| 2 Plût à Dieu que les péchés par lesquels j'ai mérité la colère de Dieu, et les maux que je souffre, fussent pesés dans une balance ! | 2 I wish that my sins, for which I deserve wrath, and the calamity that I endure, were weighed out on a balance. |
| 3 Ceux-ci apparaîtraient plus lourds que le sable de la mer. C'est pourquoi mes paroles sont pleines de douleur, | 3 Compared to the sand of the sea, they would appear heavier, and so my words are full of sorrow. |
| 4 car les flèches du Seigneur m'ont percé. La douleur qu'elles me causent épuise mon esprit, et les terreurs de Dieu (du Seigneur) m'assiègent. | 4 For the arrows of the Lord are in me, my spirit drinks of their indignation, and the terrors of the Lord are soldiers against me. |
| 5 L'âne sauvage (L'onagre) crie-t-il lorsqu'il a de l'herbe ? ou le bœuf mugit-il lorsqu'il est devant une auge (crèche) pleine ? | 5 Will the wild ass bray when he has grass? Or will the ox bellow when he stands before a full manger? |
| 6 Peut-on manger d'un mets fade, qui n'est pas assaisonné avec le sel ? ou quelqu'un peut-il goûter ce qui fait mourir celui qui en goûte ? | 6 Or can one eat bland food, which is not seasoned with salt? Or can anyone taste that which, if tasted, causes death? |
| 7 Ce qu'auparavant je (mon âme) n'eusse pas voulu toucher, c'est là maintenant ma nourriture, à cause de mon angoisse (détresse). | 7 The things that my soul was unwilling to touch before, now, because of anguish, are my foods. |
| 8 Qui m'accordera que ma prière soit reçue, et que Dieu me donne ce que j'attends ; | 8 Who will grant that my petition may arrive and that God may bestow on me what I expect, |
| 9 que celui qui a commencé achève de me briser ; qu'il laisse aller sa main (qu'il m'extirpe) et qu'il tranche ma vie ? | 9 and that he who, at first, had crushed me, will let loose his hand and cut me down? |
| 10 Qu'il me reste au moins cette consolation, dans ces douleurs dont il m'afflige sans m'épargner, que je ne contredise en rien les ordres du Dieu saint (Saint). | 10 And may this be my consolation, that in afflicting me with sorrow, although he might not be lenient with me, I still do not contradict the words of the Holy One. |
| 11 Car quelle est ma force pour que je supporte ces maux ? ou quelle est ma fin pour que je conserve la patience ? | 11 For what is my strength, that I may continue? Or what is my goal, so that I may act patiently? |
| 12 Ma force n'est pas la force des pierres, et ma chair n'est pas de bronze (d'airain). | 12 My strength is not the strength of stones, nor is my flesh made of bronze. |
| 13 Voici que je ne trouve en moi aucun secours, et mes amis intimes (mêmes) m'ont abandonné. | 13 Behold, there is no help for me in myself, and my loved ones also have withdrawn from me. |
| 14 Celui qui n'a pas compassion de son ami a perdu la crainte du Seigneur. | 14 He who takes away mercy from his friend, abandons the fear of the Lord. |
| 15 Mes frères ont passé devant moi, comme un torrent qui s'écoule avec rapidité dans les vallées. | 15 My brethren have disregarded me, like a torrent that passes swiftly through the steep valleys. |
| 16 Ceux qui craignent la gelée seront accablés par la neige. | 16 Those who fear frost, snow will rush over them. |
| 17 Au temps où ils commenceront à s'écouler (se répandre), ils périront ; dès que la chaleur viendra, ils disparaîtront de leur lieu. | 17 At that time, when they are scattered, they will perish, and when it becomes hot, they will be freed from their place. |
| 18 Ils vont par des sentiers embarrassés (cachés) ; ils marchent sur le vide, et ils périront. | 18 The paths of their steps are entangled; they will walk in vain and will perish. |
| 19 Considérez les sentiers de Théma, les chemins de Saba, et attendez un peu. | 19 Consider the paths of Thema, the ways of Saba, and wait a little while. |
| 20 Ils sont confus, parce que j'ai espéré ; ils sont venus aussi jusqu'à moi, et ils ont été couverts de honte (confusion). | 20 They have been thrown into confusion, just as I had hoped; they have even come to me and are overwhelmed with shame. |
| 21 Vous ne faites que venir, et aussitôt que vous voyez ma plaie, vous en avez horreur. | 21 Now you have arrived, and merely by seeing my affliction, you are afraid. |
| 22 Ai-je dit : Apportez-moi quelque chose, ou donnez-moi de votre bien ? | 22 Did I say: “Bring to me and give to me from your necessities?” |
| 23 ou : Délivrez-moi de la main de l'ennemi, et arrachez-moi de la main des forts ? | 23 or, “Free me from the hand of the enemy and rescue me from the hand of the strong?” |
| 24 Enseignez-moi, et je me tairai ; et si j'ai ignoré quelque chose, instruisez-moi. | 24 Teach me, and I will be silent, and if by chance I have been ignorant of anything, instruct me. |
| 25 Pourquoi attaquez-vous (avez-vous déprimé) des paroles de vérité, puisque nul d'entre vous ne peut m'accuser ? | 25 Why have you diminished the words of truth, when there is none of you who is able to offer proof against me? |
| 26 Vous n'étudiez dans vos discours qu'à jeter du blâme, et vous ne faites que parler en l'air. | 26 You prepare speeches as so much noise, and you offer words into the wind. |
| 27 Vous vous précipitez sur un orphelin, et vous vous efforcez d'accabler (de renverser) votre ami. | 27 You encroach upon the orphan, and you strive to undermine your friend. |
| 28 Mais achevez ce que vous avez commencé ; prêtez l'oreille, et voyez si je mens. | 28 Such is true, so finish what you have begun. Listen closely, and see if I lie. |
| 29 Répondez, je vous prie, sans contention ; et, en parlant, jugez des choses selon la justice. | 29 Respond, I beg you, without contention, and, speaking what is just, pass judgment. |
| 30 Alors vous ne trouverez pas d'iniquité sur ma langue, et la folie ne retentira pas dans ma bouche. | 30 And you will not find iniquity on my tongue, nor will foolishness resound in my throat. |
