Évangile selon Matthieu 21

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Quand ils approchèrent de Jérusalem et arrivèrent en vue de Bethphagé, au mont des Oliviers,alors Jésus envoya deux disciples	1 When they were near Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, then Jesus senttwo disciples,
2 en leur disant: "Rendez-vous au village qui est en face de vous; et aussitôt vous trouverez, àl'attache, une ânesse avec son ânon près d'elle; détachez-la et amenez-les-moi.	2 saying to them, 'Go to the village facing you, and you wil at once find a tethered donkey and a coltwith her. Untie them and bring them to me.
3 Et si quelqu'un vous dit quelque chose, vous direz: Le Seigneur en a besoin, mais aussitôt il lesrenverra."	3 If anyone says anything to you, you are to say, "The Master needs them and wil send them back atonce." '
4 Ceci advint pour que s'accomplît l'oracle du prophète:	4 This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet:
5 Dites à la fille de Sion: Voici que ton Roi vient à toi; modeste, il monte une ânesse, et un ânon,petit d'une bête de somme.	5 Say to the daughter of Zion: Look, your king is approaching, humble and riding on a donkey and on acolt, the foal of a beast of burden.
6 Les disciples allèrent donc et, faisant comme leur avait ordonné Jésus,	6 So the disciples went and did as Jesus had told them.
7 ils amenèrent l'ânesse et l'ânon. Puis ils disposèrent sur eux leurs manteaux et Jésus s'assit dessus.	7 They brought the donkey and the colt, then they laid their cloaks on their backs and he took his seaton them.
8 Alors les gens, en très nombreuse foule, étendirent leurs manteaux sur le chemin; d'autrescoupaient des branches aux arbres et en jonchaient le chemin.	8 Great crowds of people spread their cloaks on the road, while others were cutting branches from thetrees and spreading them in his path.
9 Les foules qui marchaient devant lui et celles qui suivaient criaient: "Hosanna au fils de David!Béni soit celui qui vient au nom du Seigneur! Hosanna au plus haut des cieux!"	9 The crowds who went in front of him and those who fol owed were al shouting: Hosanna to the son ofDavid! Blessed is he who is coming in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heavens!
10 Quand il entra dans Jérusalem, toute la ville fut agitée. "Qui est-ce?" Disait-on,	10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil as people asked, 'Who is this?'
11 et les foules disaient: "C'est le prophète Jésus, de Nazareth en Galilée."	11 and the crowds answered, 'This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.'
12 Puis Jésus entra dans le Temple et chassa tous les vendeurs et acheteurs qui s'y trouvaient: ilculbuta les tables des changeurs, ainsi que les sièges des marchands de colombes.	12 Jesus then went into the Temple and drove out al those who were selling and buying there; he upsetthe tables of the money-changers and the seats of the dove-sel ers.
13 Et il leur dit: "Il est écrit: Ma maison sera appelée une maison de prière. Mais vous, vous enfaites un repaire de brigands!"	13 He said to them, 'According to scripture, my house wil be cal ed a house of prayer; but you areturning it into a bandits' den.'
14 Il y eut aussi des aveugles et des boiteux qui s'approchèrent de lui dans le Temple, et il lesguérit.	14 There were also blind and lame people who came to him in the Temple, and he cured them.
15 Voyant les prodiges qu'il venait d'accomplir et ces enfants qui criaient dans le Temple:"Hosanna au fils de David", les grands prêtres et les scribes furent indignés	15 At the sight of the wonderful things he did and of the children shouting, 'Hosanna to the son of David'in the Temple, the chief priests and the scribes were indignant and said to him,
16 et ils lui dirent: "Tu entends ce qu'ils disent, ceux-là" - "Parfaitement, leur dit Jésus; n'avez-vousjamais lu ce texte: De la bouche des tout-petits et des nourrissons, tu t'es ménagé une louange?"	16 'Do you hear what they are saying?' Jesus answered, 'Yes. Have you never read this: By the mouthsof children, babes in arms, you have made sure of praise?'
17 Et les laissant, il sortit de la ville pour aller à Béthanie, où il passa la nuit.	17 With that he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night.
18 Comme il rentrait en ville de bon matin, il eut faim.	18 As he was returning to the city in the early morning, he felt hungry.
19 Voyant un figuier près du chemin, il s'en approcha, mais n'y trouva rien que des feuilles. Il luidit alors: "Jamais plus tu ne porteras de fruit!" Et à l'instant même le figuier devint sec.	19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it and found nothing on it but leaves. And he said to it,'May you never bear fruit again,' and instantly the fig tree withered.
20 A cette vue, les disciples dirent tout étonnés: "Comment, en un instant, le figuier est-il devenusec?"	20 The disciples were amazed when they saw it and said, 'How is it that the fig tree withered instantly?'
21 Jésus leur répondit: "En vérité je vous le dis, si vous avez une foi qui n'hésite point, nonseulement vous ferez ce que je viens de faire au figuier, mais même si vous dites à cette montagne: Soulève-toiet jette-toi dans la mer, cela se fera.	21 Jesus answered, 'In truth I tel you, if you have faith and do not doubt at all, not only wil you do what Ihave done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, "Be pul ed up and thrown into the sea," it will be done.
22 Et tout ce que vous demanderez dans une prière pleine de foi, vous l'obtiendrez."	22 And if you have faith, everything you ask for in prayer, you wil receive.'
23 Il était entré dans le Temple et il enseignait, quand les grands prêtres et les anciens du peuples'approchèrent et lui dirent: "Par quelle autorité fais-tu cela? Et qui t'a donné cette autorité?"	23 He had gone into the Temple and was teaching, when the chief priests and the elders of the peoplecame to him and said, 'What authority have you for acting like this? And who gave you this authority?'
