| 1 Et il arriva que Jésus entra, un jour de sabbat, dans la maison d'un des principaux pharisiens, pour y manger du pain ; et ceux-ci l'observaient. | 1 And it came to pass, when Jesus went into the house of one of the chief of the Pharisees, on the sabbath day, to eat bread, that they watched him. |
| 2 Et voici qu'un homme hydropique était devant lui. | 2 And behold, there was a certain man before him that had the dropsy. |
| 3 Et Jésus, prenant la parole, dit aux docteurs de la loi et aux pharisiens : Est-il permis de guérir le jour du sabbat ? | 3 And Jesus answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying: Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? |
| 4 Mais ils gardèrent le silence. Alors lui, prenant cet homme par la main, le guérit et le renvoya. | 4 But they held their peace. But he taking him, healed him, and sent him away. |
| 5 Puis, s'adressant à eux, il dit : Qui de vous, si son âne ou son boeuf tombe dans un puits, ne l'en retirera pas aussitôt, le jour du sabbat ? | 5 And answering them, he said: Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fall into a pit, and will not immediately draw him out, on the sabbath day? |
| 6 Et ils ne pouvaient rien répondre à cela. | 6 And they could not answer him to these things. |
| 7 Il dit aussi aux invités cette parabole, considérant comment ils choisissaient les premières places. Il leur dit : | 7 And he spoke a parable also to them that were invited, marking how they chose the first seats at the table, saying to them: |
| 8 Quand tu seras invité à des noces, ne te mets pas à la première place, de peur qu'il n'y ait parmi les invités une personne plus considérable que toi, | 8 When thou art invited to a wedding, sit not down in the first place, lest perhaps one more honourable than thou be invited by him: |
| 9 et que celui qui vous a conviés, toi et lui, ne vienne te dire : Cède la place à celui-ci, et qu'alors tu n'ailles, en rougissant, occuper la dernière place. | 9 And he that invited thee and him, come and say to thee, Give this man place: and then thou begin with shame to take the lowest place. |
| 10 Mais, quand tu auras été invité, va, mets-toi à la dernière place, afin que, lorsque celui qui t'a invité sera venu, il te dise : Mon ami, monte plus haut. Et alors ce sera une gloire pour toi devant ceux qui seront à table avec toi. | 10 But when thou art invited, go, sit down in the lowest place; that when he who invited thee, cometh, he may say to thee: Friend, go up higher. Then shalt thou have glory before them that sit at table with thee. |
| 11 Car quiconque s'élève sera humilié, et quiconque s'humilie sera élevé. | 11 Because every one that exalteth himself, shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted. |
| 12 Il dit aussi à celui qui l'avait invité : Lorsque tu donnes à dîner ou à souper, n'appelle pas tes amis, ni tes frères, ni tes parents, ni tes voisins riches, de peur qu'ils ne t'invitent à leur tour, et ne te rendent ce qu'ils ont reçu de toi. | 12 And he said to him also that had invited him: When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor thy neighbours who are rich; lest perhaps they also invite thee again, and a recompense be made to thee. |
| 13 Mais lorsque tu fais un festin, appelle les pauvres, les estropiés, les boiteux et les aveugles ; | 13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind; |
| 14 et tu seras heureux de ce qu'ils n'ont pas le moyen de te le rendre, car cela te sera rendu à la résurrection des justes. | 14 And thou shalt be blessed, because they have not wherewith to make thee recompense: for recompense shall be made thee at the resurrection of the just. |
| 15 Un de ceux que étaient à table avec Jésus, ayant entendu ces paroles, lui dit : Heureux celui qui mangera du pain dans le royaume de Dieu ! | 15 When one of them that sat at table with him, had heard these things, he said to him: Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. |
| 16 Alors Jésus lui dit : Un homme fit un grand souper, et invita de nombreux convives. | 16 But he said to him: A certain man made a great supper, and invited many. |
| 17 Et à l'heure du souper, il envoya son serviteur dire aux invités de venir, parce que tout était prêt. | 17 And he sent his servant at the hour of supper to say to them that were invited, that they should come, for now all things are ready. |
