Deuxième livre des Chroniques 10

JERUSALEM	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Roboam se rendit à Sichem, car c'est à Sichem que tout Israël était venu pour le proclamerroi.	1 And Roboam went to Sichem: for thither all Israel were assembled, to make him king.
2 Dès que Jéroboam fils de Nebat en fut informé -- il était en Egypte, où il avait fui le roiSalomon -- il revint d'Egypte.	2 And when Jeroboam the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (for he was fled thither from Solomon,) heard it, forthwith he returned.
3 On le fit appeler et il vint avec tout Israël. Ils parlèrent ainsi à Roboam:	3 And they sent for him, and he came with all Israel, and they spoke to Roboam, saying:
4 "Ton père a rendu pénible notre joug, allège maintenant le dur servage de ton père, lalourdeur du joug qu'il nous imposa, et nous te servirons."	4 Thy father oppressed us with a most grievous yoke, do thou govern us with a lighter hand than thy father, who laid upon us a heavy servitude, and ease some thing of the burden, that we may serve thee.
5 Il leur répondit: "Attendez trois jours, puis revenez vers moi." Et le peuple s'en alla.	5 And he said to them: Come to me again after three days. And when the people were gone,
6 Le roi Roboam prit conseil des anciens, qui avaient servi son père Salomon de son vivant, etdemanda: "Que conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple?"	6 He took counsel with the ancients, who had stood before his father Solomon, while he yet lived, saying: What counsel give you to me, that I may answer the people?
7 Ils lui répondirent: "Si tu te montres bon envers ces gens, si tu leur es bienveillant et leurdonnes de bonnes paroles, alors ils resteront toujours tes serviteurs."	7 And they said to him: If thou please this people, and soothe them with kind words, they will be thy servants for ever.
8 Mais il repoussa le conseil que les anciens lui avaient donné et consulta des jeunes gens quil'assistaient, ses compagnons d'enfance.	8 But he forsook the counsel of the ancients, end began to treat with the young men, that had been brought up with him, and were in his train.
9 Il leur demanda: "Que conseillez-vous que nous répondions à ce peuple, qui m'a parlé ainsi:Allège le joug que ton père nous a imposé?"	9 And he said to them: What seemeth good to you? or what shall I answer this people, who have said to me: Ease the yoke which thy father laid upon us?
10 Les jeunes gens, ses compagnons d'enfance, lui répondirent: "Voici ce que tu diras aupeuple qui t'a dit: Ton père a rendu pesant notre joug, mais toi allège notre charge, voici ce que tu leur répondras:Mon petit doigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père!	10 But they answered as young men, and brought up with him in pleasures, and said: Thus shalt thou speak to the people, that said to thee: Thy father made our yoke heavy, do thou ease it: thus shalt thou answer them: My little finger is thicker than the loins of my father.
11 Ainsi mon père vous a fait porter un joug pesant, moi, j'ajouterai encore à votre joug; monpère vous a châtiés avec des lanières, je le ferai, moi, avec des fouets à pointes de fer!"	11 My father laid upon you a heavy yoke, and I will add more weight to it: my father beat you with scourges, but I will beat you with scorpions.
12 Jéroboam, avec tout le peuple, vint à Roboam le troisième jour, selon cet ordre qu'il avaitdonné: "Revenez vers moi le troisième jour."	12 So Jeroboam, and all the people came to Roboam the third day, as he commanded them.
13 Le roi leur répondit durement. Le roi Roboam rejeta le conseil des anciens	13 And the king answered roughly, leaving the counsel of the ancients.
14 et, suivant le conseil des jeunes, il leur parla ainsi: "Mon père a rendu pesant votre joug,moi j'y ajouterai encore; mon père vous a châtiés avec des lanières, je le ferai, moi, avec des fouets à pointes defer."	14 And he spoke according to the advice of the young men : My father laid upon you a heavy yoke, which I will make heavier: my father beat you with scourges, but I will beat you with scorpions.
15 Le roi n'écouta donc pas le peuple: c'était une intervention de Dieu, pour accomplir laparole que Yahvé avait dite à Jéroboam, fils de Nebat, par le ministère d'Ahiyya de Silo,	15 And he condescended not to the people's requests: for it was the will of God, that his word might be fulfilled which he had spoken by the hand of Ahias the Silonite to Jeroboam the son of Nabat.
16 et à tous les Israélites, à savoir: que le roi ne les écouterait pas. Ils répliquèrent alors au roi:"Quelle part avons-nous sur David? Nous n'avons pas d'héritage sur le fils de Jessé. Chacun à ses tentes, Israël!Et maintenant, pourvois à ta maison, David."	16 And all the people upon the king's speaking roughly, said thus unto him: We have no part in David, nor inheritance in the son of Isai. Return to thy dwellings, O Israel, and do thou, O David, feed thy own house. And Israel went away to their dwellings.
17 Quant aux Israélites qui habitaient les villes de Juda, Roboam régna sur eux.	17 But Roboam reigned over the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Juda.
18 Le roi Roboam dépêcha Adoram, le chef de la corvée, mais les Israélites le lapidèrent et ilmourut; alors le roi Roboam se vit contraint de monter sur son char pour fuir à Jérusalem. Et Israël fut séparé dela maison de David, jusqu'à ce jour.	18 And king Roboam sent Aduram, who was over the tributes, and the children of Israel stoned him, and he died: and king Roboam made haste to gee up into his chariot, and fled into Jerusalem.
	19 And Israel revolted from the house of David unto this day.