24 Jésus leur répondit: "De mon côté, je vais vous poser une question, une seule; si vous m'yrépondez, moi aussi je vous dirai par quelle autorité je fais cela.	24 In reply Jesus said to them, 'And I will ask you a question, just one; if you tell me the answer to it,then I wil tel you my authority for acting like this.
25 Le baptême de Jean, d'où était-il? Du Ciel ou des hommes?" Mais ils se faisaient en eux-mêmesce raisonnement: "Si nous disons: Du Ciel', il nous dira: Pourquoi donc n'avez-vous pas cru en lui?	25 John's baptism: what was its origin, heavenly or human?' And they argued this way amongthemselves, 'If we say heavenly, he wil retort to us, "Then why did you refuse to believe him?";
26 Et si nous disons: Des hommes, nous avons à craindre la foule, car tous tiennent Jean pour unprophète."	26 but if we say human, we have the people to fear, for they al hold that John was a prophet.'
27 Et ils firent à Jésus cette réponse: "Nous ne savons pas." De son côté il répliqua: "Moi non plus,je ne vous dis pas par quelle autorité je fais cela."	27 So their reply to Jesus was, 'We do not know.' And he retorted to them, 'Nor wil I tel you my authorityfor acting like this.'
28 "Mais dites-moi votre avis. Un homme avait deux enfants. S'adressant au premier, il dit: Monenfant, va-t'en aujourd'hui travailler à la vigne. --	28 'What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He went and said to the first, "My boy, go and work inthe vineyard today."
29 Je ne veux pas, répondit-il; ensuite pris de remords, il y alla.	29 He answered, "I will not go," but afterwards thought better of it and went.
30 S'adressant au second, il dit la même chose; l'autre répondit: Entendu, Seigneur, et il n'y allapoint.	30 The man then went and said the same thing to the second who answered, "Certainly, sir," but did notgo.
31 Lequel des deux a fait la volonté du père" - "Le premier", disent-ils. Jésus leur dit: "En vérité jevous le dis, les publicains et les prostituées arrivent avant vous au Royaume de Dieu.	31 Which of the two did the father's wil ?' They said, 'The first.' Jesus said to them, 'In truth I tel you, taxcol ectors and prostitutes are making their way into the kingdom of God before you.
32 En effet, Jean est venu à vous dans la voie de la justice, et vous n'avez pas cru en lui; lespublicains, eux, et les prostituées ont cru en lui; et vous, devant cet exemple, vous n'avez même pas eu unremords tardif qui vous fît croire en lui."	32 For John came to you, showing the way of uprightness, but you did not believe him, and yet the taxcol ectors and prostitutes did. Even after seeing that, you refused to think better of it and believe in him.
33 "Ecoutez une autre parabole. Un homme était propriétaire, et il planta une vigne; il l'entourad'une clôture, y creusa un pressoir et y bâtit une tour; puis il la loua à des vignerons et partit en voyage.	33 'Listen to another parable. There was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard; he fenced itround, dug a winepress in it and built a tower; then he leased it to tenants and went abroad.
34 Quand approcha le moment des fruits, il envoya ses serviteurs aux vignerons pour en recevoirles fruits.	34 When vintage time drew near he sent his servants to the tenants to col ect his produce.
35 Mais les vignerons se saisirent de ses serviteurs, battirent l'un, tuèrent l'autre, en lapidèrent untroisième.	35 But the tenants seized his servants, thrashed one, kil ed another and stoned a third.
36 De nouveau il envoya d'autres serviteurs, plus nombreux que les premiers, et ils les traitèrent demême.	36 Next he sent some more servants, this time a larger number, and they dealt with them in the sameway.
37 Finalement il leur envoya son fils, en se disant: Ils respecteront mon fils.	37 Final y he sent his son to them thinking, "They will respect my son."
38 Mais les vignerons, en voyant le fils, se dirent par-devers eux: Celui-ci est l'héritier: venez!tuons-le, que nous ayons son héritage.	38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, "This is the heir. Come on, let us kil himand take over his inheritance."
39 Et, le saisissant, ils le jetèrent hors de la vigne et le tuèrent.	39 So they seized him and threw him out of the vineyard and kil ed him.
40 Lors donc que viendra le maître de la vigne, que fera-t-il à ces vignerons-là?"	40 Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?'
41 Ils lui disent: "Il fera misérablement périr ces misérables, et il louera la vigne à d'autresvignerons, qui lui en livreront les fruits en leur temps."	41 They answered, 'He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to othertenants who wil deliver the produce to him at the proper time.'
42 Jésus leur dit: "N'avez-vous jamais lu dans les Ecritures: La pierre qu'avaient rejetée lesbâtisseurs c'est elle qui est devenue pierre de faîte; c'est là l'oeuvre du Seigneur et elle est admirable à nos yeux?	42 Jesus said to them, 'Have you never read in the scriptures: The stone which the builders rejected hasbecome the cornerstone; this is the Lord's doing and we marvel at it?
43 Aussi, je vous le dis: le Royaume de Dieu vous sera retiré pour être confié à un peuple qui luifera produire ses fruits."	43 'I tel you, then, that the kingdom of God wil be taken from you and given to a people who willproduce its fruit.'

45 Les grands prêtres et les Pharisiens, en entendant ses paraboles, comprirent bien qu'il les visait.	45 When they heard his parables, the chief priests and the scribes realised he was speaking aboutthem,
46 Mais, tout en cherchant à l'arrêter, ils eurent peur des foules, car elles le tenaient pour unprophète.	46 but though they would have liked to arrest him they were afraid of the crowds, who looked on him asa prophet.
