| 1 Alors le Seigneur dit à Moïse : Va trouver (le) Pharaon, car j'ai endurci son cœur et celui de ses serviteurs, afin que j'accomplisse sur lui mes prodiges (ces signes de ma puissance), | 1 And the Lord said to Moses: “Enter to Pharaoh. For I have hardened his heart, and that of his servants, so that I may accomplish these, my signs, in him, |
| 2 et que tu racontes à tes enfants et aux enfants de tes enfants de combien de plaies j'ai frappé les Egyptiens, et combien de merveilles (signes) j'ai faites parmi eux, et pour que vous sachiez que je suis le Seigneur. | 2 and so that you may describe to the ears of your sons and your grandsons how often I opposed the Egyptians and wrought my signs among them, and so that you may know that I am the Lord.” |
| 3 Moïse et Aaron vinrent donc trouver (le) Pharaon, et ils lui dirent : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur, le Dieu des Hébreux : Jusqu'à quand refuseras-tu de t'assujettir à moi ? Laisse aller mon peuple, afin qu'il me sacrifie. | 3 Therefore, Moses and Aaron entered to Pharaoh, and they said to him: “Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: How long will you be unwilling to be subject to me? Release my people to sacrifice to me. |
| 4 Si tu résistes encore et si tu ne veux pas le laisser aller, je ferai venir demain, dans ton pays, des sauterelles | 4 But if you resist, and you are unwilling to release them, behold, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your borders. |
| 5 qui couvriront la surface de la terre, en sorte qu'elle ne paraîtra plus, et qui mangeront tout ce que la grêle n'aura pas gâté ; car elles rongeront tous les arbres qui poussent dans les champs. | 5 And they shall cover the face of the earth, lest any part of it be seen. Yes, and what remains from the hail shall be eaten. For they will gnaw away all the trees that spring up in the fields. |
| 6 (Et) Elles rempliront tes maisons, les maisons de tes serviteurs et de tous les Egyptiens ; de sorte que ni tes pères ni tes aïeux n'en ont jamais vu une si grande quantité, depuis le temps qu'ils sont nés sur la terre jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Moïse se détourna (retira) aussitôt de devant (le) Pharaon, et se retira (sortit). | 6 And they will fill your houses, and those of your servants and of all the Egyptians: so many as your fathers and ancestors have not seen, from the time that they rose up over the earth, even until this present day.” And he turned himself away, and he departed from Pharaoh. |
| 7 Mais les serviteurs du Pharaon dirent à ce prince : Jusqu'à quand souffrirons-nous ce scandale ? Laissez aller ces gens, afin qu'ils sacrifient au Seigneur leur Dieu. Ne voyez-vous pas que l'Egypte est perdue ? | 7 Then the servants of Pharaoh said to him: “How long must we endure this scandal? Release the men, in order to sacrifice to the Lord their God. Do you not see that Egypt is perishing?” |
| 8 Ils rappelèrent donc Moïse et Aaron auprès du (de) Pharaon, lequel leur dit : Allez sacrifier au Seigneur votre Dieu ; mais qui sont ceux qui doivent y aller ? | 8 And they called back Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh, who said to them: “Go, sacrifice to the Lord your God. Who are they who would go?” |
| 9 Moïse lui répondit : Nous irons avec nos petits enfants et nos vieillards, avec nos fils et nos filles, avec nos brebis et nos troupeaux ; car c'est la fête solennelle du Seigneur notre Dieu. | 9 Moses said: “We will travel with our little ones and our elderly, with our sons and daughters, with our sheep and herds. For it is a solemnity of the Lord our God.” |
| 10 Le (Et) Pharaon lui repartit : Que le Seigneur soit avec vous en la même manière que je vous laisserai aller avec vos petits enfants. Qui doute que vous n'ayez un très mauvais dessein ? | 10 And Pharaoh responded: “So let the Lord be with you. But if I were to release you and your little ones, who would doubt that you intend some great wickedness? |
| 11 (Non,) Il n'en sera pas ainsi ; mais allez seulement vous, les hommes, et sacrifiez au Seigneur, car c'est ce que vous avez demandé vous-mêmes. Et aussitôt ils furent chassés de devant (le) Pharaon. | 11 It will not be so. However, go only with the men, and sacrifice to the Lord. For this, too, is what you yourselves requested.” And immediately they were cast out from the sight of Pharaoh. |
| 12 Alors (Mais) le Seigneur dit à Moïse : Etends ta main sur l'Egypte, pour faire venir les sauterelles, afin qu'elles montent sur la terre et qu'elles dévorent toute l'herbe qui est restée après la grêle. | 12 Then the Lord said to Moses: “Extend your hand over the land of Egypt, toward the locusts, so that they may rise up over it, and devour every plant which remains from the hail.” |
| 13 Moïse étendit donc sa verge sur la terre d'Egypte, et le Seigneur fit souffler un vent brûlant tout le jour et toute la nuit. Le matin, ce vent brûlant fit élever les sauterelles, | 13 And Moses extended his staff over the land of Egypt. And the Lord brought a burning wind all that day and night. And when morning came, the burning wind lifted up the locusts. |
