JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Après un intervalle de trois ans, Judas et ses compagnons apprirent que Démétrius, fils deSéleucus, ayant abordé au port de Tripoli avec une forte armée et une flotte,	1 Three years after this, Judas and his men learned that Demetrius son of Seleucus had landed at theport of Tripolis with a strong army and a fleet,
2 s'était emparé du pays et avait fait périr Antiochus et son tuteur Lysias.	2 and that he had occupied the country and had killed Antiochus and his tutor Lysias.
3 Un certain Alkime, précédemment devenu grand prêtre, mais qui s'était volontairementsouillé au temps de la révolte, comprenant qu'il n'y avait pour lui de salut en aucune façon, ni désormais d'accèspossible au saint autel,	3 A certain Alcimus, a former high priest, had wilful y incurred defilement at the time of the insurrection;realising that whichever way he turned there was no security for him, nor any further access to the holy altar,
4 vint trouver le roi Démétrius vers l'an un, et lui offrit une couronne d'or avec une palme et, deplus, des rameaux d'olivier dus selon l'usage par le Temple; et, ce jour-là, il ne fit rien de plus.	4 he went to King Demetrius in about the year one hundred and fifty-one and presented him with agolden crown and a palm, together with the traditional olive branches from the Temple; there, for that day, he letthe matter rest.
5 Mais il trouva une occasion complice de sa démence quand, l'ayant appelé dans son conseil,Démétrius l'interrogea sur les dispositions et les desseins des Juifs. Il répondit:	5 Presently he found an opportunity to further his mad plan. When Demetrius cal ed him into his counciland questioned him about the dispositions and intentions of the Jews, he replied,
6 "Ceux des Juifs qu'on appelle Assidéens, dont Judas Maccabée a pris la direction, fomententla guerre et les séditions, ne laissant pas le royaume jouir du calme.	6 'Those Jews called Hasidaeans, who are led by Judas Maccabaeus, are war-mongers and rebels whoare preventing the kingdom from finding stability.
7 C'est pourquoi, ayant été dépouillé de ma dignité héréditaire, je veux dire du souverainpontificat, je suis venu ici,	7 That is why, after being deprived of my hereditary dignity -- I mean the high priesthood -- I have comehere now,
8 d'abord avec le souci sincère des intérêts du roi, ensuite en considération de nos concitoyens,car la déraison de ceux que j'ai nommés plonge toute notre race dans une grande infortune.	8 first out of genuine concern for the king's interests, and secondly, out of a regard for our own fellow-citizens, because the irresponsible behaviour of those I have mentioned has brought no slight misery on ourentire race.
9 Toi donc, ô roi, quand tu auras pris connaissance de chacun de ces griefs, daigne pourvoir ausalut de notre pays et de notre nation menacée de toutes parts, suivant cette bienfaisance affable que tutémoignes à tout le monde,	9 When your majesty has taken note of al these points, may it please you to make provision for thewelfare of our country and our oppressed nation, as befits the gracious benevolence you extend to al ;
10 car tant que Judas sera en vie, il sera impossible à l'Etat de goûter la paix."	10 for, as long as Judas remains alive, the State wil never enjoy peace.'
11 Dès qu'il eut parlé de la sorte, les autres amis du roi, hostiles à l'action de Judas,s'empressèrent d'enflammer Démétrius.	11 No sooner had he spoken thus than the rest of the King's Friends, who were hostile to Judas'activities, stoked Demetrius' anger.
12 Ayant aussitôt fixé son choix sur Nikanor, qui était devenu éléphantarque, il le promutstratège de Judée et le fit partir	12 The latter at once selected Nicanor, then commander of the elephants, promoted him to thecommand of Judaea and despatched him
13 avec l'ordre de faire périr Judas, de disperser ceux qui étaient avec lui et d'introniser Alkimegrand prêtre du plus grand des sanctuaires.	13 with instructions to dispose of Judas, disperse his followers and instal Alcimus as high priest of thegreatest of temples.
14 Quant aux païens de Judée qui avaient fui devant Judas, ils se rassemblèrent par troupesautour de Nikanor, pensant bien que l'infortune et le malheur des Juifs tourneraient à leur propre avantage.	14 The foreigners in Judaea, who had fled before Judas, flocked to join Nicanor, thinking that themisfortunes and troubles of the Jews would be to their own advantage.
15 Informés de l'arrivée de Nikanor et de l'agression des païens, les Juifs répandirent sur eux dela poussière et implorèrent Celui qui avait constitué son peuple pour l'éternité et qui ne manquait jamais desecourir son propre héritage avec des signes manifestes.	15 When the Jews heard that Nicanor was coming and that the foreigners were about to attack, theysprinkled dust over themselves and made supplication to him who had established his people for ever and whonever failed to support his own heritage by direct manifestations.
