| 1 Nous savons, en effet, que si cette maison de terre où nous habitons est détruite, nous avons un édifice qui vient de Dieu, une maison qui n'est pas faite de mains d'homme, mais qui est éternelle, dans les cieux. | 1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. |
| 2 Aussi, dans ce corps nous gémissons, désirant d'être revêtus de notre habitation céleste, | 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: |
| 3 si toutefois nous sommes trouvés vêtus, et non pas nus. | 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. |
| 4 Car, pendant que nous sommes dans cette tente, nous gémissons sous le fardeau (sa pesanteur), parce que nous ne voulons pas être dépouillés, mais être revêtus par-dessus, afin que ce qu'il y a de mortel soit absorbé par la vie. | 4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. |
| 5 Or, celui qui nous a formés pour cela même, c'est Dieu, qui nous a aussi donné les arrhes de l'Esprit. | 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. |
| 6 Nous sommes donc toujours pleins de confiance, sachant que, pendant que nous habitons dans ce corps, nous demeurons loin du Seigneur | 6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: |
| 7 (car c'est par la foi que nous marchons, et non par la claire vue) ; | 7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) |
| 8 nous sommes, dis-je, pleins de confiance, et nous aimerions mieux sortir de ce corps, et aller habiter auprès du Seigneur (jouir de la présence). | 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. |
| 9 C'est pourquoi nous nous efforçons, soit que nous soyons sortis du corps, soit que nous y habitions (soit présent soit absent), de lui être agréables. | 9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. |
| 10 Car il faut que nous comparaissions tous devant le tribunal du Christ, afin que chacun reçoive ce qui est dû à son corps, selon le bien ou le mal qu'il aura fait. | 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. |
| 11 Sachant donc combien le Seigneur est redoutable, nous tâchons de persuader les hommes ; mais nous sommes connus de Dieu, et j'espère que nous sommes aussi connus dans vos consciences. | 11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences. |
| 12 Nous ne nous recommandons pas de nouveau nous-mêmes auprès de vous, mais nous vous donnons (l') occasion de vous glorifier à notre sujet, afin que vous puissiez répondre à ceux qui se glorifient de ce qui paraît, et non de ce qui est dans le cœur. | 12 For we commend not ourselves again unto you, but give you occasion to glory on our behalf, that ye may have somewhat to answer them which glory in appearance, and not in heart. |
| 13 En effet, si nous sommes emportés comme hors de nous-mêmes, c'est pour Dieu ; si nous sommes pleins de bon sens (plus retenus), c'est pour vous. | 13 For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause. |
| 14 Car l'amour du Christ nous presse, étant d'avis que si un seul est mort pour tous, tous sont morts par là-même ; | 14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: |
| 15 et le Christ est mort pour tous, afin que ceux qui vivent ne vivent plus pour eux-mêmes, mais pour celui qui est mort et ressuscité pour eux. | 15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. |
| 16 C'est pourquoi désormais nous ne connaissons plus personne selon la chair ; et si nous avons connu le Christ selon la chair, maintenant nous ne le connaissons plus (ainsi). | 16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. |
| 17 Si donc quelqu'un est dans le Christ, il est une nouvelle créature ; les vieilles choses sont passées : voici que tout est devenu nouveau. | 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. |
| 18 Et tout cela vient de Dieu, qui nous a réconciliés avec lui par le Christ, et qui nous a confié le ministère de la réconciliation. | 18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; |
| 19 Car Dieu a réconcilié le monde avec lui dans le Christ, ne leur imputant point leurs péchés ; et il a mis en nous la parole de réconciliation. | 19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. |
| 20 Nous faisons donc les fonctions d'ambassadeurs pour le Christ, comme si Dieu exhortait par nous (exhortant). Nous vous en conjurons au nom du Christ, réconciliez-vous avec Dieu. | 20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. |
| 21 Celui qui ne connaissait point le péché, il l'a fait péché pour (l'amour de) nous, afin qu'en lui nous devinssions justice de Dieu. | 21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. |
