| 1 Alors les enfants d'Ephraïm lui dirent : Pourquoi nous as-tu traités ainsi, et pourquoi ne nous as-tu pas fait avertir lorsque tu allais combattre les Madianites ? Et ils le querellèrent fort aigrement, jusqu'à en venir presque à la violence. | 1 And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply. |
| 2 Gédéon leur répondit : Que pouvais-je faire qui égalât ce que vous avez fait ? Est-ce qu'une grappe de raisin d'Ephraïm ne vaut pas mieux que toutes les vendanges d'Abiézer ? | 2 And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abi-ezer? |
| 3 Le Seigneur a livré entre vos mains les princes de Madian, Oreb et Zeb. Qu'ai-je pu faire qui approchât de ce que vous avez fait ? En leur parlant ainsi, il apaisa leur colère, qui était prête à éclater contre lui. | 3 God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that. |
| 4 Gédéon, étant venu ensuite sur le bord du Jourdain, le passa avec ses trois cents hommes qui le suivaient, et ils étaient si las, qu'ils ne pouvaient plus poursuivre les fuyards. | 4 And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them. |
| 5 (Et) Il dit donc aux habitants de Soccoth : Donnez, je vous prie, du pain à ceux qui sont avec moi, parce qu'ils n'en peuvent plus ; afin que nous puissions poursuivre les rois des Madianites, Zébée et Salmana. | 5 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian. |
| 6 Mais les notables (princes) de Soccoth lui répondirent : Peut-être la paume des mains de Zébée et de Salmana est-elle déjà en ton pouvoir ; et c'est pour cela que tu demandes que nous donnions du pain à tes gens ? | 6 And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army? |
| 7 Gédéon leur répondit : Lorsque le Seigneur aura livré entre mes mains Zébée et Salmana, je vous ferai briser le corps (je déchirerai votre chair) avec les épines et les ronces du désert. | 7 And Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers. |
| 8 Etant allé plus loin, il vint à Phanuel et il fit la même demande aux habitants de cette localité, et ils lui firent la même réponse que ceux de Soccoth. | 8 And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him. |
| 9 Gédéon lui répliqua de même : Lorsque je serai revenu en paix et victorieux, j'abattrai cette tour-là. | 9 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower. |
| 10 Or Zébée et Salmana prenaient du repos avec le reste de leur armée ; car il n'était resté à ces peuples d'Orient que quinze mille hommes de toutes leurs troupes, cent vingt mille hommes, tous gens de guerre et portant les armes, ayant péri. | 10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword. |
| 11 Gédéon, se dirigeant donc du côté de ceux qui habitaient sous la tente, à l'orient de Nobé et de Jegbaa, défit l'armée des ennemis, qui se croyaient en sûreté, s'imaginant qu'ils n'avaient plus rien à craindre. | 11 And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure. |
| 12 Zébée et Salmana s'enfuirent (aussitôt), toutes leurs troupes étant en désordre ; Gédéon les poursuivit et les prit tous deux. | 12 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host. |
| 13 Etant revenu du combat avant le lever du soleil, | 13 And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up, |
| 14 il prit un jeune homme (garçon) de Soccoth, et lui demanda les noms des notables et des anciens de Soccoth ; cet homme lui en marqua soixante-dix-sept. | 14 And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men. |
| 15 Gédéon vint ensuite à Soccoth et dit aux notables : Voici Zébée et Salmana au sujet desquels vous m'avez insulté, en disant : Peut-être les mains de Zébée et de Salmana sont-elles en ton pouvoir, et c'est pour cela que tu demandes que nous donnions du pain à tes gens, qui sont si las qu'ils n'en peuvent plus. | 15 And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary? |
| 16 Il prit donc les anciens de la ville, et il leur brisa le corps avec (il en déchira et mit en pièces) les épines et les ronces du désert. | 16 And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth. |
| 17 Il abattit aussi la tour de Phanuel, après avoir tué les habitants de la ville. | 17 And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city. |