16 Sur l'ordre de leur chef, ils partirent aussitôt du lieu où ils se trouvaient et en vinrent auxmains avec eux au bourg de Dessau.	16 On their leader's orders, they at once left the place where they were and confronted the enemy atthe vil age of Dessau.
17 Simon, frère de Judas, avait engagé le combat avec Nikanor, mais à cause de l'arrivée subitedes adversaires, il avait subi un léger échec.	17 Simon, brother of Judas, engaged Nicanor but, owing to the sudden arrival of the enemy, suffered aslight reverse.
18 Toutefois, apprenant quelle était la valeur de Judas et de ses compagnons, leur assurancedans les combats livrés pour la patrie, Nikanor craignit de s'en remettre au jugement par le sang.	18 Nicanor, however, had heard how brave Judas and his men were and how resolutely they alwaysfought for their country, and he did not dare al ow bloodshed to decide the issue.
19 Aussi envoya-t-il Posidonius, Théodote et Mattathias pour tendre la main aux Juifs etrecevoir la leur.	19 And so he sent Posidonius, Theodotus and Mattathias to offer the Jews pledges of friendship and toaccept theirs.
20 Après un examen approfondi des propositions, le chef les communiqua aux troupes, et, lesavis ayant été unanimes, elles manifestèrent leur assentiment au traité.	20 After careful consideration of his terms, the leader communicated them to his troops, and since theywere all clearly of one mind they agreed to the treaty.
21 On fixa un jour où les chefs s'aboucheraient en particulier. De part et d'autre s'avança unvéhicule; on plaça des sièges d'honneur.	21 A day was fixed on which the respective leaders were to meet as individuals. A litter came out fromeither side and seats were set up.
22 Judas avait aposté aux endroits favorables des gens en armes, prêts à intervenir en cas deperfidie soudaine de la part des ennemis. Dans leur entretien ils se mirent d'accord.	22 Judas had posted armed men in strategic positions, in case of a sudden treacherous move by theenemy. The leaders held their conference and reached agreement.
23 Nikanor séjourna à Jérusalem sans y rien faire de déplacé. Au contraire, il renvoya cesfoules qui, par bandes, s'étaient groupées autour de lui.	23 Nicanor took up residence in Jerusalem and did nothing out of place there; indeed, he sent away thecrowds that had flocked to join him.
24 Il avait sans cesse Judas devant les yeux, éprouvant pour cet homme une inclination decoeur.	24 He kept Judas constantly with him, becoming deeply attached to him
25 Il l'engagea à se marier et à avoir des enfants. Judas se maria, goûta la tranquillité, jouit de lavie.	25 and encouraged him to marry and have children. Judas married, settled down and led a normal life.
26 Alkime, voyant leur bonne entente, et s'étant procuré une copie du traité conclu, s'en vintchez Démétrius et lui dit que Nikanor avait des idées contraires aux intérêts de l'Etat, car l'adversaire même deson royaume, Judas, il l'avait promu diadoque.	26 When Alcimus saw how friendly the two men had become, he went to Demetrius with a copy of thetreaty they had signed and told him that Nicanor was harbouring thoughts against the interests of the State, andwas planning that Judas, an enemy of the realm, should fil the next vacancy among the Friends of the King.
27 Le roi entra en fureur et, excité par les calomnies de ce misérable, il écrivit à Nikanor, luidéclarant qu'il éprouvait un grand déplaisir de ces conventions et lui donnant l'ordre d'envoyer sans retard àAntioche le Maccabée chargé de chaînes.	27 The king flew into a rage; roused by the slanders of this villain, he wrote to Nicanor, tel ing him of hisstrong displeasure at these agreements and ordering him immediately to send Maccabaeus to Antioch in chains.
28 Au reçu de ces lignes, Nikanor fut bouleversé, car il lui en coûtait de violer les conventionsavec un homme qui n'avait commis aucune injustice.	28 When the letter reached Nicanor, he was very much upset, for he disliked the prospect of breakingan agreement with a man who had done nothing wrong.
29 Mais comme il n'était pas facile de s'opposer au roi, il épiait une occasion favorable pouraccomplir cet ordre au moyen d'un stratagème.	29 Since, however, there was no way of opposing the king, he waited for an opportunity to carry out theorder by a stratagem.
30 De son côté, Maccabée, remarquant que Nikanor se comportait plus sèchement à son égardet que son abord ordinaire se faisait plus rude, pensa qu'une telle sévérité ne présageait rien de très bon. Ilrassembla donc un grand nombre de ses partisans et se déroba à Nikanor.	30 Maccabaeus began to notice that Nicanor was treating him more sharply and that his manner ofspeaking to him was more abrupt than it had been, and he concluded that such sharpness could have no verygood motive. He therefore collected a considerable number of his fol owers and got away from Nicanor.
