| 1 Alors tous les anciens d'Israël, avec les princes des tribus, et tous les chefs des familles des enfants d'Israël, s'assemblèrent, et vinrent trouver le roi Salomon à Jérusalem, pour transporter l'arche de l'alliance du Seigneur de la ville (cité) de David, c'est-à-dire de Sion. | 1 Then all the ancients of Israel with the princes of the tribes, and the heads of the families of the children of Israel were assembled to king Solomon in Jerusalem: that they might carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of the city of David, that is, out of Sion. |
| 2 Tout Israël s'assembla aussi auprès du roi Salomon en un jour solennel du mois d'Ethanim, qui est le septième mois. | 2 And all Israel assembled themselves to king Solomon on the festival day in the month of Ethanim, the same is the seventh month. |
| 3 Tous les anciens d'Israël étant venus, les prêtres prirent l'arche du Seigneur, | 3 And all the ancients of Israel came, and the priests took up the ark, |
| 4 et la portèrent avec le tabernacle de l'alliance, et tous les ustensiles (les vases) du sanctuaire qui étaient dans le tabernacle ; et les prêtres et les lévites les portèrent. | 4 And carried the ark of the Lord, and the tabernacle of the covenant, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, that were in the tabernacle: and the priests and the Levites carried them. |
| 5 (Or) Le roi Salomon, et tout le peuple qui s'était assemblé auprès de lui, marchaient devant l'arche, et ils immolaient une multitude de brebis et de bœufs, sans prix et sans nombre. | 5 And king Solomon, and all the multitude of Israel, that were assembled unto him went with him before the ark, and they sacrificed sheep and oxen that could not be counted or numbered. |
| 6 Les prêtres portèrent l'arche de l'alliance du Seigneur au lieu qui lui était destiné, dans l'oracle du temple, dans le Saint des saints, sous les ailes des chérubins. | 6 And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the Lord into its place, into the oracle of the temple, into the holy of holies under the wings of the cherubims. |
| 7 Car les chérubins étendaient leurs ailes au-dessus du lieu où était l'arche, et ils couvraient l'arche et ses barres (leviers). | 7 For the cherubims spread forth their wings over the place of the ark, and covered the art, and the staves thereof above. |
| 8 Et ils retirèrent les barres (leviers) en avant, de sorte qu'on en voyait les extrémités dès l'entrée du sanctuaire devant l'oracle, mais elles ne paraissaient point au-dehors ; et elles sont demeurées là jusqu'à ce jour. | 8 And whereas the staves stood out, the ends of them were seen without in the sanctuary before the oracle, but were not seen farther out, and there they have been unto this day. |
| 9 Or il n'y avait dans l'arche que les deux tables de pierre que Moïse y avait mises sur l'Horeb, lorsque le Seigneur fit alliance avec les enfants d'Israël, aussitôt après leur sortie d'Egypte. | 9 Now in the ark there was nothing else but the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb, when the Lord made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt. |
| 10 Lorsque les prêtres furent sortis du sanctuaire, une nuée remplit la maison du Seigneur ; | 10 And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the sanctuary, that a cloud filled the house of the Lord, |
| 11 et les prêtres ne pouvaient plus s'y tenir, ni y accomplir leurs fonctions à cause de la nuée, car la gloire du Seigneur avait rempli la maison du Seigneur. | 11 And the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of the Lord. |
| 12 Alors Salomon dit : Le Seigneur a dit qu'il habiterait dans une (la) nuée. | 12 Then Solomon said: The Lord said that he would dwell in a cloud. |
| 13 J'ai bâti une maison qui sera votre demeure, et votre trône très solide à tout jamais. | 13 Building I have built a house for thy dwelling, to be thy most firm throne for ever. |
| 14 Et le roi tourna son visage, et bénit toute l'assemblée d'Israël. Car tout Israël était là, debout. | 14 And the king turned his face, and blessed all the assembly of Israel: for all the assembly of Israel stood. |
| 15 Et Salomon dit : Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, qui a parlé de sa bouche à David mon père, et qui par sa puissance a exécuté ce qu'il avait promis en disant : | 15 And Solomon said: Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, who spoke with his mouth to David my father, and with his own hands hath accomplished it, saying: |
| 16 Depuis le jour où j'ai (re)tiré d'Egypte Israël mon peuple, je n'ai point choisi de ville dans toutes les tribus d'Israël, afin qu'on m'y bâtît une maison, et que mon nom y fût établi ; mais j'ai choisi David, afin qu'il fût chef de mon peuple Israël. | 16 Since the day that I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel, for a house to be built, that my name might be there: but I chose David to be over my people Israel. |