| 18 Mais tous, unanimement, commencèrent à s'excuser. Le premier lui dit : J'ai acheté une terre (maison de campagne), et il est nécessaire que j'aille la voir ; je t'en prie, excuse-moi. | 18 And they began all at once to make excuse. The first said to him: I have bought a farm, and I must needs go out and see it: I pray thee, hold me excused. |
| 19 Le second dit : J'ai acheté cinq paires de boeufs, et je vais les essayer ; je t'en prie, excuse-moi. | 19 And another said: I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to try them: I pray thee, hold me excused. |
| 20 Et un autre dit : J'ai épousé une femme, et c'est pourquoi je ne puis venir. | 20 And another said: I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. |
| 21 A son retour, le serviteur rapporta cela à son maître. Alors le père de famille, irrité, dit à son serviteur : Va promptement sur les places et dans les rues de la ville, et amène ici les pauvres, les estropiés, les aveugles et les boiteux. | 21 And the servant returning, told these things to his lord. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant: Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the feeble, and the blind, and the lame. |
| 22 Le serviteur dit ensuite : Seigneur, ce que vous avez commandé a été fait, et il y a encore de la place. | 22 And the servant said: Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. |
| 23 Et le maître dit au serviteur : Va dans les chemins et le long des haies, et contrains les gens d'entrer, afin que ma maison soit remplie. | 23 And the Lord said to the servant: Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. |
| 24 Car, je vous le dis, aucun de ces hommes qui avaient été invités ne goûtera de mon souper. | 24 But I say unto you, that none of those men that were invited, shall taste of my supper. |
| 25 Or de grandes foules marchaient avec Jésus ; et se tournant vers elles, il leur dit : | 25 And there went great multitudes with him. And turning, he said to them: |
| 26 Si quelqu'un vient à moi, et ne hait pas son père, et sa mère, et sa femme, et ses enfants, et ses frères, et ses sœurs, et même sa propre vie, il ne peut être mon disciple. | 26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. |
| 27 Et celui qui ne porte pas sa croix, et ne me suit pas, ne peut être mon disciple. | 27 And whosoever doth not carry his cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple. |
| 28 Car quel est celui de vous qui, voulant bâtir une tour, ne s'assied d'abord, et ne suppute les dépenses qui sont nécessaires, afin de voir s'il aura de quoi l'achever ; | 28 For which of you having a mind to build a tower, doth not first sit down, and reckon the charges that are necessary, whether he have wherewithal to finish it: |
| 29 de peur qu'après avoir posé les fondements, il ne puisse l'achever, et que tous ceux qui verront cela ne se mettent à se moquer de lui, | 29 Lest, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able ti finish it, all that see it begin to mock him, |
| 30 en disant : Cet homme a commencé à bâtir, et il n'a pu achever ? | 30 Saying: This man began to build, and was not able to finish. |
| 31 Ou quel roi, sur le point de faire la guerre à un autre roi, ne s'assied d'abord, afin d'examiner s'il pourra, avec dix mille hommes, marcher contre celui qui s'avance sur lui avec vingt mille ? | 31 Or what king, about to go to make war against another king, doth not first sit down, and think whether he be able, with ten thousand, to meet him that, with twenty thousand, cometh against him? |
| 32 Autrement, tandis que l'autre roi est encore loin, il lui envoie une ambassade, et lui fait des propositions de paix. | 32 Or else, whilst the other is yet afar off, sending an embassy, he desireth conditions of peace. |
| 33 Ainsi donc, quiconque d'entre vous ne renonce pas à tout ce qu'il possède ne peut être mon disciple. | 33 So likewise every one of you that doth not renounce all that he possesseth, cannot be my disciple. |
| 34 Le sel est bon ; mais, si le sel s'affadit, avec quoi l'assaisonnera-t-on ? | 34 Salt is good. But if the salt shall lose its savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? |
| 35 Il n'est plus propre ni pour la terre, ni pour le fumier ; mais on le jettera dehors. Que celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre, entende. | 35 It is neither profitable for the land nor for the dunghill, but shall be cast out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. |
