| 1 La sagesse de celui qui est humble relèvera sa tête, et le fera asseoir au milieu des grands. | 1 Wisdom lifteth up the head of him that is of low degree, and maketh him to sit among great men. |
| 2 Ne loue pas un homme pour sa beauté, et ne le méprise point pour son apparence extérieure. | 2 Commend not a man for his beauty; neither abhor a man for his outward appearance. |
| 3 L'abeille est petite parmi les volatiles, et néanmoins son fruit est ce qu'il y a de plus doux. | 3 The bee is little among such as fly; but her fruit is the chief of sweet things. |
| 4 Ne te glorifie jamais de tes vêtements, et ne t'enorgueillis point au jour où tu seras en honneur; car le Très-Haut fait seul des oeuvres admirables, et glorieuses, et cachées, et inconnues. | 4 Boast not of thy clothing and raiment, and exalt not thyself in the day of honour: for the works of the Lord are wonderful, and his works among men are hidden. |
| 5 Des princes nombreux se sont assis sur le trône, et tel auquel on ne pensait pas a porté le diadème. | 5 Many kings have sat down upon the ground; and one that was never thought of hath worn the crown. |
| 6 Beaucoup de puissants ont été violemment châtiés, et des hommes glorieux ont été livrés entre les mains des autres. | 6 Many mighty men have been greatly disgraced; and the honourable delivered into other men's hands. |
| 7 Avant de t'informer, ne blâme personne, et quand tu auras interrogé, reprends avec équité. | 7 Blame not before thou hast examined the truth: understand first, and then rebuke. |
| 8 Avant d'avoir écouté ne réponds rien, et ne prends pas la parole au milieu du discours d'un autre. | 8 Answer not before thou hast heard the cause: neither interrupt men in the midst of their talk. |
| 9 Ne dispute point sur une chose qui ne te regarde pas, et ne t'assieds pas pour juger avec les pécheurs. | 9 Strive not in a matter that concerneth thee not; and sit not in judgment with sinners. |
| 10 Mon fils, ne t'engage pas dans une multiplicité d'actions; car si tu es riche, tu ne seras pas exempt de faute. Si tu poursuis trop, tu ne pourras pas y suffire, et si tu cours en avant, tu n'échapperas pas. | 10 My son, meddle not with many matters: for if thou meddle much, thou shalt not be innocent; and if thou follow after, thou shalt not obtain, neither shalt thou escape by fleeing. |
| 11 Tel travaille, et se hâte, et souffre; mais, comme il est impie, plus il en fait, moins il est riche. | 11 There is one that laboureth, and taketh pains, and maketh haste, and is so much the more behind. |
| 12 Tel est sans vigueur, a besoin d'être aidé, manque de force et vit dans une extrême pauvreté; | 12 Again, there is another that is slow, and hath need of help, wanting ability, and full of poverty; yet the eye of the Lord looked upon him for good, and set him up from his low estate, |
| 13 mais l'oeil de Dieu le regarde favorablement, le tire de son humiliation et lui relève la tête, et beaucoup sont dans l'admiration à son sujet et rendent gloire à Dieu. | 13 And lifted up his head from misery; so that many that saw from him is peace over all the |
| 14 Les biens et les maux, la vie et la mort, la pauvreté et la richesse, viennent de Dieu. | 14 Prosperity and adversity, life and death, poverty and riches, come of the Lord. |
| 15 C'est en Dieu que se trouvent la sagesse, l'instruction et la science de la loi. La charité et les bonnes oeuvres ont leur source en Lui. | 15 Wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of the law, are of the Lord: love, and the way of good works, are from him. |
| 16 L'erreur et les ténèbres ont été créées avec les pécheurs, et ceux qui se complaissent dans le mal vieillissent dans le péché. | 16 Error and darkness had their beginning together with sinners: and evil shall wax old with them that glory therein. |
| 17 Le don de Dieu demeure aux justes, et le progrès aura un succès éternel. | 17 The gift of the Lord remaineth with the ungodly, and his favour bringeth prosperity for ever. |