| 17 Et David, mon père, avait voulu bâtir une maison au nom du Seigneur Dieu d'Israël. | 17 And David my father would have built a house to the name of the Lord the God of Israel: |
| 18 Mais le Seigneur dit à David mon père : Quand tu as pensé dans ton cœur à bâtir une maison à mon nom, tu as bien fait de prendre en toi-même cette résolution. | 18 And the Lord said to David my father: Whereas thou hast thought in thy heart to build a house to my name, thou hast done well in having this same thing in thy mind. |
| 19 Néanmoins ce n'est pas toi qui me bâtiras une maison ; mais ton fils qui sortira de ton sein (tes flancs) bâtira, lui, une maison à mon nom. | 19 Nevertheless thou shalt not build me a house, but thy son, that shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build a house to my name. |
| 20 Le Seigneur a réalisé la parole qu'il avait dite ; j'ai succédé à David mon père, je me suis assis sur le trône d'Israël, comme l'avait dit le Seigneur, et j'ai bâti une maison au nom du Seigneur Dieu d'Israël. | 20 The Lord hath performed his word which he spoke : and I stand in the room of David my father, and sit upon the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised: and have built a house to the name of the Lord the God of Israel. |
| 21 J'ai établi ici le lieu de l'arche, où est l'alliance que le Seigneur fit avec nos pères, lorsqu'ils sortirent du pays d'Egypte. | 21 And I have set there a place for the ark, wherein is the covenant of the Lord, which he made with our fathers, when they came out of the land of Egypt. |
| 22 Salomon se tint ensuite devant l'autel du Seigneur, à la vue de toute l'assemblée d'Israël ; et il étendit ses mains vers le ciel, | 22 And Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the sight of the assembly of Israel, and spread forth his hands towards heaven; |
| 23 et il dit : Seigneur Dieu d'Israël, il n'y a pas de Dieu qui vous ressemble, ni là-haut dans le ciel, ni ici-bas sur la terre ; à vous, qui gardez l'alliance et la miséricorde envers vos serviteurs qui marchent devant vous de tout leur cœur ; | 23 And said: Lord God of Israel, there is no God like thee in heaven above, or on earth beneath: who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that have walked before thee with all their heart. |
| 24 qui avez gardé à votre serviteur David, mon père, ce que vous lui avez promis : Votre bouche l'a prononcé, et vos mains l'ont accompli, comme ce jour le prouve. | 24 Who hast kept with thy servant David my father what thou hast promised him: with thy mouth thou didst speak, and with thy hands thou hast performed, as this day proveth. |
| 25 Maintenant donc Seigneur Dieu d'Israël, conservez à votre serviteur David, mon père, ce que vous lui avez promis, en disant : Tu ne manqueras point d'héritiers qui soient assis devant moi sur le trône d'Israël, pourvu néanmoins qu'ils veillent sur leurs voies, de manière à marcher en ma présence comme tu as marché devant moi. | 25 Now therefore, O Lord God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father what thou hast spoken to him, saying: There shall not be taken away of thee a man in my sight, to sit on the throne of Israel: yet so that thy children take heed to their way, that they walk before me as thou hast walked in my sight. |
| 26 Accomplissez donc, Seigneur Dieu d'Israël, les paroles que vous avez dites à votre serviteur David, mon père. | 26 And now, Lord God of Israel, let thy words be established, which thou hast spoken to thy servant David my father |
| 27 Mais est-il croyable que Dieu habite véritablement sur la terre ? Car si les cieux et les cieux des cieux ne peuvent vous contenir, combien moins cette maison que j'ai bâtie ! | 27 Is it then to be thought that God should indeed dwell upon earth? for if heaven, and the heavens of heavens cannot contain thee, how much less this house which I have built? |
| 28 Mais ayez égard, Seigneur mon Dieu, à l'oraison de votre serviteur et à ses prières ; écoutez l'hymne et l'oraison que votre serviteur profère devant vous aujourd'hui ; | 28 But have regard to the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplications, O Lord my God: hear the hymn and the prayer, which thy servant prayeth before thee this day: |
| 29 afin que vos yeux soient ouverts jour et nuit sur cette maison, sur cette maison dont vous avez dit : Mon nom sera là ; afin que vous exauciez la prière que votre serviteur vous adresse en ce lieu ; | 29 That thy eyes may be open upon this house night and day: upon the house of which thou hast said: My name shall be there: that thou mayest hearken to the prayer, which thy servant prayeth in this place to thee. |
