LXXNEW JERUSALEM
εις το τελος υπερ των αλλοιωθησομενων τοις υιοις κορε εις συνεσιν ωδη υπερ του αγαπητου1 [For the choirmaster Of the sons of Korah Poem] God, we have heard for ourselves, our ancestorshave told us, of the deeds you did in their days, in days of old,
εξηρευξατο η καρδια μου λογον αγαθον λεγω εγω τα εργα μου τω βασιλει η γλωσσα μου καλαμος γραμματεως οξυγραφου2 by your hand. To establish them in the land you drove out nations, to make room for them you harriedpeoples.
ωραιος καλλει παρα τους υιους των ανθρωπων εξεχυθη χαρις εν χειλεσιν σου δια τουτο ευλογησεν σε ο θεος εις τον αιωνα3 It was not their own sword that won the land, nor their own arms which made them victorious, but yourhand it was and your arm, and the light of your presence, for you loved them.
περιζωσαι την ρομφαιαν σου επι τον μηρον σου δυνατε τη ωραιοτητι σου και τω καλλει σου4 You are my king, my God, who decreed Jacob's victories;
και εντεινον και κατευοδου και βασιλευε ενεκεν αληθειας και πραυτητος και δικαιοσυνης και οδηγησει σε θαυμαστως η δεξια σου5 through you we conquered our opponents, in your name we trampled down those who rose up againstus.
τα βελη σου ηκονημενα δυνατε λαοι υποκατω σου πεσουνται εν καρδια των εχθρων του βασιλεως6 For my trust was not in my bow, my victory was not won by my sword;
ο θρονος σου ο θεος εις τον αιωνα του αιωνος ραβδος ευθυτητος η ραβδος της βασιλειας σου7 it was you who saved us from our opponents, you who put to shame those who hate us.
ηγαπησας δικαιοσυνην και εμισησας ανομιαν δια τουτο εχρισεν σε ο θεος ο θεος σου ελαιον αγαλλιασεως παρα τους μετοχους σου8 Our boast was always of God, we praised your name without ceasing.Pause
σμυρνα και στακτη και κασια απο των ιματιων σου απο βαρεων ελεφαντινων εξ ων ηυφραναν σε9 Yet now you have abandoned and humiliated us, you no longer take the field with our armies,
θυγατερες βασιλεων εν τη τιμη σου παρεστη η βασιλισσα εκ δεξιων σου εν ιματισμω διαχρυσω περιβεβλημενη πεποικιλμενη10 you leave us to fall back before the enemy, those who hate us plunder us at wil .
ακουσον θυγατερ και ιδε και κλινον το ους σου και επιλαθου του λαου σου και του οικου του πατρος σου11 You hand us over like sheep for slaughter, you scatter us among the nations,
οτι επεθυμησεν ο βασιλευς του καλλους σου οτι αυτος εστιν ο κυριος σου12 you sell your people for a trifle and make no profit on the sale.
και προσκυνησουσιν αυτω θυγατερες τυρου εν δωροις το προσωπον σου λιτανευσουσιν οι πλουσιοι του λαου13 You make us the butt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those around us,
πασα η δοξα αυτης θυγατρος βασιλεως εσωθεν εν κροσσωτοις χρυσοις περιβεβλημενη πεποικιλμενη14 you make us a by-word among nations, other peoples shake their heads over us.
απενεχθησονται τω βασιλει παρθενοι οπισω αυτης αι πλησιον αυτης απενεχθησονται σοι15 Al day long I brood on my disgrace, the shame written clear on my face,
απενεχθησονται εν ευφροσυνη και αγαλλιασει αχθησονται εις ναον βασιλεως16 from the sound of insult and abuse, from the sight of hatred and vengefulness.
αντι των πατερων σου εγενηθησαν σοι υιοι καταστησεις αυτους αρχοντας επι πασαν την γην17 Al this has befal en us though we had not forgotten you, nor been disloyal to your covenant,
μνησθησονται του ονοματος σου εν παση γενεα και γενεα δια τουτο λαοι εξομολογησονται σοι εις τον αιωνα και εις τον αιωνα του αιωνος18 our hearts never turning away, our feet never straying from your path.
Yet you have crushed us in the place where jackals live, and immersed us in shadow dark as death.
Had we forgotten the name of our God and stretched out our hands to a foreign god,
would not God have found this out, for he knows the secrets of the heart?
For your sake we are being massacred all day long, treated as sheep to be slaughtered.
Wake, Lord! Why are you asleep? Awake! Do not abandon us for good.
Why do you turn your face away, forgetting that we are poor and harrassed?
For we are bowed down to the dust, and lie prone on the ground.
Arise! Come to our help! Ransom us, as your faithful love demands.