| 18 Tel s'enrichit par sa grande épargne, et la part de sa réconpense | 18 There is that waxeth rich by his wariness and pinching, and this his the portion of his reward: |
| 19 consiste à dire: J'ai trouvé le repos pour moi, et maintenant je mangerai mon bien tout seul. | 19 Whereas he saith, I have found rest, and now will eat continually of my goods; and yet he knoweth not what time shall come upon him, and that he must leave those things to others, and die. |
| 20 Et il ne consiidère pas que le temps s'écoule, et que la mort approche, et qu'il laissera tout à d'autres, et qu'il mourra. | 20 Be stedfast in thy covenant, and be conversant therein, and wax old in thy work. |
| 21 Demeure fidèle à ton alliance; entretiens-toi avec elle, et vieillis dans la pratique de ce qui t'a été commandé. | 21 Marvel not at the works of sinners; but trust in the Lord, and abide in thy labour: for it is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord on the sudden to make a poor man rich. |
| 22 Ne t'arrête point aux oeuvres des pécheurs; mets ta confiance en Dieu, et demeure à ta place. | 22 The blessing of the Lord is in the reward of the godly, and suddenly he maketh his blessing flourish. |
| 23 Car il est facile aux yeux de Dieu d'enrichir tout à coup le pauvre. | 23 Say not, What profit is there of my service? and what good things shall I have hereafter? |
| 24 La bénédiction de Dieu se hâte de récompenser le juste, et Il lui fait porter du fruit en peu de temps. | 24 Again, say not, I have enough, and possess many things, and what evil shall I have hereafter? |
| 25 Ne dis point: Qu'ai-je besoin d'agir? et quels biens m'en reviendront? | 25 In the day of prosperity there is a forgetfulness of affliction: and in the day of affliction there is no more remembrance of prosperity. |
| 26 Ne dis point: Ce que j'ai me suffit; et quel mal ai-je à redouter? | 26 For it is an easy thing unto the Lord in the day of death to reward a man according to his ways. |
| 27 Au jour du bonheur n'oublie pas le malheur, et au jour du malheur n'oublie pas le bonheur. | 27 The affliction of an hour maketh a man forget pleasure: and in his end his deeds shall be discovered. |
| 28 Car il est aisé à Dieu, au jour de la mort, de rendre à chacun selon ses voies. | 28 Judge none blessed before his death: for a man shall be known in his children. |
| 29 Le mal présent fait oublier de grandes délices, et à la fin de l'homme ses oeuvres seront mises à nu. | 29 Bring not every man into thine house: for the deceitful man hath many trains. |
| 30 Ne loue aucun homme avant sa mort, car c'est par ses fils qu'on reconnaît un homme. | 30 Like as a partridge taken [and kept] in a cage, so is the heart of the proud; and like as a spy, watcheth he for thy fall: |
| 31 N'introduis pas toute sorte de personnes dans ta maison, car les pièges du fourbe sont nombreux. | 31 For he lieth in wait, and turneth good into evil, and in things worthy praise will lay blame upon thee. |
| 32 Comme il sort une haleine corrompue de l'estomac gâté, comme la perdrix est conduite au filet, et le chevreuil au piège, ainsi est le coeur des superbes et de celui qui épie pour voir la chute de son prochain. | 32 Of a spark of fire a heap of coals is kindled: and a sinful man layeth wait for blood. |
| 33 Car il dresse des embûches, changeant le bien en mal, et il imprime des taches sur les choses les plus pures. | 33 Take heed of a mischievous man, for he worketh wickedness; lest he bring upon thee a perpetual blot. |
| 34 Une seule étincelle allume un incendie, et un seul fourbe multiplie les meurtres, et le pécheur tend des pièges pour répandre le sang. | 34 Receive a stranger into thine house, and he will disturb thee, and turn thee out of thine own. |
| 35 Garde-toi de l'homme pernicieux qui fabrique le mal, de peur qu'il n'amène à jamais la moquerie sur toi. | |
| 36 Admets l'étranger chez toi, et il te renversera en y mettant le trouble, et il t'aliénera tes proches. | |
