JERUSALEM	KING JAMES BIBLE
1 Voilà pourquoi ils ont été châtiés justement par des êtres semblables, et torturés par une multitudede bestioles.	1 Therefore by the like were they punished worthily, and by the multitude of beasts tormented.
2 Au lieu de ce châtiment, tu as accordé un bienfait à ton peuple pour satisfaire son ardent appétit,c'est un aliment merveilleux -- des cailles! -- que tu lui as préparé pour nourriture;	2 Instead of which punishment, dealing graciously with thine own people, thou preparedst for them meat of a strange taste, even quails to stir up their appetite:
3 si bien que, malgré leur désir de manger, ceux-là, devant l'aspect repoussant des bêtes envoyéescontre eux, perdirent jusqu'à leur appétit naturel, tandis que ceux-ci, après avoir un peu de temps connu ladisette, eurent en partage un aliment merveilleux.	3 To the end that they, desiring food, might for the ugly sight of the beasts sent among them lothe even that, which they must needs desire; but these, suffering penury for a short space, might be made partakers of a strange taste.
4 Car il fallait que sur ceux-là, les oppresseurs, s'abattît une irrémédiable disette; il suffisait à ceux-ciqu'on leur montrât comment leurs ennemis étaient torturés.	4 For it was requisite, that upon them exercising tyranny should come penury, which they could not avoid: but to these it should only be shewed how their enemies were tormented.
5 Et même lorsque s'abattit sur eux la fureur terrible de bêtes féroces, et qu'ils périssaient sous lesmorsures de serpents tortueux, ta colère ne dura pas jusqu'au bout;	5 For when the horrible fierceness of beasts came upon these, and they perished with the stings of crooked serpents, thy wrath endured not for ever:
6 mais c'est par manière d'avertissement et pour peu de temps qu'ils furent inquiétés, et ils avaient unsigne de salut pour leur rappeler le commandement de ta Loi,	6 But they were troubled for a small season, that they might be admonished, having a sign of salvation, to put them in remembrance of the commandment of thy law.
7 car celui qui se tournait vers lui était sauvé, non par ce qu'il avait sous les yeux, mais par toi, leSauveur de tous.	7 For he that turned himself toward it was not saved by the thing that he saw, but by thee, that art the Saviour of all.
8 Et par là tu prouvas à nos ennemis que c'est toi qui délivres de tout mal;	8 And in this thou madest thine enemies confess, that it is thou who deliverest from all evil:
9 eux, en effet, les morsures de sauterelles et de mouches les tuèrent, sans qu'on trouvât de remèdepour leur sauver la vie, car ils méritaient d'être châtiés par de telles bêtes,	9 For them the bitings of grasshoppers and flies killed, neither was there found any remedy for their life: for they were worthy to be punished by such.
10 tandis que tes fils, même les dents de serpents venimeux n'en eurent pas raison; car ta miséricordeleur vint en aide et les guérit.	10 But thy sons not the very teeth of venomous dragons overcame: for thy mercy was ever by them, and healed them.
11 Ainsi tes oracles leur étaient rappelés par des coups d'aiguillon, bien vite guéris, de peur que,tombés dans un profond oubli, ils ne fussent exclus de ta bienfaisance.	11 For they were pricked, that they should remember thy words; and were quickly saved, that not falling into deep forgetfulness, they might be continually mindful of thy goodness.
12 Et de fait, ce n'est ni herbe ni émollient qui leur rendit la santé, mais ta parole, Seigneur, elle quiguérit tout!	12 For it was neither herb, nor mollifying plaister, that restored them to health: but thy word, O Lord, which healeth all things.
13 Oui, c'est toi qui as pouvoir sur la vie et sur la mort, qui fais descendre aux portes de l'Hadès eten fais remonter.	13 For thou hast power of life and death: thou leadest to the gates of hell, and bringest up again.
14 L'homme, dans sa malice, peut bien tuer, mais il ne ramène pas le souffle une fois parti, et nelibère pas l'âme que l'Hadès a reçue.	14 A man indeed killeth through his malice: and the spirit, when it is gone forth, returneth not; neither the soul received up cometh again.