31 Quand l'autre reconnut qu'il avait été joué de belle manière par cet homme, il se rendit auSanctuaire très grand et saint pendant que les prêtres offraient les sacrifices accoutumés, et commanda de luilivrer cet homme.	31 The latter, realising that the man had wel and truly outmanoeuvred him, went to the greatest andholiest of Temples when the priests were offering the customary sacrifices, and ordered them to surrenderJudas.
32 Comme ils assuraient avec serment qu'ils ne savaient où était l'homme qu'il cherchait,	32 When they protested on oath that they did not know where the wanted man could be,
33 Nikanor leva la main droite vers le Temple et affirma avec serment: "Si vous ne me livrezpas Judas enchaîné, je raserai cette demeure de Dieu, je détruirai l'autel, et, au même endroit, j'élèverai àDionysos un sanctuaire splendide."	33 he stretched out his right hand towards the Temple and swore this oath, 'If you do not hand Judasover to me as prisoner, I shal rase this dwelling of God to the ground, I shal demolish the altar, and on this veryspot I shal erect a splendid temple to Dionysus.'
34 Sur de telles paroles, il se retira. Mais les prêtres tendirent de leur côté les mains vers le ciel,implorant en ces termes Celui qui a toujours combattu pour notre nation:	34 With these words he left them. The priests stretched out their hands to heaven, cal ing on him whohas at al times done battle for our nation; this was their prayer:
35 "O toi Seigneur, qui n'as besoin de rien, il t'a plu que le Temple où tu habites se trouve aumilieu de nous.	35 'O Lord in need of nothing, it has pleased you that the Temple where you dwel should be here withus.
36 Maintenant donc, Seigneur saint de toute sainteté, préserve pour jamais de toute profanationcette Maison qui vient d'être purifiée."	36 Now, therefore, holy Lord of al holiness, preserve for ever from all profanation this House, so newlypurified.'
37 On dénonça alors à Nikanor un des anciens de Jérusalem nommé Razis, homme zélé pourses concitoyens, jouissant d'un excellent renom et qu'on appelait Père des Juifs à cause de son affection pour eux.	37 Now, a man cal ed Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, was denounced to Nicanor. He was a manwho loved his countrymen and stood high in their esteem, and he was known as the father of the Jews becauseof his kindness.
38 Inculpé de Judaïsme dans les premiers temps de la révolte, il avait exposé avec toute laconstance possible son corps et sa vie pour le Judaïsme.	38 In the earlier days of the insurrection he had been convicted of Judaism, and he had risked both lifeand limb for Judaism with the utmost zeal.
39 En vue de montrer la malveillance qu'il nourrissait à l'égard des Juifs, Nikanor envoya plusde 500 soldats pour l'arrêter,	39 Nicanor, by way of demonstrating the enmity he had for the Jews, sent over five hundred soldiers toarrest him,
40 car il ne doutait pas que faire disparaître cet homme ne fût un grand coup porté aux Juifs.	40 reckoning that if he eliminated this man he would be dealing them a severe blow.
41 Comme ces troupes étaient sur le point de s'emparer de la tour et forçaient le porche, l'ordreétant donné de mettre le feu et de brûler les portes, Razis, cerné de toutes parts, dirigea son épée contre lui-même;	41 When the troops were on the point of capturing the tower and were forcing the outer door and cal ingfor fire to set the doors alight, Razis, finding himself completely surrounded, fel on his own sword,
42 il choisit noblement de mourir plutôt que de tomber entre des mains criminelles et de subirdes outrages indignes de sa noblesse.	42 nobly resolving to die rather than fal into the clutches of these villains and suffer outrages unworthyof his noble birth.
43 Son coup ayant manqué le bon endroit, dans la hâte du combat, et les troupes se ruant àl'intérieur des portes, il courut allègrement en haut de la muraille et se précipita avec intrépidité sur la foule.	43 But in the heat of conflict he missed his thrust, and while the troops swarmed in through thedoorways, he ran nimbly upstairs to the parapet and manfully threw himself down among the troops.
44 Tous s'étant reculés aussitôt, il s'en vint choir au milieu de l'espace vide.	44 But, as they immediately drew back, he fell into the middle of the empty space.
45 Respirant encore, et enflammé d'ardeur, il se releva tout ruisselant de sang et, malgré de trèsdouloureuses blessures, il traversa la foule en courant. Enfin, debout sur une roche escarpée,	45 Stil breathing, and blazing with anger, he struggled to his feet, blood spurting in al directions, anddespite his terrible wounds ran right through the crowd; then, taking his stand on a steep rock,
46 et déjà tout à fait exsangue, il s'arracha les entrailles et, les prenant à deux mains, il lesprojeta sur la foule, priant le maître de la vie et de l'esprit de les lui rendre un jour. Ce fut ainsi qu'il mourut.	46 although he had now lost every drop of blood, he tore out his entrails and taking them in both handsflung them down on the crowd, cal ing on the Master of his life and spirit to give them back to him one day. Thushe died.
