Deuxième livre des Chroniques 10

JERUSALEM	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Roboam se rendit à Sichem, car c'est à Sichem que tout Israël était venu pour le proclamerroi.	1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to proclaim him king.
2 Dès que Jéroboam fils de Nebat en fut informé -- il était en Egypte, où il avait fui le roiSalomon -- il revint d'Egypte.	2 When Jeroboam, son of Nebat, heard of this in Egypt where he had fled from King Solomon, he returned from Egypt.
3 On le fit appeler et il vint avec tout Israël. Ils parlèrent ainsi à Roboam:	3 Jeroboam was summoned to the assembly, and he and all Israel said to Rehoboam:
4 "Ton père a rendu pénible notre joug, allège maintenant le dur servage de ton père, lalourdeur du joug qu'il nous imposa, et nous te servirons."	4 "Your father laid a heavy yoke upon us. If you now lighten the harsh service and the heavy yoke that your father imposed on us, we will serve you."
5 Il leur répondit: "Attendez trois jours, puis revenez vers moi." Et le peuple s'en alla.	5 "In three days," he answered them, "come back to me." When the people had departed,
6 Le roi Roboam prit conseil des anciens, qui avaient servi son père Salomon de son vivant, etdemanda: "Que conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple?"	6 King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had been in the service of his father during Solomon's lifetime, asking, "What answer do you advise me to give this people?"
7 Ils lui répondirent: "Si tu te montres bon envers ces gens, si tu leur es bienveillant et leurdonnes de bonnes paroles, alors ils resteront toujours tes serviteurs."	7 They replied, "If you will deal kindly with this people and give in to them, acceding to their request, they will be your servants forever."
8 Mais il repoussa le conseil que les anciens lui avaient donné et consulta des jeunes gens quil'assistaient, ses compagnons d'enfance.	8 But he ignored the advice the elders had given him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were in his service.
9 Il leur demanda: "Que conseillez-vous que nous répondions à ce peuple, qui m'a parlé ainsi:Allège le joug que ton père nous a imposé?"	9 He said to them, "What answer do you advise me to give this people, who have asked me to lighten the yoke my father imposed on them?"
10 Les jeunes gens, ses compagnons d'enfance, lui répondirent: "Voici ce que tu diras aupeuple qui t'a dit: Ton père a rendu pesant notre joug, mais toi allège notre charge, voici ce que tu leur répondras:Mon petit doigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père!	10 The young men who had grown up with him replied: "This is the answer you should give to this people who have said to you, 'Your father laid a heavy yoke upon us, but do you lighten our yoke'; this you should say to them: 'My little finger is thicker than my father's body.
11 Ainsi mon père vous a fait porter un joug pesant, moi, j'ajouterai encore à votre joug; monpère vous a châtiés avec des lanières, je le ferai, moi, avec des fouets à pointes de fer!"	11 Whereas my father put a heavy yoke on you, I will make it heavier! My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions!'"
12 Jéroboam, avec tout le peuple, vint à Roboam le troisième jour, selon cet ordre qu'il avaitdonné: "Revenez vers moi le troisième jour."	12 On the third day, Jeroboam and all the people came back to King Rehoboam as he had instructed them to do.
13 Le roi leur répondit durement. Le roi Roboam rejeta le conseil des anciens	13 Ignoring the advice the elders had given him, the king gave them a harsh answer,
14 et, suivant le conseil des jeunes, il leur parla ainsi: "Mon père a rendu pesant votre joug,moi j'y ajouterai encore; mon père vous a châtiés avec des lanières, je le ferai, moi, avec des fouets à pointes defer."	14 speaking to them according to the advice of the young men: "My father laid a heavy yoke on you, but I will make it heavier. My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions."
15 Le roi n'écouta donc pas le peuple: c'était une intervention de Dieu, pour accomplir laparole que Yahvé avait dite à Jéroboam, fils de Nebat, par le ministère d'Ahiyya de Silo,	15 The king would not listen to the people, for this turn of events was divinely ordained to fulfill the prophecy the LORD had uttered to Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, through Ahijah the Shilonite.
16 et à tous les Israélites, à savoir: que le roi ne les écouterait pas. Ils répliquèrent alors au roi:"Quelle part avons-nous sur David? Nous n'avons pas d'héritage sur le fils de Jessé. Chacun à ses tentes, Israël!Et maintenant, pourvois à ta maison, David."	16 When all Israel saw that the king would not listen to them, the people answered the king. "What share have we in David? We have no heritage in the son of Jesse. Everyone to your tents, O Israel! Now look to your own house, David!" So all Israel went off to their tents.
17 Quant aux Israélites qui habitaient les villes de Juda, Roboam régna sur eux.	17 Rehoboam, therefore, reigned over only those Israelites who lived in the cities of Judah.
18 Le roi Roboam dépêcha Adoram, le chef de la corvée, mais les Israélites le lapidèrent et ilmourut; alors le roi Roboam se vit contraint de monter sur son char pour fuir à Jérusalem. Et Israël fut séparé dela maison de David, jusqu'à ce jour.	18 King Rehoboam then sent out Hadoram, who was superintendent of the forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. Rehoboam himself managed to mount his chariot and flee to Jerusalem.
	19 Thus Israel has been in rebellion against David's house to this day.
