Deuxième livre des Chroniques 10

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Roboam se rendit à Sichem, car c'est à Sichem que tout Israël était venu pour le proclamerroi.	1 Rehoboam then went to Shechem, al Israel having come to Shechem to proclaim him king.
2 Dès que Jéroboam fils de Nebat en fut informé -- il était en Egypte, où il avait fui le roiSalomon -- il revint d'Egypte.	2 As soon as Jeroboam son of Nebat heard the news -- he was in Egypt, where he had taken refugefrom King Solomon -- he returned from Egypt.
3 On le fit appeler et il vint avec tout Israël. Ils parlèrent ainsi à Roboam:	3 They now sent for him, so Jeroboam and al Israel came and spoke as fol ows to Rehoboam,
4 "Ton père a rendu pénible notre joug, allège maintenant le dur servage de ton père, lalourdeur du joug qu'il nous imposa, et nous te servirons."	4 'Your father laid a cruel yoke on us; if you wil lighten your father's cruel slavery, that heavy yoke whichhe imposed on us, we are wil ing to serve you.'
5 Il leur répondit: "Attendez trois jours, puis revenez vers moi." Et le peuple s'en alla.	5 He said to them, 'Come back to me in three days' time.' And the people went away.
6 Le roi Roboam prit conseil des anciens, qui avaient servi son père Salomon de son vivant, etdemanda: "Que conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple?"	6 King Rehoboam then consulted the elders, who had been in attendance on his father Solomon whilehe was alive, and said, 'How do you advise me to answer this people?'
7 Ils lui répondirent: "Si tu te montres bon envers ces gens, si tu leur es bienveillant et leurdonnes de bonnes paroles, alors ils resteront toujours tes serviteurs."	7 They replied, 'If you are fair to these people, pleasant to them and give them a fair reply, they wilremain your servants for ever.'
8 Mais il repoussa le conseil que les anciens lui avaient donné et consulta des jeunes gens quil'assistaient, ses compagnons d'enfance.	8 But he rejected the advice given him by the elders and consulted the young men in attendance onhim, who had grown up with him.
9 Il leur demanda: "Que conseillez-vous que nous répondions à ce peuple, qui m'a parlé ainsi:Allège le joug que ton père nous a imposé?"	9 He said, 'How do you advise us to answer these people who have been saying, "Lighten the yokewhich your father imposed on us"?'
10 Les jeunes gens, ses compagnons d'enfance, lui répondirent: "Voici ce que tu diras aupeuple qui t'a dit: Ton père a rendu pesant notre joug, mais toi allège notre charge, voici ce que tu leur répondras:Mon petit doigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père!	10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, 'This is the way to answer the people who havebeen saying, "Your father made our yoke heavy, you must lighten it for us!" This is the right thing to say to them,"My little finger is thicker than my father's loins!
11 Ainsi mon père vous a fait porter un joug pesant, moi, j'ajouterai encore à votre joug; monpère vous a châtiés avec des lanières, je le ferai, moi, avec des fouets à pointes de fer!"	11 Although my father laid a heavy yoke on you, I shal make it heavier stil ! My father controlled youwith the whip, but I shal apply a spiked lash!" '
12 Jéroboam, avec tout le peuple, vint à Roboam le troisième jour, selon cet ordre qu'il avaitdonné: "Revenez vers moi le troisième jour."	12 On the third day, Jeroboam and al the people came to Rehoboam in obedience to the king'sinstructions, 'Come back to me in three days' time.'
13 Le roi leur répondit durement. Le roi Roboam rejeta le conseil des anciens	13 And the king gave them a harsh answer. King Rehoboam, rejecting the advice of the elders,
14 et, suivant le conseil des jeunes, il leur parla ainsi: "Mon père a rendu pesant votre joug,moi j'y ajouterai encore; mon père vous a châtiés avec des lanières, je le ferai, moi, avec des fouets à pointes defer."	14 spoke to them as the young men had recommended, 'My father made your yoke heavy, but I shaladd to it. My father control ed you with the whip, but I shal apply a spiked lash.'
15 Le roi n'écouta donc pas le peuple: c'était une intervention de Dieu, pour accomplir laparole que Yahvé avait dite à Jéroboam, fils de Nebat, par le ministère d'Ahiyya de Silo,	15 Thus the king refused to listen to the people, and this was brought about by God, so that Yahwehmight fulfil the promise which he had made through Ahijah of Shiloh to Jeroboam son of Nebat.
16 et à tous les Israélites, à savoir: que le roi ne les écouterait pas. Ils répliquèrent alors au roi:"Quelle part avons-nous sur David? Nous n'avons pas d'héritage sur le fils de Jessé. Chacun à ses tentes, Israël!Et maintenant, pourvois à ta maison, David."	16 When al Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, the people answered the king thus: Whatshare have we in David? -no heritage in the son of Jesse! Each of you, to your tents, Israel! Now look to yourown house, David! So Israel went home again.
17 Quant aux Israélites qui habitaient les villes de Juda, Roboam régna sur eux.	17 Rehoboam, however, reigned over those Israelites who lived in the towns of Judah.
18 Le roi Roboam dépêcha Adoram, le chef de la corvée, mais les Israélites le lapidèrent et ilmourut; alors le roi Roboam se vit contraint de monter sur son char pour fuir à Jérusalem. Et Israël fut séparé dela maison de David, jusqu'à ce jour.	18 When King Rehoboam sent Adoram who was in charge of forced labour, the Israelites stoned him todeath, while King Rehoboam managed to mount his chariot and escape to Jerusalem.
	19 And Israel has remained in rebel ion against the House of David from that day to this.