| 30 afin que vous exauciez la prière de votre serviteur et toutes celles que votre peuple Israël vous offrira en ce lieu ; et vous les exaucerez du lieu de votre demeure dans le ciel, et, les ayant exaucées, vous leur ferez miséricorde. | 30 That thou mayest hearken to the supplication of thy servant and of thy people Israel, whatsoever they shall pray for in this place, and hear them in the place of thy dwelling in heaven; and when thou hearest, shew them mercy. |
| 31 Si un homme pèche contre son prochain, et s'il a quelque serment par lequel il soit lié, et s'il vient dans votre maison, devant votre autel, à cause du serment, | 31 If any man trespass against his neighbour, and have an oath upon him, wherewith he is bound: and come because of the oath before thy altar to thy house, |
| 32 vous écouterez du ciel et vous ferez justice à vos serviteurs, condamnant le coupable (l'impie), et faisant retomber sa perfidie (voie) sur sa tête, et justifiant le juste en lui rendant selon sa justice. | 32 Then hear thou in heaven: and do, and judge thy servants, condemning the wicked, and bringing his way upon his own head, and justifying the just, and rewarding him according to his justice. |
| 33 Si votre peuple Israël fuit devant ses ennemis parce qu'il aura péché contre vous, et si, faisant pénitence et rendant gloire à votre nom, ils viennent vous prier et vous implorer dans cette maison, | 33 If thy people Israel shall fly before their enemies, (because they will sin against thee,) and doing penance, and confessing to thy name, shall come, and pray, and make supplications to thee in this house: |
| 34 exaucez-les du ciel, et pardonnez le péché de votre peuple Israël, et ramenez-les dans la terre que vous avez donnée à leurs pères. | 34 Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel, and bring them back to the land which thou gavest to their fathers. |
| 35 Si le ciel est fermé, et s'il ne pleut pas à cause de leurs péchés, et que, priant en ce lieu, ils fassent pénitence en (pour honorer) votre nom, et se convertissent de leurs péchés à cause de leur affliction, | 35 If heaven shall be shut up, and there shall be no rain, because of their sins, and they praying in this place, shall do penance to thy name, and shall be converted from their sins, by occasion of their afflictions: |
| 36 exaucez-les du ciel, et pardonnez les péchés de vos serviteurs et de votre peuple Israël et montrez-leur la voie droite par laquelle ils doivent marcher ; et répandez la pluie sur votre terre que vous avez donnée en possession à votre peuple. | 36 Then hear thou them in heaven, and forgive the sins of thy servants, and of thy people Israel: and shew them the good way wherein they should walk, and give rain upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people in possession. |
| 37 S'il survient dans le pays ou famine, ou peste, ou corruption de l'air, ou la nielle (rouille), ou la sauterelle, ou la rouille ; ou si l'ennemi de votre peuple l'afflige en assiégeant ses portes ; ou s'il est frappé de quelque plaie et de quelque infirmité ; | 37 If a famine arise in the land, or a pestilence, or corrupt air, or blasting, or locust, or mildew, if their enemy afflict them besieging the gates, whatsoever plague, whatsoever infirmity, |
| 38 pour toute malédiction (anathème) ou imprécation qui arrivera à tout homme de votre peuple Israël ; si quelqu'un connaît la plaie de son cœur, et étend ses mains vers vous dans cette maison, | 38 Whatsoever curse or imprecation shall happen to any man of thy people Israel: when a man shall know the wound of his own heart, and shall spread forth his hands in this house, |
| 39 vous l'exaucerez du ciel, du lieu de votre demeure, vous lui serez de nouveau propice, et vous agirez de manière à donner à chacun selon toutes ses voies, selon que vous verrez son cœur, car vous seul connaissez le cœur de tous les enfants des hommes, | 39 Then hear thou in heaven, in the place of thy dwelling, and forgive, and do so as to give to every one according to his ways, as thou shalt see his heart (for thou only knowest the heart of all the children of men) |
| 40 afin que vos serviteurs vous craignent tant qu'ils vivront sur la face de la terre que vous avez donnée à nos pères. | 40 That they may fear thee all the days that they live upon the face of the land, which thou hast given to our fathers. |
| 41 De plus, lorsqu'un étranger qui ne sera point de votre peuple Israël viendra d'un pays lointain, à cause de votre nom, car la grandeur de votre nom, la force de votre main, de votre bras | 41 Moreover also the stranger, who is not of thy people Israel, when he shall come out of a far country for thy name's sake, (for they shall hear every where of thy great name and thy mighty hand, |
