| 1 (Or) Sophar de Naama prit la parole et dit : | 1 Then Sophar the Naamathite answered, and said: |
| 2 Celui qui parle tant n'écoutera-t-il pas à son tour ? et suffira-t-il d'être un grand parleur pour paraître juste (être absous) ? | 2 Shall not he that speaketh much, hear also? or shall a man full of talk be justified? |
| 3 Les hommes se tairont-ils pour toi seul ? et après t'être moqué des autres, ne seras-tu confondu par personne ? | 3 Shall men hold their peace to thee only? and when thou hast mocked others, shall no man confute thee? |
| 4 Car tu as dit : Ma doctrine (parole) est pure, et je suis sans tache en votre présence. | 4 For thou hast said: My word is pure, and I am clean in thy sight. |
| 5 Qu'il serait à souhaiter que Dieu te parlât, et qu'il ouvrît pour toi sa bouche, | 5 And I wish that God would speak with thee, and would open his lips to thee, |
| 6 pour te découvrir les secrets de sa sagesse, et la multiplicité des préceptes de sa loi, et pour te faire comprendre qu'il exige beaucoup moins de toi que ne mérite ton iniquité ! | 6 That he might shew thee the secrets of wisdom, and that his law is manifold, and thou mightest understand that he exacteth much less of thee, than thy iniquity deserveth. |
| 7 Prétends-tu sonder (Découvriras-tu) ce qui est caché en Dieu, et connaître parfaitement le Tout-Puissant ? | 7 Peradventure thou wilt comprehend the steps of God, and wilt find out the Almighty perfectly? |
| 8 Il est plus élevé que le ciel, que feras-tu ? Il est plus profond que l'enfer, comment (donc) le connaîtras-tu ? | 8 He is higher than heaven, and what wilt thou do ? he is deeper than hell, and how wilt thou know? |
| 9 Sa mesure dépasse la longueur de la terre et la largeur de la mer. | 9 The measure of him is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. |
| 10 S'il renverse tout, s'il confond toutes choses ensemble, qui pourra s'opposer à lui (le contredira) ? | 10 If he shall overturn all things, or shall press them together, who shall contradict him? |
| 11 Car il connaît la vanité des hommes, et, voyant l'iniquité, ne la considère-t-il pas ? | 11 For he knoweth the vanity of men, and when he seeth iniquity, doth he not consider it? |
| 12 L'homme vain s'élève jusqu'à l'orgueil, et il se croit né libre comme le poulain de l'âne sauvage (petit d'un onagre). | 12 A vain man is lifted up into pride, and thinketh himself born free like a wild ass's colt. |
| 13 Mais toi, tu as endurci ton cœur, et (cependant) tu as élevé tes mains vers Dieu. | 13 Rut thou hast hardened thy heart, and hast spread thy hands to him. |
| 14 Si tu bannis l'iniquité qui est dans tes mains, et que l'injustice ne demeure pas dans ta tente (on tabernacle), | 14 If thou wilt put away from thee the iniquity that is in thy hand, and lot not injustice remain in thy tabernacle: |
| 15 alors tu pourras lever ton visage sans tache ; tu seras stable, et tu ne craindras pas. | 15 Then mayst thou lift up thy face without spot, and thou shalt be steadfast, and shalt not fear. |
| 16 Tu oublieras même ta misère, et tu t'en souviendras comme d'eaux qui se sont écoulées. | 16 Thou shalt also forget misery, and remember it only as waters that are passed away. |
| 17 Sur le soir se lèvera pour toi comme l'éclat du midi ; et lorsque tu te croiras perdu, tu apparaîtras comme l'étoile du matin (Lucifer). | 17 And brightness like that of the noonday, shall arise to thee at evening: and when thou shalt think thyself consumed, thou shalt rise as the day star. |
| 18 L'espérance qui te sera proposée te remplira de confiance ; et, (même) entrant dans le sépulcre, tu dormiras en assurance. | 18 And thou shalt have confidence, hope being set before thee, and being buried thou shalt sleep secure. |
| 19 Tu te reposeras sans que personne ne te trouble, et plusieurs imploreront tes regards. | 19 Thou shalt rest, and there shall be none to make thee afraid: and many shall entreat thy face. |
| 20 Mais les yeux des méchants seront consumés ; pour eux pas de refuge, et ce que l'âme a en horreur, voilà leur espérance. | 20 But the eyes of the wicked shall decay, and the way to escape shall fail them, and their hope the abomination of the soul. |
