès d'eux, l'homme qui avait été guéri; aussi n'avaient-ils rienà répliquer.	14 but when they saw the man who had been cured standing by their side, they could find no answer.
15 Ils les firent alors sortir du Sanhédrin et se mirent à délibérer entre eux.	15 So they ordered them to stand outside while the Sanhedrin had a private discussion.
16 Ils disaient: "Qu'allons-nous faire à ces gens-là? Qu'un signe notoire ait été opéré par eux, c'est tropclair pour tous les habitants de Jérusalem, et nous ne pouvons le nier.	16 'What are we going to do with these men?' they asked. 'It is obvious to everybody in Jerusalem that anotable miracle has been worked through them, and we cannot deny it.
17 Mais pour que cela ne se répande pas davantage dans le peuple, empêchons-les par des menaces deparler désormais à qui que ce soit en ce nom-là."	17 But to stop the whole thing spreading any further among the people, let us threaten them against everspeaking to anyone in this name again.'
18 Ils les rappelèrent donc et leur défendirent de souffler mot et d'enseigner au nom de Jésus.	18 So they cal ed them in and gave them a warning on no account to make statements or to teach in thename of Jesus.
19 Mais Pierre et Jean de leur rétorquer: "S'il est juste aux yeux de Dieu de vous obéir plutôt qu'à Dieu,à vous d'en juger.	19 But Peter and John retorted, 'You must judge whether in God's eyes it is right to listen to you and not toGod.
20 Nous ne pouvons pas, quant à nous, ne pas publier ce que nous avons vu et entendu."	20 We cannot stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard.'
21 Cependant, après de nouvelles menaces, ils les relâchèrent, ne voyant pas comment les punir, à causedu peuple: car tout le monde glorifiait Dieu de ce qui s'était passé.	21 The court repeated the threats and then released them; they could not think of any way to punish them,since al the people were giving glory to God for what had happened.
22 L'homme guéri miraculeusement avait en effet plus de 40 ans.	22 The man who had been miraculously cured was over forty years old.
23 Une fois relâchés, ils se rendirent auprès des leurs et rapportèrent tout ce que les grands prêtres et lesanciens leur avaient dit.	23 As soon as they were released they went to the community and told them everything the chief priestsand elders had said to them.
24 A ce récit, d'un seul élan, ils élevèrent la voix vers Dieu et dirent: "Maître, c'est toi qui as fait le ciel,la terre, la mer et tout ce qui s'y trouve;	24 When they heard it they lifted up their voice to God with one heart. 'Master,' they prayed, 'it is you who made sky and earth and sea, and everything in them;
25 c'est toi qui as dit par l'Esprit Saint et par la bouche de notre père David, ton serviteur: Pourquoi cettearrogance chez les nations, ces vains projets chez les peuples?	25 it is you who said through the Holy Spirit and speaking through our ancestor David, your servant: Whythis uproar among the nations, this impotent muttering of the peoples?
26 Les rois de la terre se sont mis en campagne et les magistrats se sont rassemblés de concert contre leSeigneur et contre son Oint.	26 Kings on earth take up position, princes plot together against the Lord and his Anointed.
27 Oui vraiment, ils se sont rassemblés dans cette ville contre ton saint serviteur Jésus, que tu as oint,Hérode et Ponce Pilate avec les nations païennes et les peuples d'Israël,	27 'This is what has come true: in this very city Herod and Pontius Pilate plotted together with the gentilenations and the peoples of Israel, against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed,
28 pour accomplir tout ce que, dans ta puissance et ta sagesse, tu avais déterminé par avance.	28 to bring about the very thing that you in your strength and your wisdom had predetermined shouldhappen.
29 A présent donc, Seigneur, considère leurs menaces et, afin de permettre à tes serviteurs d'annoncer taparole en toute assurance,	29 And now, Lord, take note of their threats and help your servants to proclaim your message with alfearlessness,
30 étends la main pour opérer des guérisons, signes et prodiges par le nom de ton saint serviteur Jésus."	30 by stretching out your hand to heal and to work miracles and marvels through the name of your holyservant Jesus.'
31 Tandis qu'ils priaient, l'endroit où ils se trouvaient réunis trembla; tous furent alors remplis du SaintEsprit et se mirent à annoncer la parole de Dieu avec assurance.	31 As they prayed, the house where they were assembled rocked. From this time they were all fil ed withthe Holy Spirit and began to proclaim the word of God fearlessly.
32 La multitude des croyants n'avait qu'un coeur et qu'une âme. Nul ne disait sien ce qui lui appartenait,mais entre eux tout était commun.	32 The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed private ownership of anypossessions, as everything they owned was held in common.
33 Avec beaucoup de puissance, les apôtres rendaient témoignage à la résurrection du Seigneur Jésus, etils jouissaient tous d'une grande faveur.	33 The apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power, and they wereal accorded great respect.
34 Aussi parmi eux nul n'était dans le besoin; car tous ceux qui possédaient des terres ou des maisonsles vendaient, apportaient le prix de la vente	34 None of their members was ever in want, as al those who owned land or houses would sel them, andbring the money from the sale of them,
35 et le déposaient aux pieds des apôtres. On distribuait alors à chacun suivant ses besoins.	35 to present it to the apostles; it was then distributed to any who might be in need.
36 Joseph, surnommé par les apôtres Barnabé (ce qui veut dire fils d'encouragement), lévite originairede Chypre,	36 There was a Levite of Cypriot origin called Joseph whom the apostles surnamed Barnabas (whichmeans 'son of encouragement').
37 possédait un champ; il le vendit, apporta l'argent et le déposa aux pieds des apôtres.	37 He owned a piece of land and he sold it and brought the money and presented it to the apostles.