| 42 étendu seront connus partout ; lors donc qu'il viendra prier en ce lieu, | 42 And thy stretched out arm,) so when he shall come, and shall pray in this place, |
| 43 vous l'exaucerez du ciel, du firmament où vous demeurez (dans votre demeure stable), et vous ferez tout ce que l'étranger vous aura demandé ; afin que tous les peuples de la terre apprennent à craindre votre nom comme votre peuple Israël, et qu'ils éprouvent que votre nom a été invoqué sur cette maison que j'ai bâtie. | 43 Then hear thou in heaven, in the firmament of thy dwelling place, and do all those things, for which that stranger shall call upon thee: that all the people of the earth may learn to fear thy name, as do thy people Israel, and may prove that thy name is called upon on this house, which I have built. |
| 44 Lorsque votre peuple ira au combat contre ses ennemis, par quelque chemin que vous les ayez envoyés, ils vous prieront, tournés vers la ville que vous avez choisie, et vers la maison que j'ai bâtie à votre nom ; | 44 If thy people go out to war against their enemies, by what way soever thou shalt send them, they shall pray to thee towards the way of the city, which thou hast chosen, and towards the house, which I have built to thy name: |
| 45 vous exaucerez du ciel leurs supplications et leurs prières, et vous leur rendrez justice. | 45 And then hear thou in heaven their prayers, and their supplications, and do judgment for them. |
| 46 Que s'ils pèchent contre vous, car il n'y a point d'homme qui ne pèche, et qu'étant irrité vous les livriez à leurs ennemis, et qu'ils soient emmenés captifs dans le pays de leurs ennemis, au loin ou tout près ; | 46 But if they sin against thee (for there is no man who sinneth not) and thou being angry deliver them up to their enemies, so that they be led away captives into the land of their enemies far or near; |
| 47 s'ils font pénitence du fond du (en leur) cœur dans le lieu de leur captivité, et s'ils se convertissent et vous prient dans leur captivité, en disant : Nous avons péché, nous avons commis l'iniquité, nous avons fait des actions impies ; | 47 Then if they do penance in their heart in the place of captivity, and being converted make supplication to thee in their captivity, saying: We have sinned, we have done unjustly, we have committed wickedness: |
| 48 s'ils reviennent à vous de tout leur cœur et de toute leur âme dans le pays de leurs ennemis où ils auront été emmenés captifs, et s'ils vous prient tournés vers le chemin de la terre que vous avez donnée à leurs pères, et de la ville que vous avez choisie, et du temple que j'ai bâti à votre nom, | 48 And return to thee with all their heart, and all their soul, in the land of their enemies, to which they had been led captives: and pray to thee towards the way of their land, which thou gavest to their fathers, and of the city which thou hast chosen, and of the temple which I have built to thy name: |
| 49 vous exaucerez du ciel, du firmament où est (dans le lieu stable de) votre trône, leurs supplications et leurs prières, et vous leur ferez justice ; | 49 Then hear thou in heaven, in the firmament of thy throne, their prayers, and their supplications, and do judgment for them: |
| 50 et vous serez propice à votre peuple qui a péché contre vous, et à toutes les iniquités par lesquelles ils ont prévariqué contre votre loi (vous), et vous inspirerez de la pitié à ceux qui les auront emmenés captifs, afin qu'ils aient compassion d'eux ; | 50 And forgive thy people, that have sinned against thee, and all their iniquities, by which they have transgressed against thee: and give them mercy before them that have made them captives, that they may have compassion on them. |
| 51 car c'est votre peuple et votre héritage, que vous avez (re)tirés du pays d'Egypte, du milieu d'une fournaise de fer. | 51 For they are thy people, and thy inheritance, whom thou hast brought out of the land of Egypt, from the midst of the furnace of iron. |
| 52 Que vos yeux soient donc ouverts aux prières de votre serviteur et de votre peuple Israël, afin que vous les exauciez dans toutes les demandes qu'ils vous feront. | 52 That thy eyes may be open to the supplication of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, to hear them in all things for which they shall call upon thee. |
| 53 Car c'est vous, Seigneur Dieu, qui les avez séparés de tous les peuples de la terre pour en faire votre héritage, selon que vous l'avez déclaré par Moïse votre serviteur, lorsque vous avez (re)tiré nos pères d'Egypte. | 53 For thou hast separated them to thyself for an inheritance from among all the people of the earth, as thou hast spoken by Moses thy servant, when thou broughtest our fathers out of Egypt, O Lord God. |
