1 Meglio un buon nome che un buon profumo e il giorno della morte che quello della nascita.	1 A good name is better than good ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth.
2 Meglio andare in una casa dove si fa cordoglio, che in una casa dove si fa baldoria, perché è questa la fine di tutti gli uomini e il vivo così ci riflette.	2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting, For that is the end of every man, and the living should take it to heart.
3 Meglio la tristezza del riso, perché davanti a un volto triste il cuore si fa migliore.	3 Sorrow is better than laughter, because when the face is sad the heart grows wiser.
4 Il pensiero del sapiente è rivolto alla casa in cordoglio, il pensiero dello stolto alla casa in allegria.	4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
5 Meglio ascoltare il rimprovero del sapiente piuttosto che l'adulazione degli stolti,	5 It is better to hearken to the wise man's rebuke than to hearken to the song of fools;
6 perché come lo scoppiettio degli sterpi sotto la pentola, così è il riso dello stolto. Ma anche questo è vanità,	6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the fool's laughter.

9 Non essere facile ad irritarti nell'intimo, perché l'irritazione ha sede nel seno degli stolti.	9 Do not in spirit become quickly discontented, for discontent lodges in the bosom of a fool.
10 Non ti domandare com'è che il tempo passato è migliore di quello di oggi, perché questo problema non viene da saggezza.	10 Do not say: How is it that former times were better than these? For it is not in wisdom that you ask about this.
11 E' bene avere oltre alla sapienza un patrimonio: è un vantaggio per quelli che vedono il sole,	11 Wisdom and an inheritance are good, and an advantage to those that see the sun.
12 perché si vive all'ombra della sapienza, si vive all'ombra del danaro; ma vale di più il sapere, perché la sapienza fa vivere chi la possiede.	12 For the protection of wisdom is as the protection of money; and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of its owner.
13 Cerca di capire l'opera di Dio, perché nessuno può raddrizzare ciò che egli ha fatto curvo.	13 Consider the work of God. Who can make straight what he has made crooked?
14 Nei giorni felici sii lieto, nei giorni del dolore rifletti: gli uni come gli altri vengono per volere di Dio, perché l'uomo non possa sapere mai nulla del proprio futuro.	14 On a good day enjoy good things, and on an evil day consider: Both the one and the other God has made, so that man cannot find fault with him in anything.
15 Tutto ho veduto nei giorni miei vani. C'è il giusto che perisce nonostante la sua giustizia, e l'empio che vive a lungo nonostante la sua malvagità.	15 I have seen all manner of things in my vain days: a just man perishing in his justice, and a wicked one surviving in his wickedness.
16 Cerca perciò di non essere né troppo giusto né troppo saggio, se non vuoi perire.	16 "Be not just to excess, and be not overwise, lest you be ruined.
17 Ma non essere nemmeno troppo cattivo né troppo stolto, se non vuoi perire prima del tuo tempo.	17 Be not wicked to excess, and be not foolish. Why should you die before your time?"
18 E' bene che tu stia attaccato a una cosa, ma che tu non ti discosti nemmeno dall'altra. Quel che conta è che tu tema Dio, e riuscirai in entrambe le cose.	18 It is good to hold to this rule, and not to let that one go; but he who fears God will win through at all events.
19 La sapienza rappresenta per il saggio una forza maggiore di quella di dieci potenti in una città,	19 Wisdom is a better defense for the wise man than would be ten princes in the city,
20 per quanto sulla terra non ci sia nessun uomo che sia giusto, che faccia il bene senza peccare.	20 yet there is no man on earth so just as to do good and never sin.
21 Inoltre, non prestare attenzione a tutte le parole che si dicono, perché non ti capiti di sentire il tuo servo parlar male di te,	21 Do not give heed to every word that is spoken lest you hear your servant speaking ill of you,
22 ché la tua coscienza sa che anche tu, molte volte, hai parlato male degli altri.	22 for you know in your heart that you have many times spoken ill of others.
23 Poiché è con la sapienza che avevo fatte tutte queste considerazioni, decisi di diventare sapiente, ma la sapienza era lontana da me.	23 All these things I probed in wisdom. I said, "I will acquire wisdom"; but it was beyond me.
24 Lontano è il reale ed estremamente profondo. Nessuno ne verrà a capo.	24 What exists is far-reaching; it is deep, very deep: who can find it out?
25 Allora mi detti a riflettere nel mio cuore per cercare la sapienza e l'interpretazione delle cose, facendo esperienza del male, dell'insipienza, della stoltezza e della follia.	25 I turned my thoughts toward knowledge; I sought and pursued wisdom and reason, and I recognized that wickedness is foolish and folly is madness.
26 E questo ho trovato, che la donna è più amara della morte, perché essa è un laccio, il suo cuore è una rete e catene le sue braccia. Chi è gradito a Dio ne può scampare, ma il peccatore ci resta preso.	26 More bitter than death I find the woman who is a hunter's trap, whose heart is a snare and whose hands are prison bonds. He who is pleasing to God will escape her, but the sinner will be entrapped by her.
27 Ecco, questo è ciò che ho trovato, ha detto Qohèlet, nel cercare la ragione di tutto, cosa per cosa:	27 Behold, this have I found, says Qoheleth, adding one thing to another that I might discover the answer
28 aquello che cerco, non l'ho trovato.	28 which my soul still seeks and has not found: One man out of a thousand have I come upon, but a woman among them all I have not found.
29 Ma questo l'ho trovato: Dio ha fatto l'uomo semplice; è lui che va in cerca di tanti e tanti perché.	29 Behold, only this have I found out: God made mankind straight, but men have had recourse to many calculations.
