DIODATI	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 ED Elifaz Temanita rispose e disse:	1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite spoke and said:
2 Deve un uomo savio pronunziare opinioni vane, Ed empiersi il ventre di vento orientale?	2 Should a wise man answer with airy opinions, or puff himself up with wind?
3 Ed argomentar con parole inutili, E con ragionamenti onde non può trarre alcun vantaggio?	3 Should he argue in speech which does not avail, and in words which are to no profit?
4 Sì certo, tu annulli il timor di Dio, Ed impedisci l’orazione che deve farsi davanti a lui.	4 You in fact do away with piety, and you lessen devotion toward God,
5 Perciocchè la tua bocca dimostra la tua iniquità, Poichè tu hai scelto il parlar de’ frodolenti.	5 Because your wickedness instructs your mouth, and you choose to speak like the crafty.
6 La tua bocca ti condanna, e non io; E le tue labbra testificano contro a te.	6 Your own mouth condemns you, not I; you own lips refute you.
7 Sei tu il primiero uomo che sia nato nel mondo? O sei tu stato formato avanti i colli?	7 Are you indeed the first-born of mankind, or were you brought forth before the hills?
8 Hai tu udito il segreto di Dio, E ne hai tu sottratta a te la sapienza?	8 Are you privy to the counsels of God, and do you restrict wisdom to yourself?
9 Che sai tu, che noi non sappiamo? Che intendi tu, che non sia appo noi?	9 What do you know that we do not know? What intelligence have you which we have not?
10 Fra noi vi è eziandio alcun canuto, alcun molto vecchio, Più attempato che tuo padre.	10 There are gray-haired old men among us more advanced in years than your father.
11 Son le consolazioni di Dio troppo poca cosa per te? Hai tu alcuna cosa riposta appo te?	11 Are the consolations of God not enough for you, and speech that deals gently with you?
12 Perchè ti trasporta il cuor tuo? E perchè ammiccano gli occhi tuoi,	12 Why do your notions carry you away, and why do your eyes blink,
13 Che tu rivolga il tuo soffio, E proferisca della tua bocca parole contro a Dio?	13 So that you turn your anger against God and let such words escape your mouth!
14 Che cosa è l’uomo, ch’egli sia puro? E che cosa è chi è nato di donna, ch’egli sia giusto?	14 What is a man that he should be blameless, one born of woman that he should be righteous?
15 Ecco, egli non si fida ne’ suoi santi, Ed i cieli non son puri nel suo cospetto;	15 If in his holy ones God places no confidence, and if the heavens are not clean in his sight,
16 Quanto più abbominevole e puzzolente È l’uomo, che beve l’iniquità come acqua?	16 How much less so is the abominable, the corrupt: man, who drinks in iniquity like water!
17 Io ti dichiarerò, ascoltami pure, E ti racconterò ciò che io ho veduto;	17 I will show you, if you listen to me; what I have seen I will tell--
18 Il che i savi hanno narrato, E non l’hanno celato, avendolo ricevuto da’ padri loro;	18 What wise men relate and have not contradicted since the days of their fathers,
19 A’ quali soli la terra fu data, E per mezzo i cui paesi non passò mai straniero.	19 To whom alone the land was given, when no foreigner moved among them.
20 L’empio è tormentato tutti i giorni della sua vita; Ed al violento è riposto un piccol numero d’anni.	20 The wicked man is in torment all his days, and limited years are in store for the tyrant;
21 Egli ha negli orecchi un romor di spaventi; In tempo di pace il guastatore gli sopraggiunge.	21 The sound of terrors is in his ears; when all is prosperous, the spoiler comes upon him.
22 Egli non si fida punto di potere uscir delle tenebre; Egli sta sempre in guato, aspettando la spada.	22 He despairs of escaping the darkness, and looks ever for the sword;
23 Egli va tapinando per cercar dove sia del pane; Egli sa che ha in mano tutto presto il giorno delle tenebre.	23 A wanderer, food for the vultures, he knows that his destruction is imminent.
24 Angoscia e tribolazione lo spaventano; Lo sopraffanno come un re apparecchiato alla battaglia.	24 By day the darkness fills him with dread; distress and anguish overpower him.
25 Perciocchè egli ha distesa la sua mano contro a Dio, E si è rinforzato contro all’Onnipotente;	25 Because he has stretched out his hand against God and bade defiance to the Almighty,
26 E gli è corso col collo fermo, Co’ suoi spessi e rilevati scudi;	26 One shall rush sternly upon him with the stout bosses of his shield, like a king prepared for the charge.
27 Perciocchè egli ha coperto il suo viso di grasso, Ed ha fatte delle pieghe sopra i suoi fianchi;	27 Because he has blinded himself with his crassness, padding his loins with fat,
28 Ed è abitato in città desolate, in case disabitate, Ch’erano preste ad esser ridotte in monti di ruine.	28 He shall dwell in ruinous cities, in houses that are deserted, That are crumbling into clay
29 Egli non arricchirà, e le sue facoltà non saranno stabili, E il suo colmo non si spanderà nella terra.	29 with no shadow to lengthen over the ground. He shall not be rich, and his possessions shall not endure;
30 Egli non si dipartirà giammai dalle tenebre, La fiamma seccherà i suoi rampolli, Ed egli sarà portato via dal soffio della bocca di Dio.	30 A flame shall wither him up in his early growth, and with the wind his blossoms shall disappear.
31 Non confidisi già nella vanità, dalla quale è sedotto; Perciocchè egli muterà stato, e sarà ridotto al niente.	31 for vain shall be his bartering.
32 Questo mutamento si compierà fuor del suo tempo, E i suoi rami non verdeggeranno.	32 His stalk shall wither before its time, and his branches shall be green no more.
33 Il suo agresto sarà rapito come quel d’una vigna, E le sue gemme saranno sbattute come quelle di un ulivo.	33 He shall be like a vine that sheds its grapes unripened, and like an olive tree casting off its bloom.
34 Perciocchè la raunanza de’ profani sarà deserta, E il fuoco divorerà i tabernacoli di quelli che prendon presenti;	34 For the breed of the impious shall be sterile, and fire shall consume the tents of extortioners.
35 I quali concepiscono perversità, e partoriscono iniquità, E il cui ventre macchina fraude	35 They conceive malice and bring forth emptiness; they give birth to failure.