15 Il est impossible d'échapper à ta main.	15 But it is not possible to escape thine hand.
16 Les impies qui refusaient de te connaître furent fustigés par la force de ton bras; pluies insolites,grêle, averses inexorables les assaillirent, et le feu les consuma.	16 For the ungodly, that denied to know thee, were scourged by the strength of thine arm: with strange rains, hails, and showers, were they persecuted, that they could not avoid, and through fire were they consumed.
17 Car voici le plus étrange: dans l'eau, qui éteint tout, le feu n'avait que plus d'ardeur; l'univers eneffet combat pour les justes.	17 For, which is most to be wondered at, the fire had more force in the water, that quencheth all things: for the world fighteth for the righteous.
18 Tantôt en effet la flamme s'apaisait, de peur de brûler complètement les animaux envoyés contreles impies, et pour leur faire comprendre, à cette vue, qu'ils étaient poursuivis par un jugement de Dieu;	18 For sometime the flame was mitigated, that it might not burn up the beasts that were sent against the ungodly; but themselves might see and perceive that they were persecuted with the judgment of God.
19 tantôt, au sein même de l'eau, elle brûlait avec plus de force que le feu, pour détruire les produitsd'une terre inique.	19 And at another time it burneth even in the midst of water above the power of fire, that it might destroy the fruits of an unjust land.
20 Au contraire, c'est une nourriture d'anges que tu as donnée à ton peuple, et c'est un pain toutpréparé que, du ciel, tu leur as fourni inlassablement, un pain capable de procurer toutes les délices et desatisfaire tous les goûts;	20 Instead whereof thou feddest thine own people with angels' food, and didst send them from heaven bread prepared without their labour, able to content every man's delight, and agreeing to every taste.
21 Et la substance que tu donnais manifestait ta douceur envers tes enfants, et, s'accommodant augoût de celui qui la prenait, elle se changeait en ce que chacun voulait.	21 For thy sustenance declared thy sweetness unto thy children, and serving to the appetite of the eater, tempered itself to every man's liking.
22 Neige et glace supportaient le feu sans fondre: on saurait ainsi que c'était pour détruire lesrécoltes des ennemis, que le feu brûlait au milieu de la grêle et flamboyait sous la pluie,	22 But snow and ice endured the fire, and melted not, that they might know that fire burning in the hail, and sparkling in the rain, did destroy the fruits of the enemies.
23 tandis qu'au contraire, pour respecter la nourriture des justes, il oubliait jusqu'à sa propre vertu.	23 But this again did even forget his own strength, that the righteous might be nourished.
24 Car la création qui est à ton service, à toi, son Créateur, se tend à fond pour le châtiment desinjustes et se détend pour faire du bien à ceux qui se confient en toi,	24 For the creature that serveth thee, who art the Maker increaseth his strength against the unrighteous for their punishment, and abateth his strength for the benefit of such as put their trust in thee.
25 C'est pourquoi, alors aussi, en se changeant en tout, elle se mettait au service de ta libéralité,nourricière universelle, selon le désir de ceux qui étaient dans le besoin;	25 Therefore even then was it altered into all fashions, and was obedient to thy grace, that nourisheth all things, according to the desire of them that had need:
26 ainsi tes fils que tu as aimés, Seigneur, l'apprendraient: ce ne sont pas les diverses espèces defruits qui nourrissent l'homme, mais c'est ta parole qui conserve ceux qui croient en toi.	26 That thy children, O Lord, whom thou lovest, might know, that it is not the growing of fruits that nourisheth man: but that it is thy word, which preserveth them that put their trust in thee.
27 Car ce qui n'était pas détruit par le feu fondait à la simple chaleur d'un bref rayon de soleil,	27 For that which was not destroyed of the fire, being warmed with a little sunbeam, soon melted away:
28 afin que l'on sache qu'il faut devancer le soleil pour te rendre grâce, et te rencontrer dès le leverdu jour;	28 That it might be known, that we must prevent the sun to give thee thanks, and at the dayspring pray unto thee.
29 l'espoir de l'ingrat fond, en effet, comme le givre hivernal, comme une eau inutile, il s'écoule.	29 For the hope of the unthankful shall melt away as the winter's hoar frost, and shall run away as unprofitable water.
