| 1 Après la mort de Josué, les enfants d'Israël consultèrent le Seigneur et lui dirent : Qui marchera à notre tête pour combattre les Chananéens, et qui sera notre chef dans cette guerre ? | 1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them? |
| 2 Le Seigneur répondit : Juda marchera devant vous. Je lui ai livré le pays. | 2 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand. |
| 3 Alors Juda dit à Siméon son frère : Viens m'aider à me rendre maître de la part qui m'est échue par le sort, et à combattre les Chananéens ; et ensuite j'irai t'aider à acquérir ce qui t'est échu. Et Siméon s'en alla donc avec Juda. | 3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him. |
| 4 Et Juda ayant marché contre l'ennemi, le Seigneur livra entre leurs mains les Chananéens et les Phérézéens ; ils taillèrent en pièces dix mille hommes à Bézec. | 4 And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men. |
| 5 A Bézec ils trouvèrent Adonibézec. Ils le combattirent et taillèrent en pièces les Chananéens et les Phérézéens. | 5 And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites. |
| 6 Adonibézec ayant pris la fuite, ils le poursuivirent, le prirent et lui coupèrent les extrémités des mains et des pieds. | 6 But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. |
| 7 Adonibézec dit alors : J'ai fait couper l'extrémité des mains et des pieds à soixante-dix rois qui mangeaient sous ma table les restes de ce qu'on me servait. Dieu m'a traité comme j'ai traité les autres. Ensuite ils l'emmenèrent à Jérusalem, où il mourut. | 7 And Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died. |
| 8 Car (Or) les enfants de Juda, ayant mis le siège devant Jérusalem, la prirent, passèrent au fil de l'épée tout ce qu'ils y trouvèrent, et mirent le feu dans toute la ville. | 8 Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire. |
| 9 Ils descendirent ensuite pour combattre les Chananéens dans le pays des montagnes, dans le district du midi et dans la plaine. | 9 And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley. |
| 10 Et Juda, ayant marché contre les Chananéens qui habitaient à Hébron, dont le nom était autrefois Cariath-Arbé, défit Sésaï, Ahiman et Tholmaï. | 10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai. |
| 11 Et étant parti de là, il marcha contre les habitants de Dabir, qui s'appelait autrefois Cariath-Sépher, c'est-à-dire (la) Ville des lettres. | 11 And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher: |
| 12 Et Caleb dit alors : Je donnerai ma fille Axa pour femme à celui qui prendra et ruinera Cariath-Sépher. | 12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife. |
| 13 Et (Or) Othoniel, fils de Cénez, frère puîné de Caleb, l'ayant prise, il lui donna pour femme sa fille Axa. | 13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife. |
| 14 Et tandis qu'Axa était en chemin, Othoniel son mari l'avertit de demander un champ à son père. Axa, étant donc montée sur un âne, commença à soupirer. Et Caleb lui dit : Qu'as-tu ? | 14 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou? |
| 15 Elle lui répondit : Donne-moi (Accorde-moi) une bénédiction (grâce). Tu m'as donné une terre desséchée, donne-m'en une aussi où il y ait des eaux en abondance. Caleb lui donna donc une terre dont le haut et le bas étaient arrosés d'eau. | 15 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs. |
| 16 Or les enfants de Jéthro le (d'un) Cinéen, allié de Moïse, montèrent de la Ville des palmes avec les enfants de Juda, au désert qui était échu en partage à cette tribu, et qui est vers le midi d'Arad ; et ils habitèrent avec eux. | 16 And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people. |
| 17 Juda s'en étant allé aussi avec son frère Siméon, ils défirent ensemble les Chananéens qui habitaient à Séphaath, et les passèrent au fil de l'épée. Et cette ville fut appelée Horma, c'est-à-dire anathème. | 17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah. |
| 18 Juda prit aussi Gaza avec ses confins, Ascalon et Accaron avec leurs confins. | 18 Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof. |
| 19 Le Seigneur fut avec Juda, et il se rendit maître des montagnes ; mais il ne put défaire ceux des ennemis qui habitaient dans la vallée, parce qu'ils avaient une grande quantité de chars armés de faux. | 19 And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. |
| 20 Et ils donnèrent, selon que Moïse l'avait ordonné, Hébron à Caleb, qui y extermina les trois fils d'Enac. | 20 And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak. |
| 21 Mais les enfants de Benjamin n'exterminèrent point les Jébuséens qui demeuraient à Jérusalem ; et les Jébuséens demeurèrent à Jérusalem avec les enfants de Benjamin, comme ils y sont encore aujourd'hui. | 21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day. |
| 22 La maison de Joseph marcha aussi contre Béthel, et le Seigneur était (fut) avec eux. | 22 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them. |
| 23 Car lorsqu'ils (comme) assiégeaient la ville, qui s'appelait auparavant Luza, | 23 And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.) |
| 24 ayant vu un homme qui en sortait, ils lui dirent : Montre-nous par où l'on peut entrer dans la ville, et nous te ferons miséricorde. | 24 And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy. |
| 25 Cet homme le leur ayant montré, ils passèrent au fil de l'épée tout ce qui se trouva dans la ville ; et ils conservèrent (renvoyèrent) cet homme avec toute sa famille. | 25 And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family. |
| 26 Cet homme, ayant été congédié, s'en alla au pays des Hetthim, où il bâtit une ville qu'il appela Luza, nom qu'elle porte encore aujourd'hui. | 26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day. |
| 27 Manassé non plus ne détruisit pas Bethsan et Thanac avec les villages qui en dépendent, ni les habitants de Dor, de Jéblaam et de Mageddo avec les villages voisins ; et les Chananéens commencèrent à demeurer avec eux. | 27 Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. |
| 28 Lorsqu'Israël fut devenu plus fort, il les rendit tributaires ; mais il ne voulut point les exterminer. | 28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out. |
| 29 Ephraïm ne tua point non plus les Chananéens qui habitaient à Gazer ; mais il demeura avec eux. | 29 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them. |
| 30 Zabulon n'extermina point les habitants de Cétron et de Naalol ; mais les Chananéens demeurèrent au milieu d'eux, et ils devinrent leurs tributaires. | 30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries. |
| 31 Aser n'extermina point non plus les habitants d'Accho, de Sidon, d'Ahalab, d'Achazib, d'Helba, d'Aphec et de Rohob ; | 31 Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob: |
| 32 et ils demeurèrent au milieu des Chananéens qui habitaient dans ce pays-là, et ils ne les exterminèrent point. | 32 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out. |
| 33 Nephtali n'extermina point non plus les habitants de Bethsamès et de Béthanath ; mais il demeura au milieu des Chananéens qui habitaient en ce pays-là, et ceux de Bethsamès et de Béthanath lui devinrent tributaires. | 33 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries unto them. |
| 34 Les Amorrhéens tinrent les enfants de Dan fort resserrés dans la montagne, sans leur permettre de s'étendre en descendant dans la plaine ; | 34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley: |
| 35 et ils habitèrent sur la montagne d'Harès, c'est-à-dire la montagne de l'argile (têts), dans Aïalon et dans Salébim ; mais la maison de Joseph étant devenue plus puissante, se rendit les Amorrhéens tributaires. | 35 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries. |
| 36 Et le pays des Amorrhéens eut pour limites la montée du Scorpion, Pétra et les lieux plus élevés. | 36 And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward. |
