JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Après cela, Jésus parcourait la Galilée; il n'avait pas pouvoir de circuler en Judée, parce que les Juifscherchaient à le tuer.	1 After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.
2 Or la fête juive des Tentes était proche.	2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,
3 Ses frères lui dirent donc: "Passe d'ici en Judée, que tes disciples aussi voient les oeuvres que tu fais:	3 his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;
4 on n'agit pas en secret, quand on veut être en vue. Puisque tu fais ces choses-là, manifeste-toi aumonde."	4 no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'
5 Pas même ses frères en effet ne croyaient en lui.	5 Not even his brothers had faith in him.
6 Jésus leur dit alors: "Mon temps n'est pas encore venu, tandis que le vôtre est toujours prêt.	6 Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.
7 Le monde ne peut pas vous haïr; mais moi, il me hait, parce que je témoigne que ses oeuvres sontmauvaises.	7 The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.
8 Vous, montez à la fête; moi, je ne monte pas à cette fête, parce que mon temps n'est pas encoreaccompli."	8 Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'
9 Cela dit, il resta en Galilée.	9 Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.
10 Mais quand ses frères furent montés à la fête, alors il monta lui aussi, pas au grand jour, mais ensecret.	10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.
11 Les Juifs le cherchaient donc pendant la fête et disaient: "Où est-il?"	11 At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.
12 On chuchotait beaucoup sur son compte dans les foules. Les uns disaient: "C'est un homme de bien."D'autres disaient: "Non, il égare la foule."	12 There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'
13 Pourtant personne ne s'exprimait ouvertement à son sujet par peur des Juifs.	13 Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.
14 On était déjà au milieu de la fête, lorsque Jésus monta au Temple et se mit à enseigner.	14 When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.
15 Les Juifs, étonnés, disaient: "Comment connaît-il les lettres sans avoir étudié?"	15 The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'
16 Jésus leur répondit: "Ma doctrine n'est pas de moi, mais de celui qui m'a envoyé.	16 Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;
17 Si quelqu'un veut faire sa volonté, il reconnaîtra si ma doctrine est de Dieu ou si je parle de moi-même.	17 anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.
18 Celui qui parle de lui-même cherche sa propre gloire; mais celui qui cherche la gloire de celui qui l'aenvoyé, celui-là est véridique et il n'y a pas en lui d'imposture.	18 When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.
19 Moïse ne vous a-t-il pas donné la Loi? Et aucun de vous ne la pratique, la Loi! Pourquoi cherchez-vous à me tuer?"	19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!
20 La foule répondit: "Tu as un démon. Qui cherche à te tuer?"	20 The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'
21 Jésus leur répondit: "Pour une seule oeuvre que j'ai faite, vous voilà tous étonnés.	21 Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.
22 Moïse vous a donné la circoncision - non qu'elle vienne de Moïse mais des patriarches - et, le jour dusabbat, vous la pratiquez sur un homme.	22 Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.
23 Alors, un homme reçoit la circoncision, le jour du sabbat, pour que ne soit pas enfreinte la Loi deMoïse, et vous vous indignez contre moi parce que j'ai guéri un homme tout entier le jour du sabbat?	23 Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?
24 Cessez de juger sur l'apparence; jugez selon la justice."	24 Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'
25 Certains, des gens de Jérusalem, disaient: "N'est-ce pas lui qu'ils cherchent à tuer?	25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?
26 Et le voilà qui parle ouvertement sans qu'ils lui disent rien! Est-ce que vraiment les autorités auraientreconnu qu'il est le Christ?	26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?
27 Mais lui, nous savons d'où il est, tandis que le Christ, à sa venue, personne ne saura d'où il est."	27 Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'
28 Alors Jésus, enseignant dans le Temple, s'écria: "Vous me connaissez et vous savez d'où je suis; etpourtant ce n'est pas de moi-même que je suis venu, mais il m'envoie vraiment, celui qui m'a envoyé. Vous, vousne le connaissez pas.	28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,
29 Moi, je le connais, parce que je viens d'auprès de lui et c'est lui qui m'a envoyé."	29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.
30 Ils cherchaient alors à le saisir, mais personne ne porta la main sur lui, parce que son heure n'était pasencore venue.	30 They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.
31 Dans la foule, beaucoup crurent en lui et disaient: "Le Christ, quand il viendra, fera-t-il plus de signesque n'en a fait celui-ci?	31 There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'
32 Ces rumeurs de la foule à son sujet parvinrent aux oreilles des Pharisiens. Ils envoyèrent des gardespour le saisir.	32 Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.
33 Jésus dit alors: "Pour un peu de temps encore je suis avec vous, et je m'en vais vers celui qui m'aenvoyé.	33 Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.
34 Vous me chercherez, et ne me trouverez pas; et où je suis, vous ne pouvez pas venir."	34 You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.
35 Les Juifs se dirent entre eux: "Où va-t-il aller, que nous ne le trouverons pas? Va-t-il rejoindre ceuxqui sont dispersés chez les Grecs et enseigner les Grecs?	35 So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?
36 Que signifie cette parole qu'il a dite: Vous me chercherez et ne me trouverez pas; et où je suis, vous nepouvez pas venir?"	36 'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '
37 Le dernier jour de la fête, le grand jour, Jésus, debout, s'écria: "Si quelqu'un a soif, qu'il vienne à moi,et qu'il boive,	37 On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!
38 celui qui croit en moi!" selon le mot de l'Ecriture: De son sein couleront des fleuves d'eau vive.	38 Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '
39 Il parlait de l'Esprit que devaient recevoir ceux qui avaient cru en lui; car il n'y avait pas encored'Esprit, parce que Jésus n'avait pas encore été glorifié.	39 He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40 Dans la foule, plusieurs, qui avaient entendu ces paroles, disaient: "C'est vraiment lui le prophète!"	40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'
41 D'autres disaient: "C'est le Christ!" Mais d'autres disaient: "Est-ce de la Galilée que le Christ doitvenir?	41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?
42 L'Ecriture n'a-t-elle pas dit que c'est de la descendance de David et de Bethléem, le village où étaitDavid, que doit venir le Christ?"	42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'
43 Une scission se produisit donc dans la foule, à cause de lui.	43 So the people could not agree about him.
44 Certains d'entre eux voulaient le saisir, mais personne ne porta la main sur lui.	44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.
45 Les gardes revinrent donc trouver les grands prêtres et les Pharisiens. Ceux-ci leur dirent: "Pourquoine l'avez-vous pas amené?"	45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'
46 Les gardes répondirent: "Jamais homme n'a parlé comme cela!"	46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'
47 Les Pharisiens répliquèrent: "Vous aussi, vous êtes-vous laissé égarer?	47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?
48 Est-il un des notables qui ait cru en lui? Ou un des Pharisiens?	48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?
49 Mais cette foule qui ne connaît pas la Loi, ce sont des maudits!"	49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'
50 Nicodème, l'un d'entre eux, celui qui était venu trouver Jésus précédemment, leur dit:	50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,
51 "Notre Loi juge-t-elle un homme sans d'abord l'entendre et savoir ce qu'il fait!"	51 'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'
52 Ils lui répondirent: "Es-tu de la Galilée, toi aussi? Etudie! Tu verras que ce n'est pas de la Galilée quesurgit le prophète."	52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'
53 Et ils s'en allèrent chacun chez soi.	53 They al went home,