| 18 Il dit ensuite à Zébée et à Salmana : Comment étaient (faits) ceux que vous avez tués au mont Thabor ? Ils lui répondirent : Ils étaient comme vous, et l'un d'eux paraissait un fils de roi. | 18 Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king. |
| 19 Gédéon ajouta : C'étaient mes frères et les enfants de ma mère. Vive le Seigneur (le Seigneur vit) ! si vous leur aviez sauvé la vie, je ne vous tuerais pas (maintenant). | 19 And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you. |
| 20 Il dit ensuite à Jéther, son fils aîné : Va, tue-les. Mais Jéther ne tira point son épée, parce qu'il était effrayé, n'étant encore qu'un enfant. | 20 And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth. |
| 21 Zébée et Salmana dirent donc à Gédéon : Viens toi-même, et tue-nous ; car c'est l'âge qui rend l'homme fort. Gédéon, s'étant avancé, tua Zébée et Salmana. Il prit ensuite tous les ornements et les bossettes qu'on met d'ordinaire au cou des chameaux des rois. | 21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels' necks. |
| 22 Alors tous les enfants d'Israël dirent à Gédéon : Sois notre prince et commande-nous, toi, ton fils, et le fils de ton fils, parce que tu nous as délivrés de la main des Madianites. | 22 Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian. |
| 23 Gédéon leur répondit : Je ne serai point votre prince, et je ne vous commanderai point, ni moi ni mes fils ; mais c'est le Seigneur qui sera votre prince, et qui vous commandera. | 23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you. |
| 24 Et il ajouta : Je ne vous demande qu'une chose. Donnez-moi les pendants d'oreilles que vous avez eus de votre butin. Car les Ismaélites (Israélites ?) avaient coutume de porter des pendants d'oreilles d'or. | 24 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) |
| 25 Ils lui répondirent : Nous (te) les donnerons très volontiers. Et étendant un manteau à terre, ils y jetèrent les pendants d'oreilles qu'ils avaient eus de leur butin. | 25 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey. |
| 26 Ces pendants d'oreilles que Gédéon avait demandés pesaient mille sept cents sicles d'or, sans compter les ornements, les colliers précieux et les vêtements d'écarlate (de pourpre) que les rois de Madian avaient coutume de porter, et sans compter les colliers (carcans) d'or des chameaux. | 26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks. |
| 27 (Et) Gédéon fit de toutes ces choses précieuses un éphod, qu'il mit dans sa ville d'Ephra. Et cet éphod fit tomber les Israélites dans la prostitution de l'idolâtrie, et causa la ruine de Gédéon et de toute sa maison. | 27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house. |
| 28 Les Madianites furent donc humiliés devant les enfants d'Israël, et ils ne purent plus lever la tête ; mais tout le pays demeura en paix pendant les quarante années du gouvernement de Gédéon. | 28 Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon. |
| 29 Après cela Jérobaal (, fils de Joas,) s'en retourna et demeura dans sa maison ; | 29 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house. |
| 30 et il eut soixante-dix fils issus de lui, car il avait plusieurs femmes. | 30 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives. |
| 31 Et sa concubine (seconde femme) qu'il avait à Sichem lui donna un fils nommé Abimélech. | 31 And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech. |
| 32 Gédéon, fils de Joas, mourut enfin dans une heureuse vieillesse, et il fut enseveli dans le sépulcre de Joas, son père, à Ephra, qui appartenait à la famille d'Ezri. | 32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites. |
| 33 (Mais) Après la mort de Gédéon, les enfants d'Israël se détournèrent du culte de Dieu, et ils se prostituèrent à l'idolâtrie des Baals (à Baal). Ils firent alliance avec Baal, afin qu'il fût leur dieu ; | 33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god. |
| 34 et ils oublièrent le Seigneur leur Dieu, qui les avait délivrés des mains de tous leurs ennemis dont ils étaient environnés. | 34 And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side: |
| 35 Et ils n'usèrent point de miséricorde envers la maison de Gédéon Jérobaal (Gédéon), pour reconnaître tout le bien qu'il avait fait à Israël. | 35 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel. |