| 54 Or, quand Salomon eut achevé d'offrir au Seigneur cette prière et cette supplication, il se leva de devant l'autel du Seigneur ; car il avait mis les deux genoux en terre, et il avait étendu ses mains vers le ciel. | 54 And it came to pass, when Solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and supplication to the Lord, that he rose from before the altar of the Lord: for he had fixed both knees on the ground, and had spread his hands towards heaven. |
| 55 Il se tint donc debout, et bénit toute l'assemblée d'Israël en disant à haute voix : | 55 And he stood and blessed all the assembly of Israel with a, loud voice, saying: |
| 56 Béni soit le Seigneur, qui a donné la paix à son peuple Israël, selon tout ce qu'il avait promis. Il n'est pas tombé une seule parole de tous les biens qu'il (nous) avait promis par Moïse son serviteur. | 56 Blessed be the Lord, who hath given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he promised: there hath not failed so much as one word of all the good things that he promised by his servant Moses. |
| 57 Que le Seigneur notre Dieu soit avec nous comme il a été avec nos pères, ne nous abandonnant pas et ne nous rejetant pas ; | 57 The Lord our God be with us, as he was with our fathers, and not leave us, nor cast us off: |
| 58 mais qu'il incline nos cœurs vers lui, afin que nous marchions dans toutes ses voies, et que nous gardions ses préceptes et ses cérémonies, et toutes les ordonnances qu'il a prescrites à nos pères. | 58 But may he incline our hearts to himself, that we may walk in all his ways, and keep his commandments, and his ceremonies, and all his judgments which he commanded our fathers. |
| 59 Et que les paroles par lesquelles j'ai prié devant le Seigneur soient présentes jour et nuit au Seigneur notre Dieu, afin que chaque jour il fasse justice à son serviteur et à son peuple Israël ; | 59 And let these my words, wherewith I have prayed before the Lord, he nigh unto the Lord our God day and night, that he may do judgment for his servant, and for his people Israel day by day: |
| 60 afin que tous les peuples de la terre sachent que le Seigneur est Dieu, et qu'il n'y en a point d'autre que lui. | 60 That all the people of the earth may know, that the Lord he is God, and there is no other besides him. |
| 61 Que notre cœur aussi soit parfait avec le Seigneur notre Dieu, afin que nous marchions selon ses préceptes (décrets), et que nous gardions ses commandements, comme en ce jour. | 61 Let our hearts also be perfect with the Lord our God, that we may walk in his statutes, and keep his commandments, as at this day. |
| 62 Le roi donc, et tout Israël avec lui, immolèrent des victimes devant le Seigneur. | 62 And the king, and all Israel him, offered victims before the Lord. |
| 63 Et Salomon égorgea et immola au Seigneur comme hosties pacifiques vingt-deux mille bœufs, et cent vingt mille brebis, et le roi avec les enfants d'Israël dédièrent le temple du Seigneur. | 63 And Solomon slew victims of peace offerings, which he sacrificed to the Lord, two and twenty thousand oxen, and hundred and twenty thousand sheep: so the king, and the children of Israel dedicated the temple of the Lord. |
| 64 En ce jour-là le roi consacra le milieu du parvis qui était devant la maison du Seigneur ; car il y offrit des holocaustes, des sacrifices et la graisse des hosties pacifiques, car l'autel d'airain qui était devant le Seigneur était trop petit, et ne pouvait suffire pour les holocaustes, les sacrifices et les graisses des hosties pacifiques. | 64 In that day the king sanctified the middle of the court that was before the house of the Lord: for there he offered the holocaust, and sacrifice, and fat of the peace offerings: because the brazen altar that was before the Lord, was too little to receive the holocaust, and sacrifice, and fat of the peace offerings. |
| 65 Salomon fit donc alors une (la) fête célèbre, et tout Israël la fit aussi avec lui, multitude immense venue depuis l'entrée d'Emath jusqu'au fleuve d'Egypte, devant le Seigneur notre Dieu, pendant sept jours et sept jours, c'est-à-dire, quatorze jours. | 65 And Solomon made at the same time a solemn feast, and all Israel with him, a great multitude from the entrance of Emath to the river of Egypt, before the Lord our God, seven days and seven days, that is, fourteen days. |
| 66 Et le huitième jour il renvoya le peuple, et bénissant le roi, ils s'en retournèrent dans leurs maisons (tabernacles), joyeux et le cœur plein d'allégresse pour tous les biens que le Seigneur avait faits à David son serviteur et à son peuple Israël. | 66 And on the eighth day he sent away the people: and they blessed the king, and went to their dwellings rejoicing, and glad in heart for all the good things that the Lord had done for David his servant, and for Israel his people. |