| 14 qui vinrent fondre sur toute l'Egypte et s'arrêtèrent dans toutes les terres des Egyptiens, en une quantité si effroyable, que, ni avant ni après, on en vit jamais un si grand nombre. | 14 And they ascended over the entire land of Egypt. And they settled into all the parts of the Egyptians: innumerable, such as had not been before that time, nor ever would be thereafter. |
| 15 (Ainsi) Elles couvrirent toute la surface de la terre et ravagèrent tout. Elles mangèrent toute l'herbe et tout ce qui se trouva de fruits sur les arbres qui avaient échappé à la grêle ; et il ne resta absolument rien de vert, ni sur les arbres ni sur les herbes des champs, dans toute l'Egypte. | 15 And they covered the entire face of the land, laying waste to all things. And the plants of the land were devoured, along with whatever fruits were on the trees, which the hail had left behind. And nothing at all of the greenery remained on the trees or on the plants of the earth in all of Egypt. |
| 16 C'est pourquoi (le) Pharaon se hâta de faire venir Moïse et Aaron, et il leur dit : J'ai péché contre le Seigneur votre Dieu et contre vous. | 16 For this reason, Pharaoh hurriedly called Moses and Aaron, and he said to them: “I have sinned against the Lord your God, and against you. |
| 17 Mais pardonnez-moi ma faute encore cette fois, et priez le Seigneur votre Dieu, afin qu'il retire de moi cette mort. | 17 But now, release me from my sin even this time, and petition the Lord your God, so that he may take this death away from me.” |
| 18 Moïse, étant sorti de devant (le) Pharaon, pria le Seigneur, | 18 And Moses, departing from the sight of Pharaoh, prayed to the Lord. |
| 19 qui, ayant fait souffler un vent très violent du côté de l'occident, enleva les sauterelles et les jeta dans la mer Rouge. Il n'en demeura pas une seule dans toute l'Egypte. | 19 And he caused a very strong wind to blow from the west, and, seizing the locusts, it cast them into the Red Sea. There remained not so much as one in all the parts of Egypt. |
| 20 Mais le Seigneur endurcit le cœur du (de) Pharaon, et il ne laissa point encore aller les enfants d'Israël. | 20 And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh; neither did he release the sons of Israel. |
| 21 Le Seigneur dit donc à Moïse : Etends ta main vers le ciel, et qu'il se forme sur la terre de l'Egypte des ténèbres si épaisses, qu'on puisse les toucher. | 21 Then the Lord said to Moses: “Extend your hand into the sky. And let there be a darkness over the land of Egypt, so dense that they may be able to feel it.” |
| 22 Moïse étendit sa main vers le ciel, et des ténèbres horribles couvrirent toute la terre d'Egypte pendant trois jours. | 22 And Moses extended his hand into the sky. And there came a horrible darkness in the entire land of Egypt for three days. |
| 23 Nul ne vit son frère ni ne se remua du lieu où il était ; mais le jour luisait partout où habitaient les enfants d'Israël. | 23 No one saw his brother, nor moved himself out of the place where he was. But wherever the sons of Israel were living, there was light. |
| 24 Alors (le) Pharaon fit venir Moïse et Aaron, et leur dit : Allez sacrifier au Seigneur ; que vos brebis seulement et vos troupeaux demeurent ici, et que vos petits enfants aillent avec vous. | 24 And Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron, and he said to them: “Go, sacrifice to the Lord. Only let your sheep and herds remain behind. Your little ones may go with you.” |
| 25 Moïse lui répondit : Tu nous donneras aussi des victimes et des holocaustes pour les offrir au Seigneur notre Dieu. | 25 Moses said: “You must also permit us victims and holocausts, which we may offer to the Lord our God. |
| 26 Tous nos troupeaux marcheront avec nous, et il ne demeurera pas une corne de leurs pieds, parce que nous en avons besoin pour le culte du Seigneur notre Dieu ; d'autant plus que nous ne savons pas ce qui doit lui être immolé, jusqu'à ce que nous soyons arrivés au lieu même (qu'il nous a marqué). | 26 All the flocks shall travel with us. Not one hoof of them shall remain behind. For they are necessary for the worship of the Lord our God, especially since we do not know what ought to be immolated, until we arrive at the very place.” |
| 27 Mais le Seigneur endurcit le cœur du (de) Pharaon, et il ne voulut point les laisser aller. | 27 But the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he was not willing to release them. |
| 28 Le (Et) Pharaon dit encore à Moïse : Retire-toi, et garde-toi bien de paraître jamais devant moi ; car le jour que tu te montreras à moi, tu mourras. | 28 And Pharaoh said to Moses: “Withdraw from me, and beware that you no longer see my face. On whatever day you will appear in my sight, you shall die.” |
| 29 Moïse répondit : Ce que tu ordonnes sera fait ; je ne verrai plus jamais ton visage. | 29 Moses responded: “So be it, just as you have said. I will no longer see your face.” |
