| 3 Souffrez que je parle, et ensuite riez, si cela vous plaît, de mes discours. | 3 Suffer me, and I will speak, and after, if you please, laugh at my words. |
| 4 Est-ce avec un homme que je dispute? N'est-ce pas à bon droit que je m'attriste? | 4 Is my debate against man, that I should not have just reason to be troubled? |
| 5 Jetez les yeux sur moi, et soyez frappés d'étonnement, et mettez le doigt sur votre bouche. | 5 Hearken to me and be astonished, and lay your finger on your mouth. |
| 6 Et moi, quand je m'en souviens, j'en suis épouvanté et j'en tremble de tout mon corps. | 6 As for me, when I remember, I am afraid, and trembling taketh hold on my flesh. |
| 7 Pourquoi donc les impies vivent-ils? Pourquoi sont-ils si élevés et rendus puissants par les richesses? | 7 Why then do the wicked live, are they advanced, and strengthened with riches? |
| 8 Leur race se perpétue devant eux; la foule de leurs proches et de leurs petits enfants est en leur présence. | 8 Their seed continueth before them, a multitude of kinsmen, and of children's children in their sight. |
| 9 Leurs maisons jouissent d'une profonde paix, et la verge de Dieu ne les touche point. | 9 Their houses are secure and peaceable, and the rod of God is not upon them. |
| 10 Leur vache conçoit et conserve son fruit, leur génisse met bas et n'avorte point. | 10 Their cattle have conceived, and failed not: their cow has calved, and is not deprived of her fruit. |
| 11 Leurs enfants sortent comme des troupeaux, leurs nouveau-nés bondissent en se jouant. | 11 Their little ones go out like a flock, and their children dance and play. |
| 12 Ils tiennent le tambourin et la harpe, et ils se réjouissent au son de la flûte de Pan. | 12 They take the timbrel, and the harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ. |
| 13 Ils passent leurs jours dans le bonheur, et soudain ils descendent dans le tombeau. | 13 They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment they go down to hell. |
| 14 Ils ont dit à Dieu : Retirez-vous de nous, nous ne voulons point connaître Vos voies. | 14 Who have said to God: Depart from us, we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. |
| 15 Qu'est le Tout-Puissant pour que nous Le servions? Et quel intérêt avons-nous à Le prier? | 15 Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what doth it profit us if we pray to him? |
| 16 Mais puisque leurs biens ne sont pas en leur pouvoir, loin de moi le conseil des impies! | 16 Yet because their good things are not in their hand, may the counsel of the wicked be far from me. |
| 17 Combien de fois voit-on s'éteindre la lumière des impies, et un déluge de maux leur survenir, et Dieu leur partager les douleurs dans Sa colère! | 17 How often shall the lamp of the wicked be put out, and a deluge come upon them, and he shall distribute the sorrows of his wrath? |
| 18 Ils sont comme la paille en face du vent, et comme la poussière que disperse un tourbillon. | 18 They shall be as chaff before the face of the wind, and as ashes which the whirlwind scattereth. |
| 19 Dieu réserve à leurs fils la peine du père, Dieu le frappera lui-même, et alors il comprendra. | 19 God shall lay up the sorrow of the father for his children: and when he shall repay, then shall he know. |
| 20 Il verra de ses yeux sa propre ruine, et il boira de la fureur du Tout-Puissant. | 20 His eyes shall see his own destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty. |
| 21 Car que lui importe ce que deviendra sa maison après lui, quand même Dieu lui retrancherait la moitié de ses années? | 21 For what is it to him what befalleth his house after him: and if the number of his months be diminished by one half? |
| 22 Qui entreprendra d'enseigner la science à Dieu, Lui qui juge les grands? | 22 Shall any one teach God knowledge, who judgeth those that are high? |
| 23 L'un meurt robuste et sain, riche et heureux; | 23 One man dieth strong, and hale, rich and happy. |
| 24 ses entrailles sont chargées de graisse, et ses os arrosés de moelle. | 24 His bowels are full of fat, and his bones are moistened with marrow. |
| 25 L'autre meurt dans l'amertume de son âme, sans aucun bien; | 25 But another dieth in bitterness of soul without any riches: |
| 26 et néanmoins ils dorment tous deux dans la poussière, et les vers les recouvrent tous deux. | 26 And yet they shall sleep together in the dust, and worms shall cover them. |
| 27 Je connais bien vos pensées, et vos jugements injustes contre moi. | 27 Surely I know your thoughts, and your unjust judgments against me. |
| 28 Car vous dites : Où est la maison du prince, et où sont les tentes des impies? | 28 For you say: Where is the house of the prince ? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked? |
| 29 Interrogez quelqu'un des voyageurs, et vous verrez qu'il connaît cette même vérité: | 29 Ask any one of them that go by the way, and you shall perceive that he knoweth these same things. |
| 30 que le méchant est réservé pour le jour de la ruine, et qu'il sera conduit au jour de la fureur. | 30 Because the wicked man is reserved to the day of destruction, and he shall be brought to the day of wrath. |
| 31 Qui le reprendra, en sa présence, de ses voies? et qui lui rendra ce qu'il a fait? | 31 Who shall reprove his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done? |
| 32 Il sera porté lui-même au tombeau, et il veillera parmi la foule des morts. | 32 He shall be brought to the graves, and shall watch in the heap of the dead. |
| 33 Sa présence a été agréable aux sables du Cocyte; il y entraînera tous les hommes après lui, et une foule innombrable l'a précédé. | 33 He hath been acceptable to the gravel of Cocytus, and he shall draw every man after him, and there are innumerable before him. |
| 34 Pourquoi donc me donnez-vous une vaine consolation, puisque j'ai montré que votre réponse est contraire à la vérité? | 34 How then do ye comfort me in vain, whereas your answer is shewn to be repugnant to truth ? |
